I used to squat with my smith machine, but it hurts my back so I stopped. To me it puts you in an awkward position and is an injury waiting to happen. I will only squat with free weights from now on. Just my .02

After years of switching between using a Rack and a Smith Machine, I find little to no difference in the two. Just do as DM says above and adjust your foot positioning and you'll do very well and be safe too. I like setting the chocks on the third pin of the SM and then taking my squat down to them. That assures me that I am below parallel and all I worry about is my back and my leg drive coming out of the hole.

i dont see what your age would have to do with using the smith machine for squats. i'm a 33yr old natural bodybuilder and i use this machine at times for squats. i think it's a great machine that lets you focus completely on the the form and push some really good amount of weight without having to worry about the balancing of the bar. now should you only stick to smith squats? not at all, use free weights because it uses your entire body and you'll actually grow a lot faster by doing free weight movements. plus it really helps develop your core strength.
