how do you shift down/slow down when your coming to a stop or red light?
do you just press the break then clutch and switch gear to 1st gear?

Control and rediness. If the there is no drag on the wheels from the powertrain the brakes can be too powerful if needed suddenly. If the light changes you don't want to have to muck about working out what is the right gear to keep moving so you can be more smooth. For increased smoothness I like to heel and toe block downshifts so you don't jerk into the lower gear.

Don't hold the clutch in OR put it in neutral, there is no drive to the axle and can be dangerous in wet weather, corners etc.
Shift down as needed, 5th to 4th or 3rd and then if you predict the lights right you can take off in the appropriate gear.
Don't be afraid to use your brakes as it's cheaper to replace the pads than a gear box, but downshift most gears at the same time without it hitting too high RPM to avoid stress on the box.

fuarr why dont you just roll down in the lights in 4/5 (whatever youre in) then go into neutral when your revs have lowered. (all whilst slowly breaking)
when you can anticipate that the lights are gonna change or if they have changed, then get into 1st. or if the lights change before you come to a complete stop, then just get into the right gear and bam off you go?

Two ways:
1) For long distance stopping
-Shift into neutral
-Coast to a stop
-Apply brakes only when you have slowed down.
A car in neutral will travel further than one in gear, but if you need to get out of a situation you will have to be quick on your feet.
2) For shorter stops
-Apply brakes
-Clutch in just before you stall
-Shift into neutral
The mechanical drag will slow you down quicker when you're in a gear. Plus the fuel shuts off when you coast in gear or downshift to a stop so you do save some gas which is helpful lol.*Always Pick 3 Crew*

you engine braking guys are wrong
my mechanic, who has been a mechanic for 40 years, tole me to pop it in neutral. Brakes are much cheaper to replace than a clutch or transmission. It is smarter to wear down the breaks and replace them instead of placing stress your transmission.
