Massacre1 is right. I'm about three weeks from graduation and still have a 4.0 (Political Science major, Philosophy minor). It's not easy; you'll need:
- Strong OCD, because a 3.9 has no significant difference from a 4.0.
- Strong time management ability
- Strong intelligence, because fact is, not everyone can pull a 4.0 in even one semester. Doing it in eight in a row is a grind.
One thing that could help is to be open to summer courses. This opens you up to dropping courses in the fall and spring that could impact your grade point average.

Depends on the subject matter...
Objective information/ Science/ Math = all depend on you and work ethic...
Subjective information leaves you at the mercy of the teacher... such as writing; some teachers hold power and what they say goes, even if it doesn't make sense, it works. Luckily if you're science-oriented there are few classes of that matter, and they're a breeze.
It isn't impossible to maintain a 4.0 but it is extremely difficult and most people around you won't be trying to do the same, which becomes discouraging. HS =/= undergrad, at all.
If graduate school/ further education is of interest, GPA matters for great careers and schools...; if all you need/want is a bachelors in something then work... I wouldn't stress over it.
4.0 isn't too realistic from what I know... a 3.8 is a 4.0 in reality as silly as it sounds...
Ultimately it's not always ALL GPA; various experience(s) and interpersonal skills (people person, connect with anyone and everyone is a skill many people lack), and GPA (in other words, work ethic)... is what truly makes you a candidate for whatever you plan on doing. Don't close yourself in from life to attain a 4.0... when someone with a 3.5, work and life experience, as well as people-skills will crush you at an interview.

maintaining 4.0 is always gonna be hard unless you go to a completely chit school
but you will have to
-prioritize school over practically everything, brb not going out this weekend i have to study
-have really good time management/self discipline
-get a little bit lucky as profs/TAs can fuk you over at the drop of a hat

the hardest part of a 4.0 is consistency. this means that you cant have a bad semester or any major slip ups. also you have to keep in mind the environment you are in as well as the people you are around, as any substantial negative influence on your life could drop that 4.0 down to a 3.96 fairly easily.
