I made this so I have a place to put the plates before the pull-up.
I ran a piece of 1/2 inch re-bar inside the 1 inch gas pipe. It's welded on each side. Since the bar is 48 inches I wanted to strengthen it.

Nice!
Are the various pieces welded together? (If not, how are they attached to each other?)
Edit: Never mind about my question. I hadn't seen your second post yet when I posted my question. But, still, nice job!
Edit again: Can you post a close-up of the upper section where the bent pieces are attached to the straight ones?

This.
Looks like good work, but without any reinforcement of where your flat stock meets the peices that are flush with the ceiling, I'd be concerned with that as your weak point. A couple 3-4" triangle gussets would probably cover you.
Last thing you need is to come crashing down with 200+ lbs on your ankles.Your freedom to be you includes my freedom to be free from you. -AW

Why did you use gas pipe with re-rod inside of it instead of solid stock? Cost-saving, availability of materials? I once did a similar gas pipe project and filled the pipe with sand and corked the ends to stop them up to keep the pipe from bending. I share an affinity for using what's available.
What benefit did you gain in bending the flat stock at the apex instead of making a triangle with a cut and a line of fillet? Is it just a design thing; or is there some structural benefit; or is it a time-saving measure?
You sure about not wanting gussets on those t-joints? Wouldn't take much to overbuild it.
Did you bolt this to the bottom of the joists? I suppose this could be bolted against a wall, too. If you suffer tear-out, though, it'll be under load and could be a catastrophic failure. Have you given thought to designing the piece to bolt into the sides of the joists, or through them?
Very resourceful.

I've build a pull-up bar before and I didn't put r-bar in it. I used it plenty it did flex but, i am still confident in it. Maybe not one arm pull-up in the center confident.
The welds were OK never a sign of cracking on the welds.
I put the rebar in this one so i could hang from the center, also it's longer then my previous bar. I had rebar laying around and it was free.
your right I probably could have just cut all three in half and did a triangle shape. Maybe I was thinking less load bearing welds.
Right now there are 4 inch bolts into 2x6 I'm more worried about sheering a bolt then a tear-out maybe I can run a 4x4 in the attic along the flat section and run new hole and 5 inch bolt though the center.Last edited by ExtremistPullup; 06-20-2011 at 08:53 AM.
