copypasta from my journal:
what do you think happens when a cinema complex, housing 14 cinemas, all with digital projectors, has a power outage?
they have a backup generator. so what happens is not sudden silence and pitch blackness. what happens is this: the digital projection system, which manages all 14 cinemas, and the admin systems for the cinema staff, and the 2 way radio system that the staff uses to communicate, crashes. this means the only way the staff can communicate with us and with each other is by running around a 14 cinema complex and shouting.
we got this on our screen, for about 15 minutes:
they gave out free movie tickets at the end of the movie, to every patron who saw a movie in any of the 14 cinemas tonight.
cinemas make zero money off tickets. the reason all the candy bar items and 3d movies and what have you are priced so ludicrously is so that the cinema does make a profit from something. the ticket price you pay at the box office goes to the distributors and filmmakers, and the cinema makes nothing. there is more to it than that, to do with how long a film runs at the cinema and what have you, but that's the simplified version. cinemas hate giving away free tickets, because instead of making no money for each ticket, they are essentially paying film distributors for every free ticket they give away. they make no money from the original ticket, and then they pay the distributor again for the free movie the patron ends up going to. i can only imagine how much money the cinema lost tonight. someone is going to be in a lot of trouble tomorrow.
incidentally, the expiry dates on the free tickets we got tonight were hand-written. someone sat down and scribbled on each ticket and then they gave them to us on the way out. this person must have been in a hurry, because instead of expiring in 1 year, my ticket expires in 19 years. (dd-mm-yy) should have been expiry of 31-01-13, instead, mine expires 31-01-31. i am very very very tempted to hang onto it and to redeem it in 19 years time. provided this cinema chain does not go out of business before then. which they may well do if they continue to make this sort of mistake.

Black Hole Offense... once he touches the ball, it's almost a guarantee that no one else will. Because why pass the ball and look for easy buckets when an off-balance 19fter is the way to go!
I would like Young in a 6th man, Jason Terry-type of role where he comes in with the second unit to provide instant offense. If he's feeling it, keep feeding him the ball, otherwise take him out. As a starter he just jacks up way too many contested shots, and yeah sometimes he catches fire and it looks good, but more often than not it just ends up resulting in terrible offensive possessions. Besides, he can't play D and offers basically nothing else statistically. Do you know his career high in assists is four. Four! That's turrrible.Return of the Mack?

In other news, some fukstick scammed my checkcard and used it to make $500 worth of fraudulent purchases. Awesome.

Maybe, but again, look at the current roster (Ernie should get the axe for this, btw.) Someone has to score, and someone has to take the shots. No one else consistently can fill it up. It's sad, but it's true. If there were other scoring options, maybe it would be a different story. For now that's just a hypothetical. His FG % is down this year, but if he could get back to around 45 percent like last year, that's pretty solid.

Sucks man. I can sympathize. Someone got into my xbox account like a month ago or so and rung up a few hundred worth of charges. Fortunately I happened to catch it the day of (just happened to check my recent activity) and Chase handled it quickly.
anything majorly bad coming out of the scam or just the hassle of getting a new card, etc?-

This I definitely agree with. Just not enough talent on this team to be truely competitive.
Doesn't look like anything too bad. Luckily I check my account online often and noticed last night that the BS purchases were made yesterday. I will get my money refunded and a new card is already in the mail...it's just the unsettling feeling of it actually happening in the first place and wondering where/how it happened, ya know? Yeah that's really the worst thing that has come out of this. I've been good with implementing necessary measures to protect myself from cyber crimes. But even then, these criminals are getting more advanced at being able to scan the info off your card without you even knowing it. Also, who knows it could have simply been the bartender who took down my card # when I was paying my tab and then used it a week later, hoping I wouldn't happen to notice.
I should probably start using cash more often, but then again I don't totally feel comfortable carrying around a large bankroll either.Return of the Mack?

Driving in to work, I heard an employment ad for the CIA. Apparently, you too can work in clandestine operations, translation, decryption, computer science, or other jobs with our country's Central Intelligence Agency. Keep America safe!
"I'm here to interview for Clandestine Operations."
"Okay, what's your name?"
"Sorry, I can't tell you that. Do I get my Aston Martin now?"☠ By reading this post, you have agreed to my negative reputation terms of service.

When it happened to me the people at my bank said it was very unlikely that the people actually got my number from my card. She said they guess until they find one that works.
Blunt go back up to 3 months and look for $1 charges. Those are the testers. If they go through they know they have a good one then they'll sit on it (possibly sell it) for a couple of months before it gets used.

My mom sent me an email the other day with this (about a new way they can steal your credit info):
I was watching the news this morning and they were talking about a new way to get someones credit card information without that person knowing it.
The newer cards have the ability to always emit the info on the card. It makes it easier to get things like gas or stuff by just waving the card by the sensor. Well this also makes it easy to steal the info with an I-pad or a phone.
The I-pad way is a more known about system. The phone is a newer system. The person getting the info does not even have to be near the person [you].
You may even giving it yourself, and you could be giving your friends also
You would down load an app....like a game or such, You can even play this game. But its got a "virus" that picks up these "radio" signals and sends it to an e-mail where its downloaded, and then used or sold.
CHECK your cards on the back. Look for something that looks like this....)))).
If you have a card or cards with this on them, either contact the credit card co. and trade them in for the older type cards or get one of those metal wallets to store the cards in. This signal can be picked up by anyone whether they know they are doing it or not.
The symbol is this:
Turns out I have one card with that capability (it is also my oldest one, oddly enough). The icon was on the back. I have some metal sleeves that the Id card office gave me for the gov't id card which has a chip that can broadcast, so I'm using that for the card.
How did you end up with that??-

i have no idea. there have been a couple of instances where i received a letter from a company stating that their databases were stolen, with no description of who the culprit was or any real useful information. all you get is an apology and a free subscription to a credit security company. it is possible that something happened with my personal information from one of those incidents. i tried to dispute it initially with chase. things were going really well it seemed. they said on the phone that they could see that the application and charges were all out of state, i think in MN. then they got my information from me so they could contact me, entered it in to their system, but they cleared the old address out. next time i call to check the status of what is going on, it has all of my proper contact information in the system and there are not any notes of my prior call. this is the kind of thing that makes me hate customer service in general. now i am not sure what i am going to do, but i know i will never pay for it.

Yeah I went back and reviewed my transactions (it's something I tend to do on the regular anyway, especially if I use my card when a tip is involved to make sure nothing "extra" was added). Didn't see anything out of the ordinary.
I have this feeling it possibly could have been the seedy bartender chick that I opened a tab with last week. The couple purchases were made at ralphlauren.com. I figure that if someone uses your card number to make purchases online, they would need that 3-digit security code on the back of the card as well; so it wouldn't be a total shock that she might haven taken down this info while holding onto my card.
Above anything thankfully it was just my checkcard that got compromised and not my actual bank accounts, or they could have easily emptied out everything and that would have been a huge PITA to get cleared up.Return of the Mack?

I'll be rooting against Miami again.
Not sure yet who I like to come out of the West - Dallas losing Chandler and Barrea hurts them a lot, Clips may be too new, Lakers too old. I guess OKC.
If Howard leaves your namesake, I hope he goes to Chicago and they beat Miami every year until Lebron retires.Who was this love of yours?

They emptied my account but it was all recovered by my bank.
Ironically, the $1 tester charges that I found were signing up for credit checks on a couple of sites.
The silver lining to the whole thing was that I had a few recurring accounts that I had been meaning to cancel and hadn't gotten around to it. So when that card number was cancelled it was taken care of.

I really like OKC, but something tells me they're still one year away. I could see them falling short against Miami (ugh) just because Durant and Westbrook are still relatively inexperienced (almost like how MJ had to take his lumps against the Bad Boys before finally breaking through). Having those two guys at the top locked up for the next 5 seasons, however, along with the complementary pieces they've put in place is going to result in great things. If Durant can gain 15lbs he may end up being unstoppable.
