Testosterone levels go off the scale with holy basil

    Saw this on ergo-log.com:

Holy basil, or Ocimum sanctum, is an herb that originally comes from India. In animal studies done at Sharma University of Health Sciences it sends testosterone levels so high that researchers can't measure them. And no, they weren't using high-tech extracts, but ordinary fresh leaves of the plant.

Holy basil goes by the name of tulsi in India. In Asia it is used for cooking and in Ayurvedic medicine. Ocimum sanctum contains among other things oleanolic acid, ursolic acid, rosmarinic acid, eugenol, carvacrol, linalool and beta-caryophyllene.

In Ayurvedic medicine Ocimum sanctum is ascribed adaptogenic properties, capable even of protecting against radioactive radiation [Indian J Exp Biol. 1995 Mar; 33(3): 205-8.], and life extending properties too. Text books refer to its medicinal use for treating colds, headache, stomach complaints, inflammations, cardiovascular disease [BMC Complement Altern Med. 2006 Feb 19; 6:3.], malaria and poisoning, for example through arsenic [Food Chem Toxicol. 2009 Feb; 47(2): 490-5.].

    Ocimum sanctum

The researchers' interest in Ocimum sanctum was piqued by a less well-known use: in some villages women use the herb as a contraceptive. The researchers decided to see if they could confirm this effect in animal studies, and gave male rabbits weighing 2 kg a daily 2 g of fresh leaves for 30 days.

The extract worked. The figure below shows that Ocimum sanctum reduced the concentration of sperm in the seminal fluid by 45 percent. Even stronger though was the effect on the testosterone level: this rose by no less than factor five in the rabbits who ate the leaves.

The equipment the researchers used to measure the concentration of testosterone in the blood of the lab animals was capable of measuring up to 1500 nanograms per decilitre. Ocimum sanctum caused the level of testosterone to rise above this cut-off point.

The FSH concentration went down by a factor five as a result of the herb, and the LH concentration even dropped of the bottom of the scale.

"A possible hypothesis to explain this pattern of changes in hormone levels could be that Ocimum sanctum leaves probably contain some androgenic analogue, which increased the circulating testosterone levels sufficiently to inhibit LH but not sufficient to accumulate in the testis at the required concentration for normal spermatogenesis", the researchers write. "However, the decreased LH levels will diminish intratesticular production of testosterone by Leydig cells, which results in reduced levels of spermatogenesis."

    Source:
    Int J Ayurveda Res. 2010 Oct–Dec; 1(4): 208–210.

Sounds like a lot for say a 150kg man, that would equate to 150gms per day, but I'm sure that smaller amounts would have a terrific benefit.

It's also interesting that Holy Basil is related to mint, so having easy access to mint might be just as beneficial.

So if we took holy basil then we'd benefit? Without our bodies stopping producing its own test.? Sounds good.

So, it will be 324mg/kg for humans.

So for a 150kg man it will be around 48 grams per day.

The next question would be, what does it taste like and the best way to take it?

    Human km=37(Adult)
    Rabbit km =12
    animal dose = 1000mg/kg
    HED= 1000*12/37= 324.32mg/kg

So a 80kg(176lbs) adult needs ~26g of leaves.

Apparently it makes our own testes produce off the scale testosterone, the research limit was 1500ng/dl and it was way over that.

I looked through the PUMED and this is what i saw:

Results of the present study clearly show that tulsi treatment (2 g/day) brings about a reduction in sperm count, which is in agreement with the earlier reports. Khanna et al, have reported significant decrease in sperm count and motility as well as decrease in the weight of testes, epididymis, seminal vesicle, and ventral prostate after long-term feeding of OS leaves.[14] The long-term feeding of fresh tulsi leaves (465 mg/kg/day) have shown to increase the body weight, while decrease the weights of testes, prostate, and adrenal gland in rats. The results suggested that infertility in male rats seems to be due to impairment of spermatogenesis as well as changes like decrease in pH, hypotonic environment, and chemical substances like mucoproteins, alkaline phosphatase and acid phosphatase in spermatogenic cells leading to formation of non-viable spermatozoa.[15] However, Seth et al, reported that benzene extract of OS leaves significantly altered the weight of testes but did not have any significant effect on epididymis, seminal vesicle, prostate, and vas deferens.[16] Treatment with OS leaves led to a highly significant increase in testosterone levels. FSH and LH levels also showed a significant decrease in the test group after tulsi treatment. A possible hypothesis to explain this pattern of changes in hormone levels could be that tulsi leaves probably contain some androgenic analogue, which increased the circulating testosterone levels sufficiently to inhibit LH but not sufficient to accumulate in the testis at the required concentration for normal spermatogenesis. However, the decreased LH levels will diminish intratesticular production of testosterone by Leydig cells, which results in reduced levels of spermatogenesis. For suppression of spermatogenesis, different androgens and progestins have been used either alone or in combination. Reddy and Rao administered testosterone propionate 100 mg daily intramuscularly to normal volunteers and achieved azoospermia in 100% subjects.[17] Weekly IM injections of 200 mg testosterone enanthate given to 399 normal healthy fertile males produced azoospermia or severe oligospermia (sperm density <3 million/ml) in more than 95% volunteers. This contraceptive effect was comparable to female contraceptive pills, and was reversible.[18]

So which is it, small balls or more testosterone, I don't think you can have both?

    This is interesting.

I don't think you would need onion juice although it might keep the testes producing testosterone but it looks like Holy Basil has an anabolic steroid as part of it.

There's nothing like being my own guinea pig, so I'm going to buy a kilo of it and see what effects it had on me.

I will start with 10gms a day, don't want to get too freaky too quickly.

since you going to do a little research on your self keep these factors in mind--

    1.
    Prolonged Bleeding
People who are already prescribed a blood-thinning medication, such as heparin or warfarin, by their physician should be aware that holy basil is a mild blood-thinner. The herb intensifies the blood-thinning properties of these prescription drugs and could lead to bruising or prolonged periods of bleeding. Anyone who has a blood-clotting disorder should consider this potentially serious side effect of holy basil before ingesting the herb.
    2.
    Low Blood-sugar Levels
One reason people choose to use holy basil is because it lowers glucose levels in the blood. Problems arise, however, when diabetics or hypoglycemics who are already taking medication to regulate or lower blood glucose levels supplement these medications with holy basil, which can significantly lower blood sugar levels even more. If blood glucose levels drop too radically, people with diabetes can experience dizziness, fainting and even shock, according to the Right Health website
    3.
    Interactions with Other Herbal Supplements
Because of the way holy basil is processed in the liver, the herb can interfere with the way other herbal supplements are absorbed in the body. Holy basil can intensify the effects of certain herbs or supplements, resulting in excessive levels of those herbs in the blood. Holy basil may interfere with the way the body processes certain herbs or supplements using the liver's "cytochrome P450" enzyme system. As a result, the levels of other herbs or supplements may become too high in the blood. It may also alter the effects that other herbs or supplements possibly have on the P450 system
Holy basil seems to be well tolerated in most people, and it has generally recognized as safe (GRAS) status in the United States, but i keep reading these same concerns with holy basil, these are with regular dosing (300-2,000 milligrams), you however will be MEGA dosing. are these concerns real? i dunno, just thought i would post them, maybe some one smarter than i can shed some light.

Wellness and Livestrong are not originators of information, so I'll, take those with a pinch of salt for the moment. I have read the information and will look out for shakes etc, because of blood glucose. However, I do know my body very well so I shall be taking a close feel of how things are progressing. In fact I sent Wellness an email last week as they (conveniently?) forgot to mention about the fact that rapeseed oil, canola oil is highly toxic to us because it is heated to 300F when being processed and therefore is rancid before being even bottled and full of free radicals.

I did a PUBMED search earlier but could not find anything about that area, although it was a quick search. I shall be searching more later.

    Hepatoprotective activity of Ocimum sanctum

Hepatoprotective activity of Ocimum sanctum alcoholic leaf extract against paracetamol-induced liver damage in Albino rats.

    Source

Department of Pharmacology, Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute, Pondicherry, India.
    Abstract
    BACKGROUND:

There is a lack of reliable hepatoprotective drugs in modern medicine to prevent and treat drug-induced liver damage. Leaves of Sacred/Holy Basil, i.e. Green Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), belonging to family Lamiaceae are used traditionally for their hepatoprotective effect. We wanted to evaluate the hepatoprotective activity of Ocimum sanctum and observe whether synergistic hepatoprotection exists with silymarin.
    MATERIALS AND METHODS:

Albino rats (150-200 g) were divided into five groups. Groups A and B were normal and experimental controls, respectively. Groups C, D and E received the alcoholic extract of Ocimum Sanctum leaves (OSE) 200 mg/kg BW/day, silymarin 100 mg/kg BW/day and OSE 100 mg/kg BW/day + silymarin 50 mg/kg BW/day p.o., respectively, for 10 days. Hepatotoxicity was induced in Groups B, C, D and E on the eighth day with paracetamol 2 g/kg BW/day. The hepatoprotective effect was evaluated by performing an assay of the serum proteins, albumin globulin ratio, alkaline phosphatase, transaminases and liver histopathology. The assay results were presented as mean and standard error of mean (SEM) for each group. The study group was compared with the control group by one-way ANOVA, followed by Bonferoni's test. A P-value of <0.01 was considered significant.
    RESULTS:

In groups C, D and E, liver enzymes and albumin globulin ratio were significantly (P < 0.01) closer to normal than in group B. Reduction in sinusoidal congestion, cloudy swelling and fatty changes and regenerative areas of the liver were observed on histopathological examination in groups C, D and E, whereas group B showed only hepatic necrosis.
    CONCLUSION:

The Ocimum sanctum alcoholic leaf extract shows significant hepatoprotective activity and synergism with silymarin.

I started with 10 grams of Holy Basil today.

I had a heavy legs and back workout this morning and was fairly sore from the workout. 10 minutes after taking the holy basil my soreness left me completely and all I could feel was the underlying stress from the workout and as the night has worn on that has now gone.

All I can say is wow. I did not get low blood glucose that I could discern so perhaps it a longer time thing rather than a single dose.

I feel fantastic right now and instead of crawling into bed tired I am still up and I feel great.

This is early days so I will not count my chickens just yet as a large dose may have effects not wanted. But on a single days dose I would say this is very interesting stuff.

I'll just go by how I feel for the moment as it's not so easy to do in the UK.

I woke up feeling a little sore but really only 10-20% of what I do on a Saturday after my Friday workout. I've just taken Holy Basil and most of that soreness has gone but not completely. I have had this nice relaxed feeling in my brain since taking it yesterday, not sure what that is but it's quite calming but alert at the same time. Also I feel very horny, that's the only way to describe it, sorry folks.

As it's only day 2 I will not adjust dosages and keep on the 10 grams for a week to gauge results.

Don't assume, I am not sure 10 grams will give any shrinkage and it will be good to get a boost from this powder.

Please have your baseline free and total testolevel tested.

Would be great if you could do the same after the use of holy basil so that we all can see if it works.

The research done showed that the animals were way above 1500ng/dl which was the limit of the researchers equipment.

Go onto ergo-log.com and look for holy basil, there are charts that I could not post as I have not the requisite number of posts on here yet.

Thumbs up Day 4: First workout on holy basil

Today was my first workout since starting using the holy basil. I started taking it last Friday, 10 grams a day.

I did not expect dramatic results as I'm only using a 1/3 of the full dose.

I have to say that today was probably the best workout I've had for years. I was able to really slow down my reps and feel my muscles really working. I had less rest between sets and I felt strong.

Saying that I did not raise the weight of the weights, but did dramatically slow down the reps especially the descending part of the rep.

I also felt great pumps in all of my muscles worked and was able to isolate them better, especially my chest.

I am going to research a better way of taking herbs, i.e. would it be better to take it as a tea, or boil it first, etc.

This stuff seems to really work, but early days yet.

This is the funniest post Ive read all day. Ive got some mukamuka root growing in my dumpster out back. My studies on hamsters indicate 500% increased test levels in the hamsters, also made hamster run so fast in his wheel he broke the bearings.

Hamster balls increased from 3lb to 5lb in 1 week.
