    About:

Nasser El Sonbaty (born October 15, 1965 in Germany) is a retired IFBB professional bodybuilder.

A graduate from the University of Augsburg in Germany, earning a university degree in history, political science and sociology; Nasser began bodybuilding in 1983. His first competition was a Junior State Championship in Germany in 1985, where he placed 6th. His first appearance in the Mr. Olympia competition was in 1994, where he placed 7th.
In total, Nasser competed in 13 amateur shows and 53 IFBB Pro shows. He qualified for 10 consecutive Mr. Olympia contests and entered nine Mr. Olympia competitions. His best placing in the Mr. Olympia competition was in 1997, where he placed 2nd. Nasser is also known for being the bodybuilder who poses at guest posings and bodybuilds wearing spectacles, for having the ability to speak several languages, as well as being able to weigh over 300 pounds in the offseason and still show his full abdominal muscles. Nasser is often referred to as the "Uncrowned Mr. Olympia," "The Wizard of Truth," and "Huge Nasser". He has been featured in many international fitness and bodybuilding magazines articles as well as being pictured on over 60 covers, including FLEX magazine.

His father is Egyptian and his mother is from the former Yugoslavia, the Sandžak city of Novi Pazar. He currently resides in San Diego and Costa Mesa, CA

    His Bio:

    Q: Where were you born?
    N: Germany.

Q: Do you have a big family?
N: I have two sisters and two brothers.

    Q: Are you married?
    N: No.

Q: Do you have any children?
    N: No children.

Q: How educated is Nasser El Sonbaty?
N: I attended the University of Augsburg in Germany and have
a Masters Degree in History, Political Science and Sociology.

Q: When did you become interested in bodybuilding?
    N: I’ve been working out since 1983.

Q: When and where was your first contest, and how did you place?
N: First contest as a Junior competitor in 1985 took place in Germany.
I came in 6th at this state championship contest.

Q: How many contests have you done to-date?
    N: 13 Amateur shows and 53 pro-shows.
Click here to see the stats.

Q: How many first place wins and runner-ups have you had?
    N: I’ve had 6 Pro-show wins, 11 runner-ups and 15 third places.

Q: How many days a week do you work out, and what’s the average time per workout?
N: I train with weights 5 to 6 times a week (once a day) during the offseason. Pre contest I follow the same routine but incorporate cardio twice daily.

Q: Do you have a favorite body part and exercise?
N: I don’t have a favorite body part nor do I have a favorite exercise. Everyone who is honest prefers machines over free-weights, because machines are more convenient and cause less muscle pain and require less concentration and are generally less dangerous. BUT, if you like to have real gains you have to train hard and heavy, and you have to chose always the LEAST favorite exercises which actually give you the best possible results. So go for the least favorite exercises, the free weights… and go for the muscle pain!

Q: During the off-season, what’s your daily average percentage of body fat?
N: During the off-season, I’m never out of shape. By the way, I’m the ONLY bodybuilder who can guest pose with over 300lbs. and have my abs still visible!

Q: Do you belive in training “light” at any time, why or why not?
N:Before training light, I’ll take another day off until I’m refreshed and can train hard and heavy again.

Q: Do you belive in massive amounts of protein (ie, 1.5gr per lb. of body weight or more), why or why not?
N: Everyone has different DNA and a different gene pool and different metabolism. I belong to the group-type who can maintain my size by not having protein for weeks. To put size on, I do not need more than 100gr of protein daily. High protein intake for me is only important during my pre contest diet.

Q: What kind of daily caloric intake do you have during off-season?
N: I do have a middle-slow/middle-fast metabolism and I’m not a big eater at all. During the off -season I don’t consume more than 3000 to 4000 calories per day. It doesn’t necessarily mean the bigger you are the more you’re eating.

Q: When preparing for a contest, how does your carb intake differ from the off-season intake?
N: My carb intake during off-season is about 80% of my total daily caloric intake with 20% comprising of protein and fats. My pre-contest carb intake is around 80 – 250 grams per day with between 400 – 600 grams of protein per day.

Q: How many exercises per body part do you typically do in a workout?
N: I’m following Joe Weider’s Instinct Principle. Sometimes I train just one body part per workout and sometimes 2 to 4 different muscles per workout.

Q: Calves and Abs… what’s your best advice for training these two body parts?
N: Everyone can develop calves up to a certain degree/level, but people with better genetics will always have better calves. If you don’t develop calves after two years of training, you will never have great calves. Two to three exercises per session is absolutely enough. To make your abs clearly visible, you have to do 3 things: super set ab exercises plus decrease you daily calorie intake over weeks/months and increase your cardio on a daily basis.

Q: Do you think machine work can help you achieve mass just as good as free weights?
N: No. Nobody grows really bigger by using machines. You can, and you have to use machines as well, but only in combination with free weights.

Q: If you could change one thing about Bodybuilding, what would it be?
N: The general public knows to little about the sport of Bodybuilding, and if they seem to know something, it’s mostly negative information combined with ignorance and prejudice. The negative view on Bodybuilding comes mostly from lazy, physically inactive people and from jealous people in general. Daily newspapers and television should report about Bodybuilding and they shouldn’t be just reports about pros & cons, but rather about local and international shows, like that of any other sport, and not stuff about good or bad things in Bodybuilding. Nobody starts discussions about soccer or football and if it’s good or bad or healthy or unhealthy.

Q: How much weight will you normally gain during the off-season?
N: Generally, my off-season body weight is 40lbs higher than my contest weight.

Q: How many weeks does it normally take you to get ready for a contest, such as the Mr. “O”?
N: 10 to 12 weeks of strict dieting.

About:Lee Andrew Priest McCutcheon nicknamed "The Blond Myth" (born 6 July 1972 in Newcastle, Australia) is a former IFBB professional bodybuilder.

    His Bio:

Lee Andrew Priest McCutcheon, fondly known as “The Blond Myth” was born on July 6, 1972 in Newcastle, Australia. He is an IFBB professional bodybuilder. Lee Priest was raised together with his two-year old sister by their mother, who is also into bodybuilding in Wallsend, Newcastle, NSW, Australia. It is where Priest attended Plattsburg Primary school. He got into this field at a very young age; in fact, he has been weight-training since the age of 13.

Lee Priest's mother was also a famous bodybuilding competitor and appeared with Lee on stage posing together once. He has gained immense popularity and respect in the bodybuilding world because of his down-to-earth manners. At 5 feet 4 inches, Lee Priest is one of the shortest professional bodybuilders who has made a mark for himself in this profession. When not competing, he weighs as much as 285 pounds, but normally cuts down to 220 to 225 pounds in competition season.

In September 2006, Lee Priest was unfortunately suspended from the IFBB since he competed in a rival organisation. However, he was reinstated back in the IFBB in June 2008 and given a chance to qualify again for the 2008 Mr. Olympia. But due to a torn bicep, he did not compete that year and instead planned to come back in the Australian IFBB Pro Grand Prix in 2009. He is one of the best bodybuilders of today's time who doesn't believe in giving up! Lee Priest's bodybuilding is an inspiration for many young and aspiring bodybuilders.

There are many highlights in the bodybuilding career of Lee Priest, including 1986 Sydney Bodybuilding Classic 1st place; 1989 Mr. Australia 1st place; 1990 Mr. Australia 1st place; 1991 Mr. Australia 1st place; 1993 Niagara Falls Pro 9th; 1994 Ironman Pro 4th; 1995 Arnold Classic 9th; 1995 Ironman Pro 3rd; 1995 South Beach Pro 4th; 1996 Ironman Pro 4th; 1996 San Jose Pro 6th; 1997 Ironman Pro 2nd; 1997 San Jose Pro 4th; 1997 Arnold Classic 7th; 1997 Mr. Olympia 6th; 1997 Grand Prix Hungary 3rd; 1997 Grand Prix Germany 3rd; 1997 Grand Prix Spain 3rd; 1997 Grand Prix England 6th; 1997 Grand Prix Czech 5th; 1997 Grand Prix Russia 9th; 1997 Grand Prix Finland 9th.

    Data
    2004: up-to-date
    2003: Luck and pitch
    2002: Comeback
    2001: Setbacks
    2000: Large successes
    1997-1999: Beginning as pro
    1991-1997: The beginning

I started working out at the age of nineteen weighing in at 140 lbs without being ambitious with regard to a professional career.

After four years of consistent and intense workouts I felt the decision to participate in the Newcomer Championship 1994 in Hessen, Germany. Unfortunately I hurt my shoulder, so that I was unable to compete. Accordingly I had to delay my first competition.

In 1995 after having recovered from my shoulder injury, I competed in the Bachgau Cup in Babenhausen weighing in at 243 lbs and won the heavyweight and overall title. One week later I received 2nd place at the Grosser Preis von Hessen.

In 1997 after 7 years of hard workouts, I won the Hessen Championships and one week later also the German Nationals.
Being the first german bodybuilder ever, who received his pro card immediately after his victory at the Nationals, I competed in the German Pro Grand Prix in Offenbach, Germany. Although I was able again to make improvements in terms of my overall physique, I could literally see that I still lacked in refinement and muscle maturity in comparison to the world's leading men. It was crystal clear, that in addition to the nessecary improvements I would have to make regarding refinement and muscle maturity, I would also need an additional 10-15 lbs of lean muscle mass in order to achieve the competitive state, that enables me to become established in the world's pro elite. Incidentially, I placed 10th, weighing in at 258 lbs.

Night of Champions 1998 9th place

In January 1998 I started dieting to get myself ready for the Night Of Champions in New York. I wanted to add another 8-10 lbs of muscles, and due to the help and support of my training partner Marc Arnold I accomplished this goal. I actually made every effort to come in at my best and entered the show in a very shredded and cut condition. The crowd considered me top 6 material, but distinctly different from the opinion of the fans, unfortunately the judges thought different. I placed 9th, weighing approximately 265 lbs, while being in the best shape of my life. I was a little dejected, but I was convinced, if I would go through and try to improve increasingly I would soon get the recognition I deserve.

Night of Champions 1999 4th place

In 1999, one year after my first attendance in New York, I returned tremendously improved to the Big Apple. This time my contest weight was approximately 270 lbs. After an incredible battle I received again a verdict, that I did not deserve according to the crowds opinion. I placed 4th, while the judges declared Dillet the winner, although he was considerably off his best.
Nonetheless, I was delighted, that I qualified for the Olympia in Las Vegas. I had fullfilled my dream to become one of the greatest bodybuilders in the world and moreover I was getting closer to my final destination. Motivated due to my recent accomplishments, I trained as hard as I could throughout my Olympia preparation and was able to increase my bodyweight up to 275 lbs. Sadly, the judges refused to acknowledge that I was great conditioned, by giving just a few callouts to me. Therefore I placed out of the top ten. But this time I was not so disappointed and dejected, because I gained a lot of precious experience, which will be very helpful to stand the man in the upcoming shows. Don't worry folks ! The German Beast will return next year and even bigger and better than ever before.

In the beginning of the new millenium, I began my preparation for the NOC. In February during my preparation I hurt my shoulder (diagnosis: torn muscle on my shoulder joint). This injury was due to my attitude to always train as hard and devoted as I can. Improvements necessarily require 100% effort. After a short examination, my doctor recommended to rest 4-6 weeks, but contrary to the advice of my doctor, I resumed my workout after only five days of rest. The subsequent weeks went by without any injury and I therefore flew to Toronto, thoroughly confident in myself. When I partcipated in the meeting of the atheletes, I became aware, that I will be on stage in common with bodybuilding greats like Mike Matarazzo and Dexter Jackson, that's why I basically did not anticipate a victory for myself anymore. But after prejudging, I was conscious, that this time it is between me and Dexter. This time I defeated Dexter and won the show.
The following week I flew to New York and was considered to be the possible Night Of Champions Winner this year. But at Beacon Theatre somthing contrary happened. This time was my turn to place 2nd, while Jay Cutler won the show. Granted, Cutler was in awesome shape. Nevertheless the audience, which I had already captured, when attending in New York for the first time, was repeatedly discontented with the outcome.

    Mr. Olympia 2000 7th place

In spring 2000 I have been victorious and generally very successful and although I've been aware, that it would be pretty hard to repeat that kind of success, I was confident that I might be able to reach the final at my second Mr. Olympia attendance. I decided to come in heavier but not as cut as usual. Weighing in at 280 lbs, I was the heaviest competitor and in common with Ronnie Coleman also the biggest one on stage.
After prejudging I placed 5th and wanted to confirm that by doing a great posing routine in the evening. But unfortunately this evening things didn't go my way and so I ultimately placed 7th. Nonetheless I was satisfied to be in the top ten as well as I enjoyed to face all those critics, who foolishly gaped at me when I encountered them.

When my sponsor and myself reviewed the current situation, I decided not to compete in spring 2001, after three consecutive attendances in New York. Accordingly I had plenty of time to travel around the globe to comply with all those demands for guest appearances and seminars.

    Mr. Olympia 2001 14th place

In July 2001 I started my preparation for the coveted Big O. Experts considered me a top three candidate. As opposed to my basic attitude to enter a show as huge as humanly possible, which always enabled me to achieve the highly demanding goals that I had set for myself, I submitted myself this time to the advice and recommendations of acquaintances and friends. Therefore I wanted to enter the most significant and prestigious contest worldwide dryer and sharper than ever before but neglected to focus simultaneously on size and fullness. I put myself under too much pressure. I suppose, that I pushed the envelope too high this time by doing 2,5 hours cardio a day in addition to 2 hours weight training twice daily. As a result of the extensive workouts my upper body really lacked fullness in comparison to my usual condition, but I considerably improved in the thigh and back departments, which used to be my weak points. But then five weeks out of Vegas, unfortunately my belly button ruptured again and this time so unfavourably that it looked pretty disgusting, but it was too late, no more time for surgery.

    Mr. Olympia 2001 14th place

Although I was slightly off my best, my shape was quite good (visible on the enclosed pictures, which have been shot in Vegas at the Mr. O 2001) That's why I was self-confident when I stepped on stage, but whatever I did, I did not get any callouts. In the end I placed 14th, while being a crowd favorite, an outcome, I wasn't pleased with at all and more importantly, it was the worst Mr. Olympia result of my entire career. Basically a verdict, I had to deal with very often in the past, but as distinct from the past, I actually thought, that I already pertain to the ten best bodybuilders in the world, particularly due to my accomplishments last year. I haven't got the slightest idea, what this verdict was suppossed to mean. Neither am I able to evaluate what really happened there. That being said, it was obvious for everyone, that I was definitely good enough to place in the top 10 and the majority of the people thought so, too. But the judges literally refused to pay attention to me and put me repeadetly at a disadvantage towards the other competitors, who I had already defeated easily a couple of times and who supposedly looked better than me this time according to the judges testimony.
Don't get me wrong, but that seems pretty ridiculous to me !!!!

    Mr. Olympia 2001 14th place

Due to this incident, I was in desperation and extremely dejected as well as frustrated, because I had put my heart and soul into this preparation and all the efforts I had made hadn' t been worth it, that's why I aimed to retire indeed under these circumstances. But I am too ambitious and purposeful regarding the iron game to give up. Nor am I someone who wavers in self-pity. In the sport of bodybuilding like in all other sports you also have to be able to deal with defeat, and basically defeat is something I am already used to, because, as I described before, I had to make a lot of painful experiences in terms of defeat throughout my bodybuilding career, which were pretty hard to endure.
Morover loved ones and friends encouraged me to keep on going.
Needless to say, the German Beast will not surrender and will stay the course as well as keep up the hard work, and even harder than before, because slowly but surely the day will come when it's all worth it.
I assure you folks, I am desperade to return to the Big Apple. I will be ready for the NOC 2002, physically and mentally.
Right after my return to Germany, I went to the hospital for surgery on my belly button, which was ruptured during the contest preparation. Thus a rest of four weeks was required.

Good Stuff. Better than a lot of crap I've seen out there. Some of these pics Ive never seen, which is a nice touch. In general, bodybuilding is shrouded in a lot of mystery and speculation. Many bodybuilders play with their own history to make themselves sound more interesting. ex, Schwarzenegger stated that he only got beat twice in his book, Education of a Bodybuilder, but in one photo in that very same book he is wearing a competition number mmm....Back in the old days the magazines would quote sizes of various muscle parts ect..ridiculous things. It is/was all about controlling how the public views your image, so the average guy never really knew a lot about the pros. I mean how many guys named Flex have we had? Yeah that's a common name for parents to name their children! lol. This thread focuses mostly on the last twenty years, which is good, but incomplete. The reality is that the bodybuilding magazines controlled bodybuilding for many years. It's not as bad as it was, but it's still present. That's pretty weird. There is no other sport that I'm aware of where magazine publishers have so much power. Anyway enough rambling...

Possibly one way to improve the thread would be to flush out some of stuff from the old days. You make a pretty big jump from Sandow to the modern age. I would like to see some stuff on the different federations and their history AAU, NPC, IFBB, NABBA, WBBG, WBF, ect.. You do a good job of covering the Mr. Olympia's, but before 1965 there was about thirty years of contests. ie, Bert Goodrich, 1939 Mr. America. AAU, I think. Then we have Sigmund Klein, Clancy Ross, Steve Reeves, Reg Park, Bill Pearl, Robby Robinson. bunch more. I'm not even sure a complete history could be written as it would require so much research and half the people are dead or aren't talking. In the past, many bodybuilders were afraid to talk, because people like Joe Weider or Bob Hoffman would slam them down and make it impossible to live or make any money. Now these guys are dead or too old to do anything. Hell, the anabolics were kept quiet for years... Even now, that whole thing is pretty tightly controlled. Ha, pretty weird sport huh?

Good job though! Nice to see a young guy interested in the history! Keep it up bro!!

A great wealth of information i thread. Repped.

I always used to wonder who was the very first bodybuilder to win a pro card. Was it Larry Scott?

    His BB.com Profile:http://www.bodybuilders.com/gunter.htm

    About:

Il Classico Günter Schlierkamp (born February 2, 1970) is a German IFBB pro bodybuilder.
Schlierkamp was born in Olfen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany, where he grew up on a farm. Given his friendly demeanour and the fact that he is almost always smiling, Schlierkamp is one of the sports' most popular pros and commonly a fan favourite. In 1996 he married Carmen Jourst and moved to the USA, but they divorced in 2003. Four years later, he married American personal trainer Kim Lyons in March 2007.
After a fourth place showing at the 2005 Mr. Olympia contest, Schlierkamp started training with legendary trainer Charles Glass. Schlierkamp had trained with Glass in 2002, and finished above 8-time Mr. Olympia Ronnie Coleman at the GNC Show of Strength. Hoping to gain an edge for the 2006 Mr. Olympia Title by training with Glass, Schlierkamp didn't manage to improve on the previous year's finish and ended in 10th place.
In 2006 he had a role in an American movie Beerfest, released by the Broken Lizard comedy group.

    His Bio:

    Gunter's Story

Gunter was born on February 2, 1970, in Olfen, Germany. His parents were farmers and Gunter along with his brothers and sisters worked on the family farm. His parents valued hard work and considered sports unproductive and a waste of time.

When Gunter was 12, he saw Arnold Schwarzenegger in the film, "Conan The Barbarian" and "Pumping Iron". He was amazed to see how a person could sculpt his body through weight training and wanted to try it for himself. At age 16, Gunter finally got the opportunity to start training at a gym for the first time and after two years of training he began preparing for his first competition, which he won.
Gunter's Heart Felt Thank You To Those Who Have Helped Him Along The Way...
In November 1993, Gunter won the heavyweight division at the World Championships, which earned him the "Mr. Universe" title and launched his professional career. In December 1996, Gunter moved to the United States and began his life in America.
In addition to his professional bodybuilding, Gunter began acting and modeling, appearing in several commercials, movies, and publications. Gunter has built a sterling reputation throughout the fitness and bodybuilding industry which has made him a highly valued representative and asset to the companies and brands with whom he chooses to work.

Chief among these companies is Weider, who Gunter has enjoyed working with since 1997. Gunter's dedication has been recognized by many, including the readership of "Sports Revue Magazine" who voted him the "Greatest German Bodybuilder of All Time" in 2003.

Gunter's career has opened up a lot of unique opportunities which he feels very blessed to have had. He has traveled around the world participating in several bodybuilding and fitness competitions, met several interesting people, and inspired many achieve their own health and fitness goals.
Gunter is married to Kim Lyons, who is best known as one of the trainers on the hit reality show "The Biggest Loser" on NBC.
Recent career highlights for Gunter include a part in the movie "Beerfest". He also placed 4th at the 2005 Mr. Olympia. Currently, Gunter is working with several companies as a consultant in product development.

Gunter draws inspiration from his fans of all ages who often e-mail him to share how he has inspired them to improve their overall health and fitness. Their kind words and inspirational stories motivate him to keep going on the path he has chosen for his life.
    One of my faves.
