Gay for pay is as prevalent in the bodybuilding community as protein powder. I get a lot of questions about how prominent being propositioned for acts up to and including sex are. Frankly, there are a lot of rumors and stories that float around the industry and I've heard my fair share. What many people don't realize is that it fairly prevalent and, in addition to that, the requests are a lot weirder than you would care to know. Ever see something you can't "unsee"? A lot of those requests I've heard are requests I can't "unhear". Further, the staggering amounts of money that are offered to do some of this stuff makes it hard for a lot of amateur guys to say no, especially when they aren't making much money. This is an expensive sport, even if you're natural. Paying for food, drugs, supplements, tanning and everything else it takes to be a bodybuilder can be very expensive. The easy way out can be very attractive, even if you have to do something very unattractive for it. On occasion, a video will pop-up on the internet that showcases a bodybuilder doing something strange and they get a new nickname. I'd like to preface this article with the fact that I do not have any animosity or hate towards gay people. There is a lot of gay for pay, or whatever you want to call it, going on underneath the surface of bodybuilding. For some reason, this stuff is kept hush-hush – like it isn't happening.

Early in my career, I decided that if I ever needed to do anything shady to pay for growth hormone or any other drugs, I would call it a day and find a new calling in life. I was lucky, where most are not, and I had the support of my family, great genetics, didn't spend that much on anabolics and trained my ass off. I was even so fortunate that once I had won the Nationals, I secured a contract; something that was unheard of at that time. Going forward, I will not discuss what others have told me, mention names or anything of the like. However, I can discuss what offers have been made to me over the years with the intent of displaying what kind of people are out there. Some of it is funny, some of it is disturbing, and some of it is still being propositioned to me to this day.

I was 23 years old with aspirations of being a famous bodybuilder; the phone rang, I picked it up. Here is a summary of the conversation, to the best of my recollection:

Kovacs: Hello?

Businessman: Hi, this is Bruce Schmidt (fake made up name). Is this Greg Kovacs?

Kovacs: Yes, what can I do for you?

Businessman: I love your look and I think it would be great for my supplement company. Right now, we are looking for an athlete that can represent us in a way that will promote our products nationally and is willing to travel to do so. There is a lot of buzz around you and we think that you would be a good fit for us.

Kovacs: Wow, all right, well what is your company selling, what do you guys do?

Businessman: Well we're in the supplement market but I can't get into too much of the specifics right now but I can tell you that we have sponsored many pro and amateur bodybuilders in the past. Let me ask you some basic questions to start?

Kovacs: All right?

Businessman: I need to know your vitals, how big do your arms, chest, thighs and waist measure?

Kovacs: Well, they change a lot, so I couldn't give you exact numbers right now without taping them. I don't really measure them that much. I can get back to you with pumped and cold numbers. If that's okay?

Businessman: Yeah, that's fine. Can you send me pictures too?

Kovacs: I guess I could, yeah.

Businessman: Don't get squeamish with this next question, I need to know because we are trying to break into the sex market too. How big is your cock? What does it measure?

Kovacs: HAHAHAHA! You're joking right?

Businessman: No, I'm serious, how big is your dick?

Kovacs: Seriously?

Businessman: Seriously.

****It was at this point I realized that this was not a joke and what was really going on, I decided to **** with him a bit****

Kovacs: All right, well if you really want to know, I am not a little guy - anywhere. I'm right around 10 inches.

Businessman: Would you be willing to fly out to New York once a month for promotional work?

Kovacs: Yeah, sure, as long as your company flies me out there.

Businessman: Of course, Greg. We don't want to put you under any undue financial stress. So, in New York we have our board that kind of approves of our athletes. These guys are wealthy homosexuals and they will be footing the bill to have you there and signing your cheques. They will want to have a private interview with you to make sure that you will be a good fit for us.

Kovacs: Mm-hmm.

Businessman: Over the years, many amateur and pro bodybuilders have come and been through our interview process. They wound up with a nice bank roll and a contract. You may have to come to New York monthly and go through our interview process; what would you be willing to do for the board?

Kovacs: Like what? What are you hinting at?

Businessman: Well, what would you do for us, what are your limits?

Kovacs: I'm sorry this sounds like you're interested in something other than bodybuilding. Or maybe, that you are too interested in bodybuilding. I'm not interested, goodbye.

This one phone call really disappointed me and it opened my eyes to the dark side of the sport. It was a rude awakening to something that I naively thought was so pure. I decided shortly thereafter that if I did not turn pro and start earning money from bodybuilding in the next few years, I would pursue something else. There was no way that I was going to get involved in anything like what that guy wanted.

After that initial call, I never got another. I have a theory that it was a network of wealthy homosexuals that left me alone once they saw that I was not interested. Sadly, that was not the only strange request I had received over the years. Here is a list of some of them:

 Bear hug them until they lose consciousness.

 Lift a fridge, naked, at their home.

 Blowing up balloons on webcam, naked.

 Send them my dirty underwear, socks and other freshly worn clothing items.

 Send them a pair of freshly worn posing trunks.

 A video tape of me going to the washroom. Not number one, number two.

 Private posing session.

Honestly, I received a lot of these requests more than once. For example, the request for a private posing session happened all the time. You don't even want to know about the amount of money I had been offered to do a lot of this stuff. It was a lot.

I want to leave you all with this parting message, especially you younger, up and coming bodybuilders out there. We all have choices to make when we are pursuing a dream and have decisions to make along the way. To those of you who have or would accept these offers I say, to each their own and I am no one to judge. Just be sure you really think about it first before you make any rash decisions. Make sure that you can live with your choices and that you won't be chased by your memories of what you have done. We are all different and hold different convictions. Some people are okay with sending people their dirty underwear because "if they are stupid enough to pay for it, why not". Always remember that the people want to take advantage of your position and want to convince you to do something that you may not be willing to do normally. Just remember, the decisions you make, you will have to live with. A life filled with regret and shame is not worth any amount of money.

Infact I have experienced some of what Kovacs is talking about and I could have been the one hitting the poses, a mate was doing door to door sales as a backpacker here in sydney, a random guy questioned him on the street and said he was a photographer and needed under wear models, my mate being a bit niave did not know the guy was looking for a show/weirdo and had no intentions of paying for real modelling, anyway my mate had not worked out what was going on, the so called photographer asked if he had any friends and my mate said about me and said I had more muscle, so the guy called my mate later and asked to speak to me, he was asking about arm sizes and measurments, it was clear what this was, my mate said dont tell his wife.
