They can be and usually are. Look at the list of the 2012 black list scripts. All top notch stuff and I happen to have went to college with a couple of the writers on that list.

When it comes to movies getting made, its all about the money. Its a business. Money in has to be greater than money out. Movies like Big Momma's house dont necessarily appeal to me, so the company i work for wont make them, but somebody will because there is a big enough audience that will pay to see it.

I'm just a guy who watches movies so I don't actually know what I'm talking about like you do.

But literally 90% of movies seem to be remakes/comic book adaptions/bestselling book adaptions. Maybe your company does niche stuff and that's why it considers original scripts?

You have to have an agent..unless you know somebody. An intern or assistant will usually read it before any executives will and depending on the feedback they give...the exec may or may not read it.

If you're script is good and know somebody, that can also help you get an agent. Remember though, agents make money off of you...so they want good writers with good scripts, but they don't accept submissions. It's a real catch 22. If word gets out that your script is at a prod. company, an agent is bound to hear about it and give you a call after they read it.

Even if it can't be made, if the script is solid you can still land an agent based on writing ability. Yes, format is important, yes structure/character dev/story arc/etc is all important. Look at the script Chewie for an example of a movie that will never be made, but demonstrated good enough writing to land those guys an agent.

The studios wont directly. The production company usually will...most times the studio just funds the project unless you have a really close in-house thing like pixar/dreamworks.

But yet. Actually today I made a call to a publishing house to find out who represents an author that we want to work with. Her book will be coming out in 2013.

I've spoken with unpublished authors as well and read their material to see if it had any merit. If it does, I'll try to get an option on it and take it to a publisher to try to cut a deal for them...which helps my negotiations.

Its actually telling the story of how the first vampire came to be and its kind of a Shakespearean tragedy.

Kind of like Gladiator meets Dracula meets Romeo and Juliet kind of deal.

Vampires are kind of out right now and I haven't seen any scripts dealing with it lately. There's been a lot of really good action/suspense stories going around as well as some good fantasy/sci-fi chit.

Good comedies are hard to come by though. I've only read a couple so far and one of them was a tv pilot.

    Very interesting.

Edit: Something I've always wanted to know: where does the budget actually go in those $150 million movies? Adam Sandler's latest movie cost $90 million. I just cannot understand how you could spend that much money on movie?

Actually if you want to try to work something out I can probably get my hands on the Network Need's List within the next few days. it will list pretty much what every network is looking for (albeit the descriptions kind of suck).

I have friends that I work with in doing it, but perhaps I'll extend that invitation to the misc to see if we can't get something really good going. Of course we'll do the whole negotiation/contract thing to make sure the creator of the idea gets paid if it's sold...but I'll think about it.
