Okay, so I know there have been a lot of posts on here lately by people who have seen the light and started doing squats frequently, but they could never get as much love as they deserve, so here's my story.....I'll make it short.
Been struggling with patellar tendonitis for the last year or so....been rehabbing it for the last 6 months by foam rolling, icing, stretching frequently, etc.....but it continues to hurt like hell. I even stop squatting or only squat once every week or two to "limit the stress I put on my patellar tendon".
I say fuk it...i'm gonna deal with it and squat 3 mother effin times a week. I've only been doing this for 2 weeks. Knees/legs feel healthy as they have ever felt and the only variable that changed is SQUATTING. I still ice, foam roll, and stretch a lot.
DA FUQ?/10
Even got back on the bball court for the first time in a while yesterday, since i've been avoiding it to rehab my knees....I think I might have almost hit my head on the rim a couple times...could jump out da dam gym.
ONLY 2 WEEKS! IDK if it was just perfect timing that I started doing squats as my knees were starting to get a lot better anyway, but naw...I think it's just the squats.

I hate squats. i'm just going to say it.
If I didn't work out entirely at home in my powercage I'd probably never do them, and do leg press instead. As it is I'm doing them three times a week and still making great leg progress.
Besides everyone knows you can substitute squat for leg press, leg curls and a good game of basketball.

Had far less lower back dramas since I started squatting regularly and even better since I started 2 times a week (upped it to 3 times a week from this week).
I doubt leg presses are anywhere as good for overall leg strength, I did them for years but I never got the results I've been getting from squats already.
Looking forward to seeing what JasonDB etc have to say about this.Last edited by mattypoole; 03-14-2012 at 04:41 PM. Reason: illiterati..

bro come on. Read section three
http://scoobysworkshop.com/squat-myths/
And btw in case anyone can't tell I am joking. Obviously leg press, leg curl and game of basketball is a ridiculous replacement for squat.
But no i'm not joking about hating them. Long femurs to torso ratio (combined with probable bad form aand a weak posterior chain lol) makes my lower back always fail far before legs. I greatly prefer Deadlift.

Have checked them out a while ago.
Talks a lot of brotastic training and nutrition, but some of the comments are major lulz
There was one where the background he superimposed into his vid had a balloon landing sounds and all.....ppl were commenting on the background more than the topic matter in the vid, so he cracked it and disabled comments! You'll have to speak up, I'm wearing a towel.

There's a guy at my gym, I swear.....that loads the squat bar up to 405 pounds and literally slightly bends his knees...not even enough to know that he's even trying to do a squat.....and actually tells people he squats 405 for x amount of reps. I feel embarrassed for him every time he does it!

Normal reaction to squats... done correctly they strengthen, and rehabilitate injured, connective tissue, improve mobility and power in the entire body, and induce hypertrophy in many muscle groups outside of the thighs.... the power, balance and stability improvements carry over into everything from martial arts, to soccor even to taking a hit in a football game. High frequency squating isn't optional for anyone with serious athletic endevours.
As to the argument of leg press vs squat people are arguing against two completely unrelated things. If quad hypertrophy is the only goal neither lift is king of direct quad overload... front squats and hack squats are both superior for this... but the question becomes do you really need more than squats, and a few front squats, for your personal quad goals? Squats go beyond just quad hypertrophy.
The things I have said, and what has been said in this thread, isn't anything new or revolutionary, other than in the retarded post-Weider bodybuilding world where things like "The Joe Weider Muscle Confusion Principle" are taken seriously.... it has been known for decades in virtually every sport.

"Eccentric training could be the primary treatment for patients with patellar tendinopathy, either on a decline board or with heavy eccentric resistance." -from a study on pubmed
WTF...how come, out of all the people i've ever discussed my patellar tendonitis with....nobody has mentioned this. It makes complete sense now that I think about it. I just think it's crazy that i've tried just about everything to get over this overuse injury and nothing has worked....but in only 2 weeks of squatting 3 times per week, my tendonitis has improved this much.
During an internship I did, a powerlifting coach even had one of his lifters sitting out on squat day for weeks because of patellar tendonitis....when in fact, maybe he should have been squatting even more? Sorry, I know nothing in this thread is revolutionary, i'm just having an ah-hah moment.Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks, and Texas Rangers fan FOR LIFE!
