Anyone have other ways they make a good income to fund their travels? I'm only 21 and want to get all this solo traveling out of my system before settling down (if that ever happens). I'd be happy just being a nomad my whole life.

This is actually a good post.
In THIS ECONOMY, a home is not good. I say this in the event you lose your job, you are tied to one area to find employment. This puts you at a big disadvantage. Depending where you live, some states have taxes of 10,000-13,000 dollars a year on the house. THAT IS LOST MONEY! It isn't building you any equity. The house in that situation is a HORRIBLE INVESTMENT. I say this because that house will need to have a massive appreciation in value to overcome the Home taxes, upkeep costs, acquisition costs, and interest from the mortgage.
If you crunch the numbers there, owning a home is a horrible investment and you will never have an increase in value the way you would have maybe 10+ years ago when the housing market was exploding.
So you have an item (the house) that is NOT easily sold off in this bad market. Have you lose your job and must relocate, you will likely need to rent out the house or not be able to find good tenants You will not live in the "home you own". I see this is as a major headache.
Owning a home was a terrific investment years ago. Under Obama and today's economic climate, I would heavily deter someone from buying a home.... UNLESS it is a Two family and their rent is paying your mortgage. In that case, you have provided yourself free living expenses. THIS IS A GOOD INVESTMENT IN THIS SITUATION.Godhand502 = the man!

lol wut? You got paid $3700 to travel the world? explain...
-I have an $860 mortgage payment
-I get $425/mo from 3 roommates for rent
-$1275 - 860 = 415... x 9 months = $3735 untaxed
and how much $ did you make in those 9 months? cause i made around $28,000.
I see your point OP, just saying some people have different goals.

Townhouse where I am:
Mortgage 800/ month
Insurance year (minimum 900)
Taxes the year $10,000
Association fees/month $150
The Property taxes and insurance go up each year here.
Sewage bill TOWN cant recall couple hundred
Sewage Bill County -cant recall couple hundred
Lots of money!
Factor in if anything goes wrong (and it has) you will be using your free time on the phone with repair people, getting estimates, then paying out the ass for a repair. You lose opportunity costs in life with that. I recommend everyone rent and not do this.Godhand502 = the man!

lol wut? Insurance and taxes are all included in that mortgage payment... and the numbers you gave are all well over double what i pay... and i have no association fees, its a house not a condo.
as for the water/trash/sewer, again way less than half of the amount that you gave.
And its not very often things go wrong. Ive owned 3 homes in the past 6 years, so far only one major thing happened (to a gas furnace) and that cost me $300... everything else was small little things i could fix myself a few times a year... also keep in mind my NEWEST house was built in 1901...
