I do 95% of my HIIT on a recumbent bike. It is definitely as effective as running sprints. If you are doing HIIT correctly you should be doing life or death, all out sprints for 15-30 seconds with a rest period between. I am going to film myself doing this so I can show my clients what HIIT means. Not everyone understands the concept. I like the recumbent bike because it saves my back and knees from the track.

I will say, however, that I actually had to find a new means of doing HIIT instead of the recumbant bike once my glutes were in simply because it was painful to sit on the bike longer than 5 minutes

I was at Layne Norton's seminar last Friday. He explained how HIIT on a bike is prefferd over running because it uses more muscles or uses them differently (don't quote me on that, he said it much better lol). Basically from what I got, when you're running you actually lift your feet off the ground slightly, but on a bike you're constantly working the hips. On the eliptical you can actually use arms as well, so I'd assume that would be even better. Car pushes work too! I can't remember if there was a study on this, but a friend of his Dr. Jacob Wilson has a lot of info on HIIT out there.

I don't do my cool down on the bike for this reason, I get up and walk when i am done.

    Thumbs up

I definitely do and advocate HIIT on the Recumbant Bike, works great and putting the legs in an elevated position really works... Especially the Glutes! I still do Sprints, Truck Pushes/Pulls, Rower, Etc... I enjoy mixing it up! As long as you are going all out... It works great!
