    Shot you a follow ^

Stopped at my builders house last night. He’s gunna do a acid wrapped conventional for me to use on my kayak. Should be sick.

In other news, apparently stripers are already migrating because of the mild winter. My **** is all unorganized so I have to get that fixed ASAP.

Gonna try surf fishing on Saturday. Haven't been in a while. All my old spots are nearly impossible to get to since the hurricane. I'm honestly only hoping to get a few whiting to have a little fish fry. But a pompano would be nice.

Sunday, I'm going offshore provided the weather and waves are okay. Hoping for some trigger fish or even just some vermillion snapper.

Got 22 perch on Monday. Could've easily gotten my limit (25), but got plenty for a bunch of meals now. Done ice fishing for the season, which is sad.

Losing a fish and not getting anything is worse than getting skunked without any bites. If you miss a few but you still catch some, it isn't bad, but man, missing the only one on that you had all day is the worst

You guys in lock down or something? Fishing is the ultimate social distancing.

Sunday went surf fishing for a couple of hours before they told us to leave the beach since Florida closed all it's beaches because of idiot spring breakers. I thought that the base beach would remain open since it's federal land. I was wrong. They came at the worst time. The bite was on fire. Got a decent haul first. Buddy caught himself a bonnet head shark. Found out yesterday that the beaches on base will not be closed after all.

Went out on the yak yesterday. Braved some really choppy inshore waters to get to a quiet bayou. The trip was worth it because of this guy. My PB spotted sea trout. Came in at 21".

Just stocking up on groceries guys.

Mirin surf fishing hard. Fishing is open here, went trout fishing Sunday and caught one. Did a ton of exploring, water was pretty high so it was hard, but didn't care.

Other fish are still out deep until water warms up a bit. Feels bad man

I posted this in another thread a couple days ago, I forgot about this thread

I got out to the local trout stream over the weekend. Caught about 7 or 8, all about this size nothing to brag about. Water was a bit high and cloudy making it difficult to wade, so I took my time and explored some new spots. Mainly threw streamers and drifted san juan worms on the fly rod, and size #0 and size #1 Mepps white/silver spinners. Was so nice to get out with no time limits, no reason or obligations to race home for, nothing on the schedule.

Sitting on a log enjoying pizza by myself miles from humanity, I didnt even have to use my AK, I gotta say it was a good day.

We have a permit to fish in a private lake. It’s about 140 acres in size and is open April-October. There’s a ton of small bass so they want us to keep everything 16” and under. I took my 2 boys Saturday and we caught all these on a wacky rig:

Although I can't get out and fish during this lockdown, there is a bright side... I have to spare time to indulge my second hobby which is making split cane fishing rods (that's fishing poles to most of you lot). I thought you might like to see the process from start to finish with a brief overview of what is happening.

This build will be a 10ft 2 piece rod based on a design from the 50's by a well known Brit angler of the day - it was subsequently picked up by a commercial manufacturer who tweaked the tip section to lighten the action. I will be making 2 tip sections - one to the original design and one to the modified lighter design.

So it all begins with a culm of cane - this one is 6ft long and about 2 inches across. At the moment it's kind of pale and pasty looking... I fancy making a rod that is a dark tan colour - we'll fix that next.

Out with the blow torch and scorch the outer surface of the cane - it's not as destructive as it looks because the heat is intense but fast moving - you can see some of the moisture bubbling out of the ends during the flaming treatment.

The end result is a culm that now looks like this...

The next job is to begin splitting the cane into smaller sections - it's a tricky business because the cane has its own ideas about where it would prefer to split. My aim is to control the split and create even straight sections.
Firstly, I split it into halves - you can see the ridges on the outside coincide with the diaphragms on the inside - these strengthen the bamboo walls in the plant (it's a kind of grass if you didn't know) and are called nodes. These diaphragms need to be knocked out with a hammer - you can see I've done one half here and left the other to show you how they look.

Once all the internal diaphragms have been knocked out I use a rasp to remove as much of the remaining ridges as possible - this makes the next stage much easier - the next job is to continue to break the culm down into thinner strips... we will make 1/4's next.

Each hexagonal section of rod is made up from 6 strips of split cane that are planed into 60° triangular strips and fitted together keeping the outer surface of the cane on the outside of the finished section. That means that I need to split out 18 strips plus a couple of spares in case of cock ups. Each strip needs to be as straight as I can keep it and wide enough to be able to plane the finished strip dimensions out of. Removing those inner diaphragms will help to make this easier but it's a careful job and could all go wrong here very quickly...
Fortunately it went well and I got all the strips I needed at the right dimensions.

Next, the outer ridge at the node needs to be carefully sanded away and a hollow created behind the node on the inner surface - each node will be heated over a hot air gun which makes the cane soft and it is then squeezed in a vice to flatten out the fibres (you can see in the untreated strip the fibres become very wavy and random through the node). This will make planing them easier and less prone to tearing out. It also helps to makes sure the strips sit in the planing form properly and end up at the right dimensions - I'm aiming to be accurate to a couple of thou.

The next job is to plane an approximate 60° angle onto the strips - but with no taper at this stage, just a uniform thickness along the entire strip. Once that is done I have to arrange the strips so that there are no adjacent nodes - these are a weak spot so need spreading out... I am using a 3's pattern that places them in clusters of 3, I color code the ends of the strips to make sure I get this right later in the build. These rough strips are bound tightly with a strong linen thread and placed into my cane oven. It sounds grand but it's very basic - just a tube inside another tube with caps on the ends. I run the blowtorch along it and it heats the cane inside it. The cane goes soft and because it's bound together it straightens the strips out. Also, there is a chemical change in the lignin (the "cement" that binds the cellulose fibres in the plant together) which eliminates most of the moisture, "sets" the lignin and makes the cane harder and more springy.
Here you can see steam evaporating from the oven as I bake a section.

Here are the baked sections - so far we have made 3 sticks, each made of 6 un-tapered triangular sections. The next job is to set up the final planing form to the desired taper and plane the strips so that they taper from one end to the other as this is what creates the action of the rod.

It has taken me 3 days to get to this point so far - and there are quite a few hours work left ahead of me yet. I am going over the math involved in the tapers at the moment making sure I get them right before I start planing any strips to size. As the old maxim goes - measure twice... cut once.

I will update the thread with progress once I get the final planing underway and show what's involved there.
