After doing a few of the review questions, I realize I don't know ****, but I'm taking it slow and trying to understand each question before moving on.
This will definitely help me out though - thanks a lot brahs.

Would I be able to just "drop out" of my CSU after this semester and go to a community college to do an ADN program? Or does everything have a waitlist nowadays.
adn is rn and they get paid the same as bsn...maybe $1k/yr differential
u can complete the pre-reqs and apply for the adn program at your cc. If you get accepted, then go. I'm not sure where u live, but a lot of adn programs have 2-3 year wait lists. My program didn't have a waitlist, so the best way to get in is to have a near perfect pre-req gpa. I took/re-took some courses and got 3.9.

from what i saw during clinicals, they are on their feet 50% of the time. And the other 50% is in front of the computer charting.

i've had all positive responses when i told girls im gonna be an RN. They thought it was "cute" and i went on a few dates because of it. I think my oneitis was the only one that laughed when i said i was thinking about nursing school when i was in my previous career, but she didnt care.

It really depends. When I did my senior preceptorship in the OR as a circulating nurse, I probably spent like 80% of my time standing and running around and 20% of my time in front of a computer documenting.

Currently I'm doing forensic psych in a state hospital and on my unit it's more like 60% of the time in front of the computer documenting and 30% of the time managing unit crises. The patient's come to our unit from jail because they were not competent to stand trial. Their crimes range from small time misdemeanor type stuff to big time felonies, murder and such. Our goal is to get them stabilized and back to jail so that they can stand trial. So that 60% of of the time is spent interviewing the patients, documenting their progress and meeting with the interdisciplinary team to create and implement goals to get the client competent.

My unit right now is pretty good and our clients behavior isn't too bad. But maybe 30% of the time is spent "assisting" client into seclusion or restraints, "Helping" the client take his medication or get a bath, and stopping client-client assaults/fights and such (all with the help of our tech's and security). Some other units in my hospital are much, much worse and like it's more like 50% of the time documenting and 50% of the time handling crises (including "assisting" client to the wall with a riot shield - usually done when patient has a weapon, or a hostage). We can have staff injury's and have had staff death's before so sometimes it can be really scary.

Some of our time spent on our feet is good though- about 10% is Professional assault-crisis training, playing games with patients, doing physical exams and making rounds.

Every area of nursing is different and the ratio's of sitting to standing vary.

The HESI book comes with an online companion site that gives you HESI practice questions.

Saunders, at least in my opinion - was my nursing school bible in terms of content.

I did really well on the HESI exams with these two books.

I used the one above and another. Nclex shut off at 90 questions and took 2 days to learn I passed.

I have to have my nursing application turned in before October. I plan to study the rest of this month and take the HESI in September. I'm thinking about buying both these books used (I'm broke). How long did you have to study? I'm pretty smart (definitely not the smartest, but I'm not the dumbest either).

What's up guys! Long time lurker here. I am currently in the process of finishing my prereqs before I apply to some California BSN programs. I only need physiology and psychology class which I'll be taking next semester. I have a question though, on the nursing shortage, or the "lack" of nursing shortage. I've wanted to become a nurse since junior year of high school, and have spent 2 years already at CC taking my prereqs (couldn't get into classes my first year). I want to become a nurse because I love the health care environment, the medical field, and I love the idea of helping people and impacting somebody's life on a daily basis.

However, lately I've been researching. Another big factor in my affinity to become a nurse was always the idea of there being jobs, as I was always told that RNs were always in demand. After researching for the past couple of days, I'm kind of scared of the job outlook. I've read stories of RNs being fired, recent grads who for a year plus haven't been able to find a job, and that hopsitals are not hiring new grads? I still want to become an RN but this is has really scared me off. I don't think I can go through another 2-3 yrs of school to get my BSN, be 20-30k in debt, and come out of school without having any means to support myself. That's just too much time and too much money. I am just wondering if any new grads, or current RNs could shed some light on this situation?

if you google "no nursing shortage" there are plenty of stories of recent grads who cannot find jobs, and people debunking the idea of a nursing shortage. However, I read some of this thread and it seems like most people are doing just fine? Sorry for the long post, I just want some more information before I decide whether or not I truly want to go down this path, big decision for me (although I have no idea what else I would do in place of nursing).

I'm from a smaller city, and there are always job openings for new grads in the local hospitals.
The only complaint around here has been that new grads may not get into the exact position they were hoping for right away.
From what I understand, if you're from a big city and aren't scared to move around, you won't have a problem finding a job either.
A lot of the guys in here are more knowledgeable about that than me as I'm also just starting out in nursing school, so wait and see what they say brah.
    Good luck.

How often do you have to "bathe " patients, would you say that's probably the biggest con of the job of being a RN ?

I'm only a S-RN but from what I observed both on the long term care and at the hospital, CNAs were the ones that were doing them. Not to say that RNs don't do them but its usually delegated down to CNAs from what I saw. Don't mistake CNAs for nurses, seems like the public does that a lot. I don't blame them though.

The biggest con for me..or maybe its just something I'm afraid to experience is a patient dying on me during my shift. Knowing they're going to die is hard sometimes.

Edit: The biggest con for nurses is probably facing ethical issues lol.

Edit edit: Biggest con for doctors.. high possibility of being sued?

any brahs in here in psychiatric nursing? i want to learn a bit more about psych nurses, specifically for adolescence/children. my cousin deals with the elderly in the psychiatric department of his hospital, and he told me that most of his work has to do with constraint, haha.

Been an ED nurse for about 2.5 months now after a year of medsurg. Just got off orientation. Holy hell, it's a whole new world, but I'm really enjoying it. Medsurg became way too routine for me. Stressful, but great and I'm learning a ton.

Also, going through clinicals I loved psych and thought I definitely wanted to be a psych nurse. Get some real world experience though where you aren't caring for them 1 on 1 and hell no lol. Mad props to those that do though.

I would assume ED has a lot more action going on compared to medsurg lol.

Speaking of psych..check this out. Didnt know about this "emerging technique." Pretty interesting:

    Talking

Hey everyone, was referred to this thread by Chris.

Year 1 pharmacy resident checking in. I'm hoping to do a second year in either emergency medicine or critical care. Pharmacists in these areas are more common in academic centers than in smaller hospitals but hopefully I can make a difference someday.

Right now I'm reading about vasopressors for the NAPLEX (pharmacy boards) next week
On 5/1/2011 I started my quest for 10k rep.

Think I might try to get into the Accelerated BSN program for next fall. Was wanting to do DO school but having a change of heart and not wanting to put up with the time/stress. Not 100% sure yet.
