The reverse is also true. When people think that if they vote in so-and-so, that he will fix all their problems.. Or when the candidates themselves think they can or will fix some problem that they don't even have the authority or jurisdiction to fix. Didn't Newt promise to lower gas prices to $2.50? Really?

They laughed at me last year in the Netherlands when I was complaining about $3.50 a gallon. It was about $14 a gallon there they said.

Oil companies make around a penny per gallon of gas. Their profit is in volume not margin. I would bet that a UK vehicle does not average 15,000 miles a year.

Gas STATIONS make about a penny per gallon. Oil Companies make more than that. I saw a break down on the news of every $50 at the pump. Something like $30 was the price of the crude, then like $8 for the oil company. The rest was spread out between middle men and transportation. The station ends up making $1 on every $50 spent at the pump. As you can see, the biggest contributors to the price of gas are 1. Crude prices and 2. Oil company profit motives. 1 is the one that is the real problem. A few people with lots of money that aren't really effected by gas prices speculate and play games with the price of gas/crude.

2 cents per gallon. 5% of what taxes cost us per gallon. Gas is expensive because it costs a lot to manufacture ($55 to pull a barrel of crude out of the ground, for example) and a lot of speculation.

That's an interesting article. I'm just not connecting the dots on costs the oil company $55/barrel to produce. Selling at $106/barrel currently to going to 0.02 cents/gal of gasoline. I know there is transport and refinery costs and taxes, but seems like there is a big cash shortage in there somewhere.

Gas is not the only output of a barrel of oil. You get tar, engine oil, diesel / heating fuel, jet fuel / kerosene, and gas from it (so there's variance in profit loading there too). Then you get by-products that you can't do crap with. Refining costs a sht load of money and not for just the obvious reasons. I have an uncle who is an airplane mechanic and has had this discussion with some refinery people that fly into their airport. One guy mentioned they have to produce something like 40 different mixtures depending on the state it ships to based on their emission standards. So if you want to really cut down on the cost of gas, produce a mix of 88 and 91 and be done with it, as well as cut the taxes on it considerably.
