.. interesting read.
What do you guys think about volume vs. intensity? For instance, I was doing my heavy day of 5x5 yesterday. I keep failing my final squat heavy set (cutting), so took a different approach. Instead of 5x5, I did 4x5 and used bigger jumps in weight.
Usual:..........Change:
5x135..........5x135
5x170..........5x195
5x225..........5x245
5x250..........5x275
2-3x275
Now, what matters more: The fact that I reduced the total work done (a negative), or that I hit the 5x275 and effectively increased the intensity (positive)?

Volume vs. Intensity
The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one. - Mark Twain
I don't want to get to the end of my life and find that I have just lived the length of it. I want to have lived the width of it as well.
If God didn't want you to eat animals, he wouldn't have made them out of meat.

Actually, plenty. But books on the subject have already been written.
All three factors--Volume, Intensity, and Frequency will have a huge effect on your results. Regardless of how you juggle the three around though, when you reach the limits of your recovery ability, your rate of progress will level off.
How best you do that is open to experimentation. No brain, no gain.

Nothing specific.
Rather, I suggest you do some experimenting with some different schemes. There have been boatloads of studies done in an attempt to zero-in on the 'best' protocol, but there are so many variables involved in peoples' body mechanics--bone lengths, muscle fiber makeup, hormonal differences, recovery ability, etc., that the best they can do is provide some general guidelines. After that, it's up to each of us to figure out the fine details of what works best for ourselves.
If you haven't seen this already, it may be of interest to you. And while it doesn't specifically address bodybuilding, it will still give you some things to think about:
No brain, no gain.
