I usually train during my lunch break at work, which leaves things a little rushed.
I quickly eat lunch (big meal) then drive straight to gym (15mins) and start training.

a lot of it depends what you want from the pre workout. The "do not eat" guide is because the vasodilation/pump benefits seem to be less when taken with food.
But a supplement like rage or other just stims are going to give you the pure energy boost with or without food. Most just don't feel all the other ancillary effects as much with food.
if your jsut taking a "pump complex" type product it will most likely be much more effective on an empty stomach.

Clout can be taken with food. It's pretty much stims and NO stuff that's negatively affected by food, as well as bcaa's and individual amino acids. Simple carbs, like gatorade generally won't interfere.
