    Exertion headache? Halp!!

So on Tuesday I was going for a PR on leg press and I held my breath on the last rep like an idiot. I got the weight up but once I racked it I got a horrible headache in the back of my head. I did search the forums and found that its most likely an exertion headache. I tried to lift today as I had no signs of a headache but my head started to hurt during any exertion. What is the best course of action? Really need some help here. Every suggestion is appreciated.

    Leg press PR lol.

Sorry can't help the question, I used to get them a lot but not so much any more. Think once you get rid of the weakest capillaries via pressure burst it happens less.

Its your body telling you to quit being a p***y in the gym man up and squat.

    But seriously, leg press?

Srs: just take it easy and monitor. Breathing is very important and often times people pass out from lack of oxygen during a heavy lift. I used to get and still do from time to time headaches from lifting heavy, but this has gone down 100 fold overtime.

I said nothing about not squatting. I stand firm on my lol though, as my leg press "PR" is like 3x my squat.

I used to get the same thing during sex. SRS.
It happened every time across about a 2 week span and then stopped happening.
From what I read that it is just a random occurance and will go away with time.

The technical term is coital cephalalgia. It's common for sexual activity, but it can happen during exercise too.

FWIW, I notice I get the feeling when I consume too much sodium within a few days. I had an attack this week, looked at my log and saw I was getting 6-7.5 g of sodium while barely getting in 15 glasses of water on those days, all the while sweating profusely during lifting. It's been very warm lately.

The reason they're the same is upon orgasm a person will hold their breath without realizing they've done so and once regular rhythm is established, the headache will set in and will last for any number of seconds. Breathing is suspended and blood pressure increases significantly during orgasm. It's the same in lifting, breathing is suspended to maintain spinal composure and blood pressure spikes because of the force that's generated by muscle contractions, resulting in increased blood flow and pressure to the arterial walls.

Nothing wrong with that IMO. I hold my breath during all my lifts. Who breaths while lifting heavy weight unless they are yelling and making the scream face? AmIdoingItWrong?

Depends on the lift - certain ones I have a very natural breath cadence on. Squats on the other hand...

That's true. I forgot there are probably a lot of people who do a lot of bicep work and I could see breathing in that case. But not for bench, deads, rows and squats.
