Got out for opening day of early catch and release trout season. Went to a spot I wanted to explore over the summer, but the weeds were too high. Spot is okay, nothing special. Had a nice one, but it got off (was using barbless hooks). I think the spot would be better with higher water, but there's better spots nearby.

Lobstering on San Diego bay yesterday. I fabbed up a power winch for my davit to pull lobster nets. Take a lot of the work out of it

Got out for about an hour yesterday and caught this chunky guy. I'm pretty sure it's a Warmouth. Felt like a monster on my new 5' light action rod. He was about 7-8" and chunky.
It was the 2nd fish of 2020. First one was a tiny LMB caught in the lake behind my house."Milk is for babies. When you grow up you have to drink beer." - Arnold

Ill have you know I have been out every weekend this year, and 3 days in a row over the holidays.
been catching a lot of bat rays while fishing for halibut and i think ive figured it out.
So the rig I normally run is a sinker slider 4oz tor**** with a 3' leader and a 3/0-5/0 circle hook with a smelt/sardine/mackerel p much what ever bait I make. I've been getting a ton of hits and when i pull my bait up i can see the halibut teeth marks (very distinctive, fang like punctures). So my theory is that the rod holders that are embedded into my hull (fishing on a kayak) hold the rod too verticle, and because im in a kayak i leave the drag on a bit rather than just the clicker, or else it will snag in kelp and go off from the wind blowing me around.
So my theory is that because the rod is vertical and halibut are a flat fish that live on the bottom, the fish will try and take the bait and in doing so must bend the rod (20-40# 7') and pull drag before he can take the entire fish, therefore pulling the fish away from the halibut as it tried to get the entire fish in. Rays on the other hand are absolute muscle heads and probably dont even feel the drag and rob bending, they just hit the bait and the reel starts screaming, by the time i engage the reel its already eaten the bait and the circle hook does its job.
I am going to experiment with a horizontal rod holder on the gunwale and see how it works out.
Anyways here are a couple of pics:
this guy was about 30" from tip of wing to tip of wing. no clue the weight but it was pretty heavy to pick him out of the water by his spiracles and his tail was probably about 3'-4' long. I was afraid he was going to break my 17# Fluoro leader

how do you like that? i flipped my lexa for an avet so i dont have any baitcasters right now, considering picking one of these up.
nice, I will have to check one out. I need a 12' surf rod (using 10' right now) and telescoping would be sweet.

Any particular reason you aren’t holding the rod? I always hold while bottom fishing.

Made it out ice fishing again. Caught a bunch, kept 17, all on my hand-painted jig. More fun to catch them on something you made yourself.
On a down note, one of my containers of bait was open and it tipped over inside my fishing bag, so I lost 50 spikes. Good thing I have like 400 more.

some anglers will keep a "life list" which is essentially a life long list of which fish they catch. They will keep the name of the fish (common and scientific), as well as a photo of them with the fish, the date they caught it, where they caught, etc. its your list so you can include what ever parameters you want. Think of it as pokemon for fishermen lol. some guys have caught hundreds and thousands of species. alot of the anglers will also make a stipulation that they must catch the fish via hook and line, and it must be hooked by the mouth etc. Its a cool concept imo, especially if you frequent fisheries with tons of different fish species (i.e. the ocean)

yea they are really strong. I have been stung while trying to unhook a brown ray. little one I caught in the surf while looking for perch. Worst part is I knew to look for the stinger I just didn't anticipate how slippery the little guy was going to be, and because he was to small to grab by the spiracles I was handling it like a damned sandwhich is that makes sense.

Been hitting a new lake by me. Mostly only got dinks. The better fish were out deeper, but there was about 4" of snow on the ice which makes walking on it pretty hard. Finally, on Sunday, a lot of the snow had melted and I was able to walk out about 3/4 a mile. Fished in 65 feet of water and missed a bunch. But did land one. Once I switched to minnows I had a lot more action. I know what to do now, but of course, we are getting 6" of snow today so I will need to wait until it's gone before I go back. I am going again on Friday, but if the snow is still there I will probably just fish a bay somewhere instead of going out deep. Wish I had a 4 wheeler!

Probably second last time I will make it out ice fishing this season. Got 10 perch. Was pretty slow overall, but was over a school and got 4 in about 10 minutes which was super fun. They bite super light

I'm really bad about posting pics ITT but if you want to follow my IG, it's domkizzle. It's not a fishing specific IG but about 80% of my posts are fishing related.
