Hi guys, so i workout quite regularly between 5-6 times a week, mostly weight training. The thing is after i work a specific body part i develop small bruises in that area. I didn't really think anything of it at first, maybe just a muscle tissue tear during the breaking down process. However i've been getting them regularly for two months. I did my leg workout monday and noticed i have bruises on the inside of my thighs, quads, hams and calf. There aren't painful at all and are very small in size, but i wouldn't consider myself to bruise easily. is this common? Has anyone experienced it?
I thought i may be lacking something in my diet or vitamins/iron deficiency, but i take a multivitamin every morning and eat 1/2 grapefruit and bannana daily, eat a cup of veg with every meal and make sure my protein comes from red meat sources too, am i missing anything?
Thanks

I've never experienced anything like that... so I'm curious what other people have to say. Are you taking any medications like aspirin or anything else that might slow your blood from clotting (because that makes it easier for bruises to appear)? You really don't bruise easily if you do other things, like a bump a table? Are you anemic (that can cause easier bruising)?

Thanks for the reply
No im not taking anything other than a multivitamin, fish oil and a green tea extract pill, it only seems to happen since i took up weight training, in the past i played football, hockey, rugby, and nothing; not even a bruise due to physical contact. I did a blood test about two years ago (unrelated to this problem) and i wasn't anemic. My diet is in check; i've worked out my cals and macros etc i'm eating all the right foods, tracking also, so i think i could cancel out malnourishment. Like i said even when i played all these sports i never had this problem, i feel like i have enough energy to get good workouts too, im honestly stumped.
Is it unlikely to be a simple breakdown of muscle/a tear, before rebuilding? I consume a protein shake straight after a work out with a bannana and have my next meal within the next 2 hours. I just find it bizarre that on my cardio days/any other time other than weight training i am fine, with no signs of bruises. When i do weights i appear to have about 4 to 5 bruises scattered on the specific body part i worked on.

i am not a medical expert..but there could many causes to this bruising.
of course we know bruising is caused by damaged blood vessels under the skin that causes bleeding.
iron deficiency is usually the cause. anemia is notorious for causing bruising. of course just because you eat red meat or take a vitamin doesnt mean you are getting enough iron. women especially are often low in iron anyways. and many multivits dont contain iron, as it can be toxic. i'd check to see if yours does. when we work out it cause blood pressure to rise and along with the lifting can cause this. it does sound as if the workouts are causing your vessels to burst. perhaps laying off a bit on the lifting and see if that helps..and possibly get some blood work done to see if there is any other pathology going on. and your blood pressure checked and heck maybe a full physical. its probably nothing, but its better safe than sorry. If you only knew the power of the dark side!

Whoa, broscience galore up in this thread, lol. Its not anemia that causes bruising so much as it is low platelets (which help with clotting). Go see your doctor and get a CBC done for reassurance at least. That sort of all over bruising is not normal.

This happened to me a couple years ago. I didn't get them on all the muscles but there were some on my glutes a couple times. They didn't last long like a regular bruise though and were gone in a couple days...like the amount of time it takes for doms to go away. It hasn't happened since though. I don't know what caused it. Maybe because I was new and overdid it?

A lot of things can cause bruising, some very simply and benign, others not so (many haemotological disorders are linked to bruising). As has been mentioned, it is worth getting a full check up and blood panel done just to be safe

Oh come now, that's not really broscience as it is using that word "cause" instead of "associated with". In a lot of cases, bruising easily is associated with anemia - I've had several doctors tell me "I bruise more easily because I'm anemic". Sure, it's not the iron deficiency itself perhaps causing it but an underlying cause responsible for both, but it's really more of a language issue than a "broscience" issue.
Aplastic Anemia, for example, one of the more serious anemia conditions, certainly does cause bruising because it lowers ones platelet count, but the overarching name for the condition is still aplastic anemia.Niece: "How can you be immune to cars? Even like, a Ferrari?"

"Anemia" indicates low red blood cells. Platelets are resposible for clotting. So if you want to say that anemia is the chief reason for bruising, I am going to say its not. There are many diseases that are not even primary blood disorders in which clotting can become a problem, but I am not going to name them all and tell her she may have one.
In any case, bruising all over like that (versus one spot where you may have gotten a little tear) is not normal."A champion is someone who gets up even when he can't" ---Jack Dempsey

I have bruises at the same area of both of my legs. The bruise on my left leg is bigger and darker than the few spots on my right leg but they are at the same area, the outer thigh. I have made an appointment with the doctor for Monday. I read a handful of articles and they all have something in common. My family does not have a history of diabetes. So I'm self-ruling that out. I read that women are more prone to bruising especially when weightlifting or working out hard - which I think would have been the main cause because I over work the legs sometimes a bit too much.
So I believe it's a tear, and when it tore, I didn't stop training legs, therefore it got bigger??
The other I read a lot is about Iron. Somebody in the group mentioned about women having low iron, which I see a lot in my dad's family and also my mom. So from now till I see the doc, I'm going to try to increase my intake of iron - the least I can do. I don't know, hopefully doc "knows" what's up.

Yep
I just did same thing . I hadn't worked out in three years and I went and hit my legs like I used to do . 3 sets 15 squats 100lbs and leg press same and extentions and hamstrings and I just came on google cause noticed these small bruises on quads . Found this and I think it is cause hard work out and not used to it and Thank God for motrin and rock tape . But , really felt good . I will ask my doctor next visit to be sure . Since no spring chicken.

Did you do a really hard workout? Or did you change it up ? I got them... but think it is cause haven't worked out in couple years and was nuts enough to go in gym and hit legs like I used to. I doubt if it's diet . I eat better then most people as far as nutrition goes and cook all my vegetables in a Iron skillet . I am not spring chicken so .. will ask doctor but do think when I was working out regular..... I am a bit of a animal for a woman lol ... When, I would do some hard core biceps. I got them before . Didn't last long . I guess we will see what our doctors say . I am not concerned.

I get these all the time. After bench I get them on the outside of my pecs. Near the armpit. After Calf Raise, I get them on the upper-inside of Calf. After Squats, outside upper quad. My shoulders also do this but slightly less. I do bruise easily, but I have always determined this to be a break down of muscle fibers.

Hi everyone. New here. I actually created an account so I could get information about this. I know this is like 2 years late but I wanted to know what was going on with OP here... I am starting to get spotted bruises on my triceps again when lifting. They are usually small and can disappear in as little as 10 minutes and have never stayed longer than a hour or so (if I stopped lifting). I'm on mobile so I'm not sure if I just somehow missed OPs doctors response or if he never got back here.
