925lbs of Iron Grip Urethane Plates, compliments of OSUdimond! Also picked up a hammer strength flat bench and weight tree. Already ordered the new pad for the bench, want everything looking good for when I get my new gym setup. Question though, has anyone dealt with cleaning Urethane and what is the best method? Got these home and they have a funny smell, almost a mixture of rotten trash or eggs. Its pretty obvious but not room clearing, you can tell the minute you walk downstairs something is just off.

I've never cleaned them, but those look like they're in real good condition.

They really are, a few scuffs here and there but no major damage. Awesome looking plates, just a little smelly. Maybe vinegar and water, Iron Grips care says warm water but doesn't go any further than that.

I know!!! I just happened to see it as we were getting the plate tree down off a rack. Solid as hell, around tall 16" from the ground, and the pad is 11" wide. Now I feel better about selling the Cybex 5435, I have the F320 for incline/decline work and the Hammer Strength for flat bench.

Nice score. I would start with the warm water on 4-6 plates and see how that works. Hopefully, some light washing and fresh air will do it.

FWIW, Ivanko recommends SP80 for their bumpers and I use it every 6-months or so on mine with good results. But, different manufacturer, different material...

I bought the SP80 to clean and condition (blue and black) my rubber coated ivankos and don't think it does as good a job as the mcguires rubber cleaner/conditioner I used. The service from SP80 is great. For cleaning the rubber, nothing matched a magic eraser. For the smell, there were a lot of recs, I used some simple green. I don't know how the urethane would do with this products.

How do you like the split sleeve bar?
I might bug you about your opinion after you use it a fair bit.

so far the knurling feels nice and easy. not aggressive but real tacky. i'm planning on using this bar for my pulling movements and keep my cap-ob86b for inside the rack.

i'm going to try and clean it off next week and oil the sleeves a bit to see how nice i can get them to spin.

i once removed and replaced a small snap ring without snap ring pliers. i used a small screwdriver and i think a nail (for wood).

i haven't used snap ring pliers but i'm guessing they'd work better than a screwdriver and a nail

    it was an external ring

    New Shoes

Wanted black, but these were a bit less and thought I would mix it up from my usual black sneakers. Anyway, was tired from traveling, but these were waiting at home so I had to give them a go on pull day (includes DLs). My feet felt very stable and they were pretty comfortable. They will stay in my gym. Something else is coming tomorrow, would have come in handy today.

It's really sad, isn't it? The n00bs have no appreciation for the hard-learned lessons of six months ago, let alone six years ago. . . .
You need a good rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

Got these home and they have a funny smell, almost a mixture of rotten trash or eggs. Its pretty obvious but not room clearing, you can tell the minute you walk downstairs something is just off.

Apologies on the smell. The warehouse next to me does woodworking so my place constantly smells like paint or stain or other strong smells. I wasn't aware of the smell but I went back this morning and got my nose up on them and can smell what you're talking about. Feel free to bill me for your cleaning supplies and time. Nice doing business with you.

No worries at all man, your warehouse is so massive there would have been no way for you to detect the smell without sticking your nose to them. Just looking for a safe way to clean them without damaging the urethane, the equipment bro's gave me a couple hints in the other thread so I may give them a try. If all else fails I'll plug in a Glade and the smell will probably go away with time. Take care, pleasure meeting you!

I don't think there is any way to clean them because it's not that there is something on the surface of the urethane that smells. It's the actual urethane material that smells. If you slice a layer of it off, there is more urethane under it and that smells. Kinda like a car tire keeps smelling -it's the rubber that stinks. I think it just takes time for all those chemicals to seep out.

urban, so funny you commented on the funky smell those urethanes have. i have had several different urethane dumbbells and plates made by iron grip that had a strong odor. it almost smells like cat piss or dirty stagnant water. i tried just about everything to get the smell off of them and it just would not go away. in the end, i called iron grip and they told me to use a product from home depot called "zep". that did squat so i eventually sold the stinky urethane dumbbells and plates. i really like iron grip products, but something is definitely up with some of their urethane items.

this is the dumbbell set i had that i dumped cheaply because of the smell.

Picked up two of these the other day, thru WOD weights, factory seconds. They were at a crossfit 10min from me. They are in good shape, this one better than the other. At 1.40 per pound, a good deal for me, and the two guys I communicated with were very responsive. You can find their ad on CL, or search the web.

I don't know if you have a preference one way or the other, but Lynx Barbell over in the Chamblee area sells bumpers branded with their logo for about that same price per pound, all the time. They also carry their own bars, fractional plates, rings, bands, etc.

Wow nice score on the ship wheels. You keeping them or selling them to fund more equipment?

I think I have the same bar too, in about the same condition. Gotta get around to doing a refurb soon.

I considered driving over there, but there is not really a good time for me to do so. I would have saved shipping, but not aggravation of driving around Atlanta.

Yeah, weekday traffic in that area sucks ass and I don't think they're open at all on Saturday.

thanks man, i'm going to be hanging onto them for sure. if i need to get rid of them down the line i'll hit up some equipment forum regulars who've offered to do a swap for things i need; i'm not looking to flip them for money.

as far as the bar, it's been fun to play with in terms of cleaning it off and taking it apart; i just wish i had half a day uninterrupted so i could do it all at once. hauling it outside and setting up my stuff takes up most of my time when i do get a chance to work on it...
