Quite surprised at the amount of hate 1GGY is getting. He has a legit point yet people just call him names because they don't have much of an answer.
Lets be real, no bull****... If you're from Ohio you're going to 'support' the best university in state. Same thing whether your from Alabama or Texas.
Even if you have ZERO affiliation with with the university you support you'll still support them which is strange but understandable. I'll give people who live in states where there are no pro teams a free pass though, because in their eyes they're supporting the university that represents their state best.
The thing that makes me CRINGE the most is losers who went to a university but does not support them in sports and supports the biggest and most best university in the state instead. Its like dude, do you have any respect for the university you went to? If you take your college sports so seriously why didn't you just go to the university you support in college sports? That annoys me the most. Kind of find it sad and pathetic. Just look at how many Ohio State or Michigan University 'fans' there on here who didn't even attend either of those universities. Why aren't you supporting your alma mata? You spent thousands and thousands of dollars attending X university, why are you walking around in another university's football jersey?Last edited by Milo3; 10-27-2011 at 03:45 PM.

Thats fine, I wouldn't expect someone to go to a university based on successful the university's sports teams are - that'd be silly, I just don't understand why someone would support a university they didn't attend over their alma mata. I understand people taking pride in and cheering for the most successful university in your state, thats fine, we all want to see our local teams do well, but remember who your alma mata is and don't just disregard them just because they're not competing for national titles every year.

I understand both sides.
But most people don't grow up fans of smaller division 1 schools as kids.
Most people in Ohio grow up Ohio State fans. If they were a true fan of OSU, they wouldn't be able to override their feelings for a team they've pulled for their entire life because they ended up at Akron or Kent State.
I would much rather have a conversation with a person who was a true fan of OSU than a person who goes to OSU and missed the game because they had better things to do.

OP, serious question (serious)
Let's say someone was born in LA and has been a fan of the Trojans since birth. Watches all of the games, knows the players, etc. However they don't have the grades/can't afford USC's tuition so they must go to another school
Now let's take some rich snob who lives in NYC who has never seen a USC game and knows nothing about their program and was just rejected by NYU. This person has USC as their second choice because LA is basically the west coast NYC in their mind and they like that type of atmosphere. So this person decides to go to USC
Is person #2 automatically a "better fan" because they actually go to USC even though they have no interest in the team, athletics, etc?Lionized

So that's all fine and dandy OP, but what about those of us who either only ever attended a two year college or a D3 school or just never went to college at all?
I mean yeah I do get your point that it's odd seeing a guy who attends Florida State cheering the Long Horns, but how about my point?
Not everyone chooses their school for the sports teams. Maybe someone is a Tide fan for instance but attends Stanford because of the prestige of the school? Maybe someone wears the colors of the university of Florida while he sits in the classroom of texas A and M because their engineering program was too good to pass up.
And no I have never met anyone who was upset that I cheer the Iowa Hawkeyes for instance even though I never attended. NO ONE cares about **** like that and in no way ever feel degraded.

Yeah totally bro!
I've been an Illini fan since I was born because my dad is an alumni there and is a huge fan also. But since I go to Southern Illinois University for 4 years of my life I can't still be an Illini fan anymore. Those 4 years are much more important than the 23 I've spent following the Illini. I'm a fan of both so f*ck off.
I agree being a USC fan from Maine is stupid but to each their own. IMO it is also stupid to like different Universities for different sports. BRB I'm a Duke basketball fan and Alabama football fan from Seattle, Washington.I rep back 500+ every time.
