Hey fam...my grandma passed away this morning . I have now lost both my grandma's. Between the cooking and the life lessons, they can never be replaced.
Time to dedicate some workouts, and the rest of my senior year of college to her. She always wanted me to graduate. R.I.P.

Started reading this article and it slowly turned into hating on westside, max effort, bands, chains and whatnot. Is that the new, cool thing to do?1372 @ 205

Thanks for the offer, but I will pass on banana. I can't imagine liking it at all.
I was going to ask for a link to the post, so thanks for copying & pasting it.

Yea I haven't read it all yet cuz its long.
I guess its not straight up bashing cuz that ain't gonna happen. It's more like subtly saying things.
"The next best discovery I had was to give up my Westside bias toward the idea of max effort training."
I kind of read that as people who do Westside are biased towards Westside and all its principles. Oh your program doesn't have a max effort day, it must suck!
"First along this line is the conjugation of exercises. At first, I switched from sumo to conventional deadlifts every four weeks and box squats to free squats. I subbed in things like the floor press and the cage static press for the bench press. Although I liked the variety, my progress was very slow. However, as soon as I switched to sticking with the basics—free squats, conventional deadlifts, and bench presses—my progress skyrocketed."
At this point I had to look at the authors name again cuz it sounded alot like what Brandon Lilly is talking about. We need to build up our basic barbell strength like the Russians or "enter other country here" do it.
"Finally, the whole “bands and chains thing” was as tough as Copenhagen to quit. "
Again, sounds like a lot of what Brandon Lilly has been saying lately. I know bands + chains doesn't = Westside but accommodating resistance is a principle of Westside.
Still reading through between doing other things at home right now so I haven't gotten through everything yet.
EDIT
"Earlier in this article, I mentioned the idea of lifts that were “keepers.” This paragraph will be devoted to the idea of “throwbacks” or lifts that I feel don’t give me much benefit personally. Number one on this list for me has to be partial range movements. Board presses, rack lockouts, rack pulls, and other movements like these all have their place in training, just not in my training. I only end up getting injured."
Once again, not directly attacking Westside since any sensible person would be too stupid to do that. But he is kinda saying alot of things that Westsiders do didn't work for him. And I know he is saying it only didn't work for him, same with Brandon Lilly. But I mean if everyone starts saying that "Westside didn't work for them" then that is the same thing as saying Westside doesn't work.
I know its just 2 people but that's why I said is this the new, cool thing to do. Like people are going to read that article and hear what Brandon Lilly says and start coming out of the wood works and be like "yea Westside didn't work for me either!"Last edited by arian11; 12-07-2012 at 11:05 AM.

Snow so far: none.
If you have focused on hypertrophy for a month, you've gained more muscle, maybe work capacity, etc and those are things that are hard to lose however you decide to train your next block. Speed is something that personally I think you can build upon and should never lose if you are aiming for speed on all sets, heavy or light. I think there are some things in periodization that you want to transition a little more smoothly, i.e. overall induced stress and individually volume or intensity.
Too bad man, I honestly can't say I feel how you mean, my grandparents are horrible so be thankful. When they all pass I'll be sad for my parents, nothing more.
Congrats, what did your advisor dude say when you called him a *******?Best Meet Lifts:

Can you explain what makes your grandparents horrible? My dads mother (which I don't consider one of my grandma's) is a terrible person and I haven't seen her in around 5-6 years. But my Moms mother was a awesome grandma and I consider my best friends grandparents to be my grandparents as well.

Lol, I know that feel.

Lol, I've never done Westside before so I don't care if they bash it. It's just seemed funny/coincidental that it's coming out at the same time. Though there have been plenty of coaches advocating "if you wanna get stronger at the squat then squat" for decades. So whatevs.1372 @ 205

Thanks guys. My grandparents played huge roles in my life. They were practically my second set of parents. I will make sure when I am a grandfather, that I am the exact same way. I could talk to them about anything, stuff I wouldn't even tell my parents. And they wouldn't say a word.
But thank God I still have my grand fathers.
In other news, one more week and I am a college graduate and a real man.

That article wasn't hating on Westside, it was loving on 5/3/1. That's a common problem amongst the powerlifting community. Brandon Lilly said he enjoyed raw lifting, specifically goes out of his way to say he's not saying raw lifting is better, etc. and gear zealots say he's "hating on gear" while raw zealots say "see tole you raw is better." Lilly is accountable for mistakes of youth and talks about how crushed he was to have to leave Westside and people say "that guy's a dick who hates Westside." How ****ing complicated people make something as easy as getting better at picking **** up and putting it down never ceases to amaze. Not everything is an extreme, if somebody wants to advertise their success with a program it doesn't mean they hate every other program. The odd part is that it's never the top guys. So, you get RTS guys saying Juggernaut could never work and Juggernaut guys saying Cube is stupid while Mike T., CWS, and Lilly are doing seminars together. Wendler, Rippetoe, and Broz have done seminars together. I'm willing to bet Wendler isn't afraid to buy Simmons a beer. EFS is full of logs from guys who train all different methods. I wonder why that is? Probably has something to do with Carb Backloading.

Dtaps, I'm very confused. So if I train hard and consistently regardless of what method/program/template I use I to can get stronger? GENIUS

All the training philosophy stuff is great. Each philosophy has it's own unique things. Each one was also created because it worked really well for the guy who created it. Obviously each philosophy will work very well for other people too, but there will also be a lot of people who will not respond at all to certain philosophies. Those people should never say the philosophy itself sucks, but that it didn't work for them.
Also, I think it's childish that people are forced to leave gyms just because they don't follow a philosophy to a T. I understand that you want your training partners to be supportive, helpful, and willing to be there even if they're not lifting to help others out. But kicking them out just because they don't necessarily agree with everything you say about training is dumb and it just shows you have a complex. Never met Louie, but I've heard stories about how people have been kicked out of that gym. I'm sure there are other reasons, but I'd hope it was just because they didn't get along and it wasn't just because they didn't do box squats or something retarded like that.1708 total @220 Raw
