I always hear that if you can't finish a squat, drop the weight. But your fingers are gripped around from behind -- how do you properly let go of the weight without getting the bar to clear the fingers? Or is the idea to support the bar on your back and then let go + quickly stand up so the weight rolls off?

If you're in a rack, just drop back down, set the weight on the rack, then crawl out. I had to do this the other day. If you're using bumper plates with no rack, then let go of the bar and step out. Not that hard. The bar should be on your back, not on your hands. Your hands being wrapped around the bar is kind of a non-factor when ditching.
