omega-3 fatty acids have anabolic properties.. more omega 3's lead to a greater anabolic response to insulin and amino acid infusion..
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21501117Increased dietary long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (LCn-3PUFA) intake stimulates muscle protein anabolism in individuals who experience muscle loss due to aging or cancer cachexia. However, it is not known whether LCn-3PUFA elicit similar anabolic effects in healthy individuals. To answer this question we evaluated the effect of 8 weeks of LCn-3PUFA supplementation (4 g·d-1 of Lovaza®) in nine 25-45 y old healthy subjects on the rate of muscle protein synthesis (by using stable isotope labelled tracer techniques) and the activation (phosphorylation) of elements of the mTOR-p70s6k pathway during basal, postabsorptive conditions and during a hyperinsulinemic-hyperaminoacidemic clamp. We also measured the concentrations of protein, RNA, and DNA in muscle to obtain indices of the protein synthetic capacity, translational efficiency and cell size. Neither the basal muscle protein fractional synthesis rate nor basal signalling element phosphorylation changed in response to LCn-3PUFA supplementation but the anabolic response to insulin and amino acid infusion was greater after LCn-3PUFA (i.e., the muscle protein fractional synthesis rate during insulin and amino acid infusion increased from 0.062 ± 0.004 to 0.083 ± 0.007 %·h-1 and the phospho mTORSer2448 and p70s6kThr389 concentrations increased by ~50%; all P < 0.05). In addition, the muscle protein concentration and the protein-to-DNA ratio (i.e., muscle cell size) were both greater (P < 0.05) after LCn-3PUFA supplementation. We conclude that LCn-3PUFA have anabolic properties in healthy young and middle aged adults.

The infusion that was used was set so they didn't maximally stimulate muscle protein synthesis, but rather that it only stimulated ~50% of maximal muscle protein synthesis. The meals most "athletes" eat will maximally stimulate muscle protein synthesis on its own. Whether it has any effect under these conditions is doubtful. Study did not report diet composition of subjects so it's unknown whether or not the "proposed" increase in muscle mass was due to increasing protein synthesis because of sub-optimal protein intake or not.

I am sure the study was not authorized to trick people by reporting different diets. The take home message is that the protein-to-DNA ratio were greater after omega 3 supplementation. The test subjects were chosen at random, each had a different diet. The overall Diet was not a controlled variable. The only supplement that was added to the diet was LCn-3PUFA. At the end of the experiment ALL of the text subjects reported an increase in amino acid infusion after LCn-3PUFA supplementation.

When you DON'T control variables or even have KNOWLEDGE of them, you have to make more assumptions in drawing conclusions or making extrapolations because:
1. Those uncontrolled variables may have influenced the results
2. The very important but unreported data may hold information guiding better conclusions
From the study, the fish oil only had an anabolic response to what would be considered by many as a low protein meal. Chances of it producing an anabolic response to a high protein meal like you probably eat is low since protein synthesis does not infinitely increase. So, what was the diet of a typical subject? Don't know. At this point, you cannot rule in or rule out much and making an extrapolation to athletes eating a high protein diet is tenuous at best. As much as I would like to say hey that study applies to me, I can't. It takes about ~30 grams +/- a little of protein to maximally stimulate protein synthesis. The subjects only ended up getting infused 315 MG per kg FFM over the course of 3 hours. Is is possible that the fish oil could have taken it up another notch with an infusion that already maxed out MPS? Sure but this study did not come close to showing that.Last edited by in10city; 04-27-2011 at 01:28 PM.

Don't expect a supplement company to wipe your ass for you, only YOU know what you eat, which pre you take, and how much folic acid you intake daily. Supplement accordingly.-POISON
