I don't even know where to start.
The seat is the biggest deal to me - whenever I have ridden (it's been mostly mountain bikes) it's destroyed my groinal area...like destroyed, I can't sit down at all lol.
For those that road bike - what can I get (preferably used) for ~700

dude!
don't get a bicycle! get a unicycle!! i am 100% serious by the way. I love to ride my unicycle, it is fun, a great core workout, leg workout, and conversation starter!
but if you want to get a decent used bike check out craigslist, or even some bike/triathlon shops will carry used road bikes!just your average unicyclist, juggling, trombone playing weightlifter.......

Saddle choice is very important. I think Untz (where has that guy been anyway) is probably most qualified to answer your questions. But from my personal experience, for a saddle, I've been most comfortable on a narrow saddle with a slot cut out of the middle. Leather covering a gel inner.

Check out BikesDirect.com for low prices. Stuff comes out of the same factories of name brand but without the price.

I personally prefer Giant and Norco but neither come with good seats. You'll pretty much have to replace the seat on any bike you purchase but Giant is my brand of choice for mountain bikes. I pretty much can't live without any form of shocks.
“Go back?" he thought. "No good at all! Go sideways? Impossible! Go forward? Only thing to do! On we go!" So up he got, and trotted along with his little sword held in front of him and one hand feeling the wall, and his heart all of a patter and a pitter.”

Look on nashbar for parts. For whole bicycles see if you have a local bike collective - they usually will put together good cycles for a reasonable donation.
If you need a saddle find an old brooks b12. srs.Clear eyes, full heart: can't lose.

i work at a bike shop called velo-city in alabama. "trek" bikes are beginner - intermediate bikes, the componets are not as nice as "specialized" & "cannondale". The price on that bike for $470 isnt that bad at all tbh. Our bikes START at $550 and they range all the way up to $12,000. Yes, twelve thousand dollars. with the average being around $700-$1000. cycling is an awesome way to get in cardio! i can ride for upwards of 3-4 hours if i wanted to, getting places and riding around makes the time go by fast! good luck

Check Craigslist before you do anything else! There are usually pretty good deals on lightly used bikes.
It's tough to say, "just get a <model>" because it all depends on what is in your area. It's not like buying a car where you can buy a Ford basically anywhere. It's totally dependent on what your local shops carry, or what other people are selling.

hmmmmmmm lots of options here. Why I hesitate in buying roadbike is because I live in Seattle....it rains. A lot. and F that. Mountain bike would be sweet though, especially in mudd.
