I got to meet Rick and his son.
Rick is a History buff, so theres a load he knows about things in that area. His son is a complete dumbass. He buys so much fake and forged stuff that there is often difficulty in finding material to use for the show that relates to him working in the shop.US Navy Active Duty 1998-2005
Lt Officer 2005-2008
Currently "advising" the US Navy

As long as they've been in business and as many things as he's seen come into the store. I'm not at all surprised that he knows a little about most things that come into the shop.
I hate watching it though because I know exactly what he's going to say every time they cut to him talking after someone brings something in.
"This thing is really cool, I just had to have it in my shop. I just have to get it for the right price."
Then after he brings in the expert, I can usually give you a guess of within $100 of what rick is going to offer them first and what he is going to actually pay them. It's become far too predictable but you learn a lot about some cool stuff.

He's going to offer half it's worth with the reasoning he has to make some money on it.
And he will usually meet the owner half-way or for 2/3's the items true value.
But keep in mind when someone buys something he never gets what he's asking for either.
And then there is the money their getting paid for being on the show.
I remember first season of American Chopper. Their all driving old beat up vehicles.
2nd season - brand new SUV's. LOL!

Yes he does. He was on a local radio show. Apparently he reads the most median boring stuff imaginable. He seems like a very intelligent guy with a very strange interest in his job and history.
…we have not spent the last 65 million or so years finely honing our physiology to watch Oprah. Like it or not, we are the product of a very long process of adaptation to a harsh physical existence, and the past couple centuries of comparative ease and plenty are not enough time to change our genome. We humans are at our best when our existence mirrors, or at least simulates, the one we are still genetically adapted to live. And that is the purpose of exercise. - Mark Rippetoe
