Is it just personal preference? because I see people of the same weight class doing different styles of deadlifting
personally, I feel stronger when my feet are closer together. I'm trying to get the most out of my deadlifts, so should I start focusing on a wider stance?

Should you do deadlifts with a narrow or wide stance?

I used to DL with a really narrow stance, but have had some hip problems and have had to widen it slightly, still within shoulder width, but feet are now more straight forward and it doesn't give me knee pain anymore, and I engage my hamstrings a lot better.
Technique shoulder be something you are always trying to improve, it can result in slowing down progress since you get used to doing it a certain way and get good at it, then slightly modify things will set you back a bit., but in the long run it will pay off.
