I feel like the best male bodybuilders have to have some sort of mental illness

Why would they want to put so much time and effort into getting THAT big? To want to be like Jay Cutler IMO there has to be something wrong with you. Thoughts?

    Well OP,

I would say people who are passionate about something spend their money, time and energy on it...like bodybuilders.

But...you are only 17 and you don't know of these things yet.

One of the greatest gifts in life is to figure out what you are passionate about.

Many people live their entire lives never figuring it out.

I agree. Too big. I think it comes from a dominance/inferiority issue.

Who really aspires to big muscly naked men in thongs comparing each others physiques. I think in the golden age of bodybuilding it used to be about art and who had the most proportional aesthetic body. Now they all look like, as Serge Nubret would say, pregnant women.

The amount of steroids, hgh, hormones and all these other drugs they need in order to maximize the catalyst their extreme training creates for muscle building to eat lbs and lbs of meat to sustain growth is undeniably freakish on every level.

Interesting point here. I think the thing about gaining size is that aesthetics are subjective and tape measures aren't.

However, moving on. OP, why the effervescent fck would you post this in the female section on a bodybuilding site? Mind=blown, neg temptation=high.

My issue is not that they are passionate about something. Im going to be an athlete in the big ten next year, and have been working out pretty much non stop sense freshman year. What I dont understand is what the reward is for looking like a freak.

    Again: "freak" to you. Subjective.

However they achieved their physiques, there needs to be a recognition that to do so takes an incredible amount of time, sacrifice, energy, patience, and hard work.

It may be a generalization but I think the vast majority of people would agree.

That still doesnt answer my question. Other than putting the time in effort into it, what do you get out of it. They obviously dont do it to stay healthy, they dont do it for the women, so why do they do it, other than possiblly low self esteem gone out of control?

You're right. Bodybuilding is not mainstream. It is a subculture. What exactly is your point?

Well, I am not a bodybuilder, but I would suspect many of them do it because they like to see how much they can shape/sculpt their bodies...test the limits of their strength and, aw what the heck, I'll just say it: maybe they just love to lift heavy things and put them back down?

Again, you are a mere babe. You have lots to learn about life, OP. People do things for lots of reasons other than mental illness.

I'm no physiologist but I think you will find most people who are successful at anything that takes years have an addictive personality. it takes devotion to ones own cause to gain where others fail. either make way for gains and strive or get out of the way and let someone by who is.

at any sport or competition at elite level there is a small amount of insanity, it is what separates the elite from the average .. if you plan on being at the elite level in your sport whatever it is, you better acquire that mentality
or you'll never be competitive ...

kid .. wake up!! enhancing drugs have been in sports for a long time like it or not it is part of the process, you'll never compete in the olympics without them

It's not an inferiority/dominance issue...most bodybuilders are down to Earth when you talk to them.

This is something that the younger generation wouldn't understand and it's called having a competitive spirit. Once you engage in competition and you get a taste of victory, you will inevitably spend the rest of your life chasing that feeling, one way or another. It's like a drug...

Like YeahBuddy's example...I spent close to 10 years of my life on basketball and that was my life through my teens. It was that constant chase for victory and betterment in this skill set that kept me going day to day. That did not work out too well, I had some major injuries, I broke my Achilles, I had problems with my knees and shins...It was very painful to let go of this. But then I discovered weight training and I just switched over to that.

As for the steroids/drugs they use...this is just a sacrifice that they make to attain their goal and to reach this feeling of victory. Many people work 12-16 hours a day to climb the corporate ladder and this stress that they put themselves through is no less dangerous to their health than the drug path that some bodybuilders take. Soldiers volunteer themselves to be sent into life threatening situations because they feel that they are serving a greater purpose and many enjoy the competitive nature of that trade as well.

Sometimes you have to make sacrifices for these goals but ultimately it's centered around this chase of that high...Being declared the greatest bodybuilder in the world. You would not understand that and that's okay, the vast majority of youth are afraid of competition, difficulty and pain...and they give up at the first obstacle.

Exactly! Everyone is a special snowflake

...and b/c a vast majority of young people are raised with that mentality, they have no chutzpah when things get difficult or they are challenged. They simply give up and complain about how "unfair" life is...or how other people must be "crazy" (hint, hint, OP)

Seems like just an interest/something to do. Nothing wrong with it, OP. If someone wants to make their body swole, then can also retract it back to a smaller size later.

I guess dedication and hard work ethic along with constant self discipline is a mental illness now days. Some people find being that big appealing like I do, others don't. Just like anything, it's a matter of opinion.
