This is a pretty common misconception with protein shakes. I see a lot of people saying you need to take them x hours before/after gym etc etc.
Thing is, protein shakes are a SUPPLEMENT. and by definition supplement means:
"something added to complete a thing, supply a deficiency, or reinforce or extend a whole."
meaning, protein shakes are really only needed to assist with getting enough protein for the day. theres nothing more to it. theyre not some magical muscle building drink that you must take to see gains, which a lot of people seem to think is the case. i only take them if im low on protein, which i can generally get enough from regular foods anyway. or if i crave/feel like having a shake!

They are meant to help you SUPPLEMENT what you are already doing. So drinking 6 shakes a day is a waste because it's better to get your protien and what not from an actual food source. Although sometimes it is hard to eat that often so shakes are great for that. You can take them whenever you want, but there are some times where it will benefit you more. 1) early in the morning, as soon as you wake up 2) 1 hour or so before a work out 3) right after a work out 4) before you go to bed. I mainly have them early in the morning and right after a work out.
Pain is temporary, it may last for a minute, or an hour, or a day, or even a year. But eventually it will subside and something else will take its place.... If i quit however it will last forever.
Anyone can give up, it's the easiest thing in the world to do. But to hold it together when everyone would understand if you fell apart, thats true strength.

Protein shakes themselves are not necessary, but the protein in them is.
If you are cutting, your hunger will be more satisfied by getting your protein from solid foods; chicken, tuna, etc...
If you are bulking then they may be great, as you will have enough food to work with so you dont get hungry.
All in all, whats most important is that at the end of the day you have met your minimum protein requirement; the source of the protein doesnt really matter.
Hope that helps.

You can drink the shake whenever you want. You need to realize you're not drinking the shake for the shake, but for the Protein in the shake. It depends on your diet, if you're not going to ingest as much Protein as you need, then you should take the shake. Remember, Protein shakes are supplements, much like Iron pills if you have an Iron deficiency. Also, muscle isn't built while you're working out, it's built after you work out. This is why you should still be ingesting a high amount of Protein on days where you don't work out.

No more than 1/day
Please don't actually drink that many protein shakes! You kidneys will break down because they wont be able to break it all down, and you will get very ill. Just like anything else too much protein can make you sick. Besides your body wont be able to use half of that amount anyways.
Good article on with special regards to athletes
