Not really the most experienced voice on this issue. But cutting out all snacks and crap helped me lose 5 lbs in a week before a meet and my strength didn't suffer at all. The two things you listed above are a recipe for disaster, just my opinion.

I think the better question is, what is your current weight? You have 179lbs listed so are you cutting to hit the 165lb class?
    Total's = Jan. 2012 - 1036 @ 198's
    Jan. 2013 - 1184 @ 220's
    Jul. 2013 - 1251 @ 220's

    disregard profile stats
would love to go in 165 but that seems foolish. my weight seems to fluctuate and hover around 181-184
i just want to make sure for certain that i will make the 181 class

to water load: 3 gallons on monday, 2.5 on tuesday, 2 on wednesday, 1 on thursday, cut food noonish on thursday, cut your water at 7pm thursday, for a 3pm weigh in on friday. ('bout 20 hours before the weigh in you cut the water)

***do this only if trying to drop large percentage of your bodyweight***
dehydrate with a sauna or hot shower, do 15 minute sessions in the heat, then 5 minutes out, make sure you occasionally rinse off to get the salt and stuff off your skin so you can keep sweating.
***do this only if trying to drop large percentage of your bodyweight***

make weight, then rehydrate aggressively, i do 1 gallon in the first 30 minutes after making weight, 1/2 water 1/2 gatorade.

then salty foods and more liquids until you get all bloated.

you can yo-yo about 7-10% of your bodyweight in water weight easy.

the key is to get back to your starting weight as soon as possible after you make weight.

In my experience, yes, provided that you get back to or over your pre-dehydration weight.

Bill, for the water loading, I've seen what your suggesting, but the order is reversed, with the 3 gallons being on Wednesday. Any reason for the difference?

In addition to Isaku's post, I would add immonium ad the night of rehydrating. You'll need it. If its just 5# or less, a 24 hour fluid restriction should do the trick. I've lost up to 20# prior to early weigh in's using that technique

I did a 14# weight loss qualify for that contest. I entered the lw class for masters nationals. I dropped out due to injury. I was looking forward to visiting Texas too.

Yeah I've seen it work both ways and I've used it both ways.

The 3 gallons on wednesday seems to be more of a flush, and a more rapid loss, but with less actual weight loss. When I've been close to my weight class limit I've done that where I drink 3 gallons the day before my cut and I'll drop 4-6 pounds without any other effort whatsoever.

The 3 gallons on Monday seems to drop more weight, but it takes longer, so if you need to drop more weight, I'd suggest more water early and then taper off.

Though I have seen equally good results with the same amount of water per day for each of the loading days.

The basic principle is you want to oversaturate your body, then completely cut salt, carbs and water and your weight will suck down as your body sheds water and minerals. Once weight is made you rehyrdate quickly and completely and you'll feel just fine.

I've dropped anywhere from 6 pounds - 22 pounds using this method and hit PRs at the meet.

you didn't do any loading did you? so your body went straight into "I'm in a desert and need to hold onto every ounce of water I have" mode.

the drinking of uncomfortable amounts of liquid for 4 days isn't for show...its to trick your body into thinking it needs to shed water to survive.

Herp derp matter cannot be created. You cannot magically gain weight, either your scale is ****ed up or you're lying about not eating/drinking
You can always be thinner, look better.
