What's stopping chemists from making a 100% harmless recreational drug? (srs)

I haven't taken science at above a college physics level, but I got to thinking: Why can't chemists, or pharmacologists create a drug that taps into the pleasure/happiness center of your brain, without causing side effects?

It's just that, we have drugs that can regulate every bodily function imaginable. We have drugs that treat every possible disease.

Why isn't something like this possible?

The problem with any psychoactive drugs that cause euphoria is that it can't sustain the feeling. They are all very small, simple molecules that work on different receptor sites - the most common cause a flood of dopamine that is the pleasure neurotransmitter. When the brain starts producing too much dopamine homeostatis kicks in and the body will try and compensate feeling too good all the time by requiring more and more dopamine to have the same feeling. Thats why addiction kicks in and it requires more and more of the drug to feel euphoria.

If a drug company could come up with a substance that got you high but had no negative feedback they would be rich. But, there are plenty of home chemicals you can play with. You just have to be extremely careful with them. Its not as easy as mixing vinegar and baking soda to make something to give you a buzz. They can always be manufactured improperly and have some very bad repercussions when that kind of thing happens.

A mod that's a PIHKAL fan...interesting. You can make a lot of stuff easily. Mescaline can be extracted from legal cacti with food grade chemicals. And a lot of stuff can be done with simple alcohol extractions, but the result sludge is nasty as hell usually.

no such thing. Everyone is different. Noone has ever overdosed on weed, but they have died as a result of using it. People with specific heart problems etc can die from smoking weed. A drug is a drug because it either does something to your mind or your body, impossible to make a harmless drug.

Also consider that weed has been shown to shrink cancerous tumors or at least slow the rate of growth which is why as you said it is a threat to big pharma. So many benefits, so much money to lose in many industries if it was legal.

Weed is the least negative of all the recreational drugs both in individual terms and in societal terms, while alcohol is among the worst. Last I checked you don't get many stoners coming home to beat their wives and children, blah blah blah. Tobacco is a bastard- all the negatives (and many more) of smoking marijuana, yet none of the benefits.

Sucks, but fact of the matter is that weed is illegal, so I've no interest in using it. However, to demonize it is ****ing stupid...on the level of demonizing AAS.
