i remember seeing something on this a few years ago. I think you can actually get a smaller version for home use but it wont do anything that intricate.

Selective Laser Sintering... big voodoo... we had someone trying to sell us a system at work and they made some of our parts using it. Looked like steel, felt like steel... very cool. An off shoot of Rapid Prototyping, which is usually made from plastic. You need the 3D CAD data exported in a SLT format, most CAD design systems are able to do it. The actual production of the piece can be time consuming and the parameters need to be set to get the right density, surface finish and so on.
