Yesterday I went back to the Hospital for Special Surgery and got an epidural injection in my back. Took about 15 minutes, was over before I knew it. The doctor said it may take a few days to kick in. But I'm feeling kinda good right now, the numbness in my left leg is gone, just feeling sore from the injections.
I brought the video of how I hurt my back to the doctor, thought he might appreciate it. He said only one other person ever brought him in video. When he came into the procedure room, he said he asked the other doctors,PAs, nurses etc, how much they thought I was lifting when I got hurt, the guessed around 300, he said when he said 670 they didnt believe him, then he showed them the video. So needless to say, that video became the big talk in the back there and was answering alot of questions as the wheeled me to the recovery room. LOL.
Then the nurses couldn't believe I was 37 and thought I was more like 31-32 though one thought 28.....NICE!! Good thing my dad came with me and not my wife! LOL!!Crom Laughs....
So, how long are you gonna keep powerlifting?

The doctor said this is EXACTLY what I need to fix this problem. His words actually were to fix this episode.
I didnt get the same type of epidoral that pregnant woman get. They get it just to get numb. This was to actually inject the steroids right into my spine around the discs, the get rid of the inflammation and may actually draw the discs back in a little. He did give me injections in my back first to numb it, then he gave me the big one.
I didnt have surgery. Nor plan to or need to. He said my discs are not bad at ALL, just mild herniations. He also said that he believes I had these herniations for quite some time(years).
Me too! I have been giving some thought as to what to do, but I think it will be a more progressive thing that will help make up my mind. But if I DO decide to try and compete again, it may be for a just one or MAYBE 2 shot deal.Crom Laughs....

I think you should respond well to the epidural, I have had at least 50 clients get them as an alternative to surgery and would say that the success rate is around 70-80%. Basically if your herniations are minimal then the nerve involvement (which is causing the pain and numbness) is likely a result of inflammation and/or spondylosis or stenosis (a narrowing of the spinal canal leaving the nerve roots more exposed). The epidural will (hopefully) both serve to reduce the inflammation and possibly restore better disc height and spacing and basically leave more margin for error (ie. it is harder for sweliing to "get to" the nerve). Did they schedule you for 3 or are they going to see how the first one goes and work from there? The good news is that it doesn't sound like the disc itself is causing the neuropathy in which case they would have to go in and clean it up. Good luck with it, sounds like the news has been very positive.

The doctor said I would only need this one. Never mentioned getting more. The problem was the L3 nerve. I'll see how I feel in the next few days. I'm feeling pretty good about it and I have alot of confidence in my doctor. He is one of the top guys in this field. So I know I'm in good hands.

He only mentioned the one, and I am feeling pretty good right now, but if I need more, no problem, went MUCH easier than I thought. No big deal. I am the first powerlifter to see him, but he deals with professional athletes all the time. So he understands where I am coming from and never once said I should stop squatting, or never squat again. Only that there is a risk there to do more damage, but that risk is there regardless just because of the nature of the lift itself. Just told me to wait at least a week, then start coming back slowly. I may wait a bit longer.

So far I'm doing ok. But my buddy gave me some bad news, he says that a belt is in my future......Crom Laughs....

Just don’t stand next to me then….lol
Don’t worry dude, I don’t care what anyone lifts, I just want to see them do it right. None in my crew makes fun of anyone for what they lift or can’t lift, I don’t allow it. We may bust balls, but we don’t make fun. Saturday will be about working on your form and getting you a bigger bench. Like I said before, benching is easy, sucks…but easy….
And besides….I highly doubt I’d be benching remotely heavy…..I have been doing Hammer Strength machines the last few weeks. But will just be easier to bench to help you.Crom Laughs....

Pretty much I guess, I honestly don't worry in the least about my deadlift. I have just been working on my grip. I believe I can pull 20-30 pounds more if I improve my grip, of course my training partner says I'd be pulling over 7 if I actually trained it. Yeah yeah....
I do have a "back" day. Couple reasons. First I don't deadlift, but even if I did I still would. I can't do any back work after bench. On bench day, by the time I finish everything, I've been in the gym for at least 2 hours, I wanna go the **** home. Plus I feel its important enough to warrant its own day and lastly I like having a wide back that I can sell advertising on.
But I actually don't do awhole lot. About 3 exercises. Like tonight(I'm still not training too heavy), I did about 6 sets of pulldowns, 4 sets of seated cable rows and 3 sets of dumbbell rows -100x12,120x12,140x12
* I usually do padded t-bars(chest supported rows), I always called that my bread and butter of my back routine. Strongly believe in those. I go as heavy as I can with them. Just laying off them right now.
I never mind answering questions. If you ask something I don't like, I just won't answer....lolCrom Laughs....
