This is definitely a great discussion starter that brings up multiple topics dealing with muscle mass, weight loss, and an advantage to training when it comes to dieting for weight loss.

It's really not so difficult to get those calories in when you know how. So honestly, it just sounds like you don't.
The reason so many people gain weight and become obese is because they eat very calorie-dense processed food (not grilled chicken and asparagus) and are very sedentary.
I'm not saying you should be eating junk food to meet your calories, but perhaps you need to be more creative with your meals, as well as less strict with your food selections. Even seemingly “bad” foods such as donuts can be perfectly neutral to health (& even beneficial in a psychological sense) as long as most of your diet is still composed of whole & minimally refined foods. Add thick sauces to your pasta. Have some full-fat ice cream every day and cheesecake after dinner. Drink (chocolate) milk with meals. Etc. etc. 5000 calories will be a piece of cake.

Not to be rude, but you're assuming an awful lot about me in saying that I don't know how to get those calories in and that I only stick to whole natural foods.
I know how to eat and am well versed in nutrition. The point isn't that its so hard to figure out how to do it. The point is that I'm amazed that I have to and find it annoying at times, which shows the impact that carrying an excessive mount of muscle has on ones calorie needs.trainingwithryan.substack.com

i didnt watch more than two minutes but if your training and trying to build muscle as opposed to just fat its gonna be different. Your body has a genetic potential to muscle and as you approach that id imagine actually gaining mass is harder. plus more muscle plus training will raise TDEE
You are not a fragile ornament ready to collapse into an exhausted mass of goo simply because you squatted more than once in a 7-day week.
It'd be like preparing your entire life to bang 100 chicks in a row, getting tan, hitting the gym, making sure your hair looks right and reading the Kama Sutra, only to realize when you get there that you're gay and cannot get hard in the presence of women.

its a matter of testosterone.
Which goes right along with your ideas of men and women's ability to lose fat.
I am 6'2 210 right now but im steadily rising. im trying to get to 225. so i suppose some of us just have a bit more genetic potential. (not being a douche j/s)
Like it has been stated, genetics cant be avoided naturally. Things are the way they are.Professional Athlete Crew

Well, I watched the whole thing.
You said - "disadvantage of bulking is having to eat more food...". This is such an individual thing. I bulked from 194 to 210 over the course of 5-6 months (pretty slow and steady). I was consuming close to 4k calories at the end...and it was hard not to consume more. I used to be very over weight, and eating is a complete non-issue for me and many others. I have to watch the calories closely on a bulk too or I could go over by a long shot quickly.
This is why I tell people - whether you know how to eat or not - knowing/understanding what and how much you consume is one of the best things you can do for yourself. The 6ft-150# toothpicks and 5'-7"-275# couch potatoes have something in common....they don't truly understand what they are consuming from a caloric point of view - forgetting completely macro/micro totals.
My disadvantage is this...whether I am bulking or cutting...I go to bed hungry most nights. Forever hungry because I care about my long term health I guess.*Unaesthetic Crew* Disregard V-Taper, Acquire PRs Thread

That is pretty awesome... i would say you are blessed and cursed... haha... whenever i bump my calories past 3700 or so i start laying down fat too fast. But i have never been truly lean when i start my bulks. Usually cut too hard and bulk to hard. I have been trying to change that these last 2 years though.

call me a noob but you say you've been eating 5k calories and not gaining weight, have you ever tried eating 10k calories?
The guys you are talking about that are 300 pounds could easily clear 10k calories in a day. Coupled with low leptin levels and also being genetically disposed to store fat = weight gain. everyones different.
