I can't think of a reason that your GPU would interfere with sound, unless it's shorting the mobo somehow. You can get audio cards with 5.1 for stupid cheap now that 7.1 is the go-to.

new card got an HDMI port on it? Check your sound settings in control panel and make sure you sending sound out the correct device/port.
