What is the difference in getting a BSN or an AS degree in nursing ?
I dont know too much but hopefully this article can help you out with your question.

First of all, let’s establish what each one stands for. A BSN is a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, while an ADN is an Associates Degree in Nursing. Both degrees lead to getting your RN but there are some differences between the two.

The main difference is the length of time and the amount of credits required to complete the program. An ADN typically takes 2 years to complete while a BSN will take 4 years to complete (including the time spent taking the prerequisites to enter the program.) There are also accelerated BSN programs (18-21 months) for students who have already obtained a previous Bachelor’s degree.

Both programs would include the following in their core curriculum: Adult health, Maternal and newborn nursing, and pediatrics. Psychiatric nursing, community health nursing, and gerontological nursing are sometimes included as well. A BSN program would typically offer more courses in nursing theory, including nursing research, and nursing informatics, which is a field of study that examines how nurses use technology.

Generally speaking, the starting rate is the same for an ADN or a BSN prepared nurse, but because many advanced positions require a BSN, the BSN prepared nurse does have the potential to earn more money. In 2006 the state of California conducted a survey of registered nurses. This survey showed that BSN prepared nurses have a mean income of $75,017 while ADN prepared nurses had a mean income of $70,804.

Advantages to taking an ADN program:

    It is usually less expensive
It is less time consuming – You will become a nurse quicker

    Advantages to taking the BSN:

You will have more opportunities to advance to higher positions in nursing (for example as a nurse manager.)
You will be prepared to enter a advanced degree program (for example, nurse practitioner, nurse midwife, or nurse anesthetist.)

How common is one over the other?

In the state of California in 2006, 46.6% of RN licenses were obtained through ADN programs, while 37.7% of RN licenses were obained through a BSN program. The rest of the RN licenses were obtained through hospital based diploma programs. This is a type of nursing program which is administered by a hospital. When completing a diploma program, one is eligible to sit for the NCLEX (the exam to become an RN), however, no degree is obtained.

Pay is generally the same, yes. If you plan on going to graduate school, you want to get your bachelors. If you don't mind being a staff nurse for the rest of your life, an associates will be fine. Academic hospitals are slowly moving away from associate nurses. A hospital staffed with bachelor degrees looks better than a hospital with associates. It's a way to increase the standards of the profession.

Your mom should know more than a new grad, regardless. Skills come with experience.

From my experience if you have strong grades (high GPA, A's in AnP1-2 and Bio/MicroBio basically the sciences), and you do well on the entrance exam for the RN program, you shouldnt have a hard time getting in. Girl I know had straight A's and did well on the entrance exam and got in her first attempt. Me..lets just say it took some time and with some luck lol.

In. 3rd semester of ADN program.

And advice on studying, getting ahead of the curve, preparing for job hunt is greatly appreciated. I'm in NYC and all i hear are horror stories. Matter of fact, the guy who taught my BLS course before i even started the program was a RN new grad who couldnt get a job, talk about a great way to start nursing.

Also, just being a dick. The picture you have of the staff with the serpents is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caduceus , most often "incorrectly" confused with http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rod_of_Asclepius the "correct" staff of the god of healing and medicine

Correct w/ the rod of asclepius. Bigger cities tend to be tough for new graduates. More schools in the area = more competition. You can't be afraid to move for a decent job. You sacrifice two years to pay your do's and then move on to what you want. If you are planning to stay in the city, apply for those good jobs, but don't be hard on yourself if you settle for less before moving up.

I've seen you mention being a SRNA. Couple questions for you, if you could answer.

    1. I usually read about debates between med school vs CRNA, how did you figure out your choice? Time investment wise it doesn't seem much of a difference if you count residency as working. 4 years med school vs 1-2 years ICU experience, 2-3 years CRNA school.

    2. How do you feel about the future of CRNAs. The possibility of oversupply as schools crank out more and more. Some may even compare it to pharmacists, and how their "golden time" is over, salaries are decreasing, and its becoming harder to find jobs.

    3. What are your plans after becoming a CRNA? Are there any more room for advancements? Would you ever consider moving into healthcare administration and climbing up that ladder?

    4. If you could go back, would you do nursing all over again?

    5. What do you know now, that you wish you knew or did back in nursing school that would help you immensely?

    5. What do you know now, that you wish you knew or did back in nursing school that would help you immensely?
    1) Med school is considerably more difficult, with hellish schedules and lots of stress. Nursing fits my relaxed lifestyle better. Friend of the family is a doctor. I Do not envy his life or schedule despite how much money he makes. CRNA's work 40 hours a week for great pay. Sold.

    2) I agree, there are too many schools out there pumping out CRNA's. It saturates the market, so things like sign on bonuses become a thing of the past. Ok, fine. In the near future, CRNA programs will no longer be a masters degree. All new CRNA's must be Doctors of Nursing Practice. (DNP) I am in one of those programs. It's more school (3 years instead of around 2.25 years for masters), but I will be set for life. If schools continue to want to exist, they must make the transition to doctorate level. Not many will pull this off, therefore, I predict there will be a massive drop in the amount of schools. In time, it'll decrease the amount of new CRNA's being produced each year. And it makes the standards of the profession that much greater. In terms of salary. Anesthesiologists have seen their 400k/year salaries go down the drain. However, think about what a CRNA does compared to other nurses and how much they get paid. Staff nurses can make 80-100k. NO WAY IN HELL are staff nurses going to make more than CRNA's. The industry won't allow it. A CRNA is worth a crap load more than a regular nurse. Therefore, CRNA salaries will stay fairly stable.

3)This will be my last stop. I do not believe there is a post doctoral program for crnas except for research. I will have the option to be part of studies, which is nice. I don't know what i'll do 10-15 years down the road. Maybe I'll be a team leader? Maybe do some anesthesia product sales on the side for a company. NO CLUE.

    4) I'm not done yet, but when I am done, I believe i will have no regrets. The job is so rewarding both financially and personally. I enjoyed my time in the ICU as well. I would do it all over again. Looking at the job markets elsewhere, nursing is by far the best. Yeah you clean crap and shove foleys in dudes, but you have to block that out, be professional and realize it's a crappy part you have to deal with to advance. To be honest, bodily fluids don't even bother me.

    5) For nursing school, I would have checked my ego at the door earlier. Men do not get treated well by undergrad professors. Best advice is to stay low and pass.

As a RN I would suggest anyone thinking about making this their profession to strongly reconsider. Atleast work at a CNA initially before dedicating so much time into a job you may not enjoy. I had never work anywhere near a hospital before becoming a LVN (GVN in some states) and before finishing up as a RN i knew it wasnt for me. I went ahead and finished since I had dedicated so much time and money into it but I can tell you that I will not be doing this my whole life.

YES. Working as 'customer service' making $25-$29/hr and let me tell you...all its doing is motivating me to work even harder in the RN Program. Cant stand kissing ass anymore..I'd rather help ppl than kiss their ass.

Sorry to hear. I agree the profession is not for everyone. People shouldnt get into it for the money..its definitely a profession you would want to enjoy.

I'm only familiar with my ADN program so by first semester I'm taking it to mean you will be starting clinicals right away. This is for the soon to be nursing students:

Studying - Stay motivated. Idc if you have all the time in the world to slack off, don't. After class just go home and review for an hour. Nursing material isn't hard, but its no English class. There is no room for procrastination and all-nighters where you can just write a paper hours before class. The material you learn, you will either need to know for the rest of your career, or it will still help you immensely, its not just something to pass an exam. Keep this in mind! Not much else to say for this. If you are not dimwit, you can do this. No offense to the ladies, but take a look at your female counterparts, if they can put the effort in so can you; Show them how the future of nursing will benefit from more male nurses.

Confidence- You are entering a world full with the negative stigma of male nurses and nurses in general, and even if you don't want to admit it, it can be nerve wrecking at first. It's true, you don't know anything, and probably from the first moment you step foot on the hospital floor, you will still feel the same way. Despite this, never walk with your head down. Carry yourself with confidence, but not cockiness. Be a sponge and soak up everything you can. Ask questions. Yes there are dumb questions, so do your reading before hand so you don't ask them. If you are a shy person, boy, you will get an awakening. Like my professor said, a shy nurse is not a good nurse. You need to have the balls to talk to anyone.

Speak to the nurse you are assigned to at the hospital. Since it's your first semester you will find yourself doing 1 hour of actual work, and 5 hours of pretending to do work/look for something to keep busy/ finding your classmates to talk/. You will not be given any serious patients for your first clinicals; If you have nothing to do, gtfo of that patients room and track down your primary nurse and ask to tag along with her, just make sure you go back to check on your patient.

Not much more advice to give, anything else you learn as you go.

As a man, it will be like sitting on the sidelines watching a drama. The girls will form groups and some will hate others. There will be gossip and you will hear things from both sides, as you stay neutral.

Already have that mindset...I think of the girls as distractions and thats the last thing I need. I plan on just minding my own business and getting my work done.

Alright, not sure if this is what this thread is for, but I've gotta question and will rep for helpful advice.

Saturday afternoon I spent all day drinking and swimming in a cold pool. Drank from about 2pm-3am. Went swimming around 10pm and 1am.

Since Sunday I've been battling crazy sinus pressure, runny nose, cough, coughing up greenish/brownish mucus, body aches, had a fever a couple days ago but it's no longer here. Checked my temp today it was 97.7.

I've been taking antihistimine and tylenol severe cold and flu. It's not helping too much. I know you'll say go see a doctor, but I'm kinda worried what it is. What do you guys think? Not sure if I just killed my immune system drinking and got a cold or if i've got a sinus infection or the dreaded west nile. Kinda worried......

thanks for the help medical brahs.
