Definately a good one for forearms as a secondary. I use them as my last couple sets to round out my biceps workout.

I am not a fan. When I have done them in the past, they have caused elbow pain. I found that if I used a weight that was heavy enough to feel in the biceps, the elbows hurt. If I went too light to relieve stress from the elbows, I did not feel anything in the biceps.

Don't care for Zottman curls but love hammers. BB curls aggravate my elbows. Hammers are a great compromise.

I do them as part of a circuit called "rotator hell". YouTube search it, a nice warm-up circuit on overhead days.

They roll in and out of my bicep routine. I like hammer curls better, but Zottman's make a nice change-up.

Can't be bothered. To me you don't get the best of either move (curls, reverse curls) doing them. I normally do my barbell curls, preachers, and a set or two of reverses. The only argument that might be advanced for them is one of efficiency (use of very little time); but I think this might apply to a newb in a rec room or hotel gym hurrying off to something than a serious bodybuilder.

Guess I'll be googling Zottman just out of curiousity.

Even using the curl bar gives you grief?

I haven't been able to use the straight bar for years since my very annoying bout with tennis elbow (I hate that term) in both arms.
Curl bar works great for me with no elbow grief.

(I'm with you on the hammers)

    Carry on....back to Zottman.

EDIT: just saw a vid....I'm not enthralled and won't be adding them which is not to say they don't have their benefits. I'm a *compound* kinda guy anyway.

Glad you liked em' Jack. I think they add overall thickness to the arm through the heavy brachialis involvement. I fell into them after elbow soreness from bb curls and general boredom with curls although I do spiders on a reverse preacher. Little tweaks keep me going after all these years plus it adds variety.

Probably not the greatest exercise for rehab. Stay with items in your comfort zone while strength recovers. Add them in later if you feel the need.

well...i think it got lost a little in this thread but to your original post...I just think they are a good workout in terms of handling the forearms somewhat. Did you feel you targeted those areas at all?

My opinion is someone is going around making up exercises like the Zercher squat and now the Zottman curls. Someone has a fascination with the letter Z.

When I was a kid at the neighborhood gym, which was primarily a powerlifting gym, the most powerfully-built men did heavy Zotts -- exercising a bit of "English." Although I had an interest in them, I didn't dare deviate from the routine prepared for me by the gym owner. It wasn't until my body matured that I got the hang of them. They were fantastic! I swear they made my upper arms and my forearms thicker on the outside.

However, as a rehab exercise for an arm coming out of a cast, it sounds risky for injury.

Haven't done them in years. Gonna change up the routine to include them for a while.

Dude all exercises are made up really, you don't think the first humans knew right off the bat how to do clean and jerks do you? lol

Actually the Zottman curl was named after the guy that invented them.

I don't really understand why someone would perform the Zottman curl (over many other options of bicep exercises). You get the benefit of a dumbell curl, and the negative of a reverse curl. Why not just perform dumbell curls followed by reverse curls and get the positive and negative of both movements?

I suppose there may be benefit in doing this exercise just to change up the routine but I'm not sure it should feature prominently given the finite number of exercises that one would want to perform during any biceps workout.

Regardless, it's certainly not going to hurt and its better than nothing. I just think there are a variety of better exercises. Suggest using this only as a change of pace, not a permanent or foundation fixture.

I think they're outstanding, mainly due to the unique isometric hold and twist at the top of the motion. I use them in every third workout that I specifically target the bicep. I feel it gives the braciahlis a nice pump.
