I work for the phone company. The Obama phone program has been around for a long time. It originally gave poor people in rural areas a basic landline for free so they could keep in contact and dial 911 if needed. Obama expanded it to cell phones and the program has become crazy. It's filled with fraud. People get 30, 40 or 50 phones and sell them on the street. All paid for by you, the taxpayer.
The lady who started it all.

I was wondering what the phone this was all about, thanks for explaining it.
I posted this in another thread, and figured why should anyone in the crew miss out on it. I'll take the one in blue...

Hey all. I wanted to give you an update on my knee. As long time posters here will remember, I royally screwed up my left knee on February 25th. For the new guys in the thread, here's a short recap.
I was hiking. Stepped off a rock and my knee went to the left and twisted. The result? Dislocated kneecap, torn patellar tendon, torn ACL, torn ligament in the back of my knee with a really long name I can't remember, non-displaced fracture of the tibia. I had surgery on March 23rd and did the rehab. I got my custom made carbon fiber composite knee brace in July ($2800). Thank you United Healthcare.
The doctor repaired the patellar tendon but I still have the torn ACL and the other ligament. He told me it would take a full year to rehab the patellar tendon and I would not be hiking until March or April of 2013.
Well Doc, screw you. Here are 2 pictures from todays hike. I was in South Mountain Preserve. I hiked out of Box Canyon at the main parking area to Los Lomitas Loop. Then, I took Kiwanis Trail to Telegraph Pass. Five miles roundtrip and about 700 feet elevation change.
I'll hike the trail I got injured on next weekend. Mormon Trail and Loop.
I love proving medical professionals wrong. You can do anything you put your mind to. I have 130º range of motion in my repaired knee, the same as the good knee. The brace is amazing and I feel completely stable in it. It only weighs 12 ounces.
This pic is looking north from about halfway up Kiwanis Trail
This pic is from the top of Kiwanis Trail at Telegraph pass looking over the Gila River Indian Reservation.

Yea, it used to be the most basic emergency phone with no long distance in rural areas only, since cities had pay phones that dial 911 for free. now its a free cell phone with a choice of plans for pretty much anyone who asks. The guy I worked with Friday said he was only supposed to get 150 minutes a month but they keep giving him 650 anytime and free texting he's fairly honest so he worries they will charge him later but its been months and nothing changes.

Basically Americans are very kind and giving people. No one has a problem with a poor single mom living alone to have a life-line to emergency help. But the abuse is so bad, its like an entitlement.
I can only afford a pay-as-you go phone, hahah. $50 pre-paid, one-year until expiry, and my air-time fee is 25cent min. 100% serious. I never talk more than one minute.
I would love to have 150min/mon, or 650min/mon anytime plan, OMG. Such a rip-off welfare state people take advantage soo bad...[]---[] Equipment Crew #6 []---[]

Well played, EP. Well played. Deft.
You need a good rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

Below are some photos that I took on Friday's hike. The boulder strewn hill shown in the photo is a portion of the main slide mass from the Marcus Landslide. Not just the boulders, but the hill too. It extends for quite a distance from the side of the mountain from whence it broke loose, 500,000 years ago.
I was disappointed to see that a bunch of informational signs have been placed on the trail. Though educational, they detract from the beauty of the place, IMO. Still, it's better than some of the alternatives. Better to have well groomed trails there than to lose access to the area altogether...
Here's an example of one of the signs that's been placed on the trail:
Here's what the sign says...
I had posted photos of that rock here in the past. I'm happy I got a few photos of it before the sign went in.Last edited by KBKB; 11-10-2012 at 11:50 PM.

KBKB. I don't know that I have a huge problem with those signs as long as they are few and far between. The only signs in the South Mountain preserve are the little yellow ones that say "Don't be a trailblazer" and to stay on trail. I'm not sure if they even work. People are idiots. I picked up a water bottle someone just tossed on the trail yesterday. Apparently it was too heavy for them to carry to the trailhead and toss in the trash can.

Yankee - Good to hear that things are healing up. Other health issue(s) doing ok? I like the view of the second pic which puts the clouds in perspective, behind the terrain. A "feel the moment", for people who have hiked mountains/forests/etc.
KB - Just to the left-top of the mushroom formation, it looks like there is something at the top of the hill stick up. Do you know what that is, or is it merely my aging eyes?

Check out these shoes. My all time favorites for lifting. Puma Speed Cat 2.0 Mid. After a week or so they completely conform to your feet. It protects the feet and feels like you are standing directly on the ground. The picture I posted are some special edition ones, but normal ones can be found for $50-60. Nice job on banging Holly!
Found some white ones here for $39.99. I have had black, white and I am about to order another pair of black. I still wear the black ones that I have had for 3 years now.

I think it's the rock / boulder at the top of the ridge in the center of the photo below. It's an interesting looking rock. I'd like to get a close-up of it sometime, but that portion of the mountain isn't terribly accessible.
Here are two other photos that I took yesterday...
Below is a photo of a climber on Hanging Gardens (5.5) on Gardener's Wall. It's a two pitch route. The climber is about seven feet below the belay station mid way up the wall. As I recall, there's a three or four inch ledge that you can stand on while belaying the next person up. The anchor looks to be a pair of chains, connected at the bottom, forming a "V". In the old days, we used nylon webbing there, but chains last longer.
Here's another photo of Tom's Thumb. (I've posted other photos of Tom's Thumb in the past.) My wife is standing on a lower boulder at the far right in this photo. There are a lot of one pitch climbing routes on Tom's Thumb. I've done two of the easier ones on it when I was younger.
