Dude. the BEST thing you can do to speed healing and heal well (regarding scar tissue) is to WALK. Go out, and walk a lot. Goto the mall. WALK. At least walk as much as you can in your house if you really feel like you can't go out, or go walk outside your house. You need to absolutely walk though, trust me. I'm surprised your surgeon didn't tell you how important this is? It's crucial to your recovery and so you don't have longterm pain. Also you'll see you will feel sooo much better day to day if you do a good amount of walking.
Yes I had the testicular pain as well, ached bad, and my left nut swelled up a lot and was bruised etc (the swelling and bruising is normal, just blood/inflammation, it will go away). This has all gone away and I am absolutely fine now. After like 2 weeks post surgery.. you'll feel fine man, just do a lot of walking in the mean time. The worst thing you can do is to not move around at all and stay in a chair all day or in bed. WALK. =]The Bundy's have a hot foreign exchange chick living in their house.

Still got a few weeks before surgery. Been 5 months since the injury and weighed myself after it for the first time yesterday since my scale broke and I couldn't be bothered to get a new since I'm not training right now. I was down from 215 lbs to 211.5 lbs which was very encouraging that I didn't lose too much muscle. Waistline is the same so haven't gained fat.
Measurements are down 1 inch on thighs and chest and half an inch on arms, forearms, and calves. Even though it's not a lot I feel much smaller now which I really don't like but it'll be easy to get back what I lost once I get back to lifting.
My advice to anybody who's waiting for surgery is to keep the calories up to minimize muscle loss

I'm surprised how much muscle mass I've managed to retain so far at 16 days post surgery.
I will say this...
I lifted right up to and even the day before my surgery. If there's no pain, there is no harm in it. My surgeon who is a hernia specialist, one of the best in Canada, said this. Strangulation is EXTREMELY rare. If I were you i'd keep on lifting until the day of the surgery. The Bundy's have a hot foreign exchange chick living in their house.

I'm 25 days post surgery and I feel great.
I haven't started working out yet, just because... I'm kind of enjoying the time off, and giving myself extra time to heal.
I will start with light free weights soon though.
I feel zero after effects right now, zero pain. I can walk, run, sleep like I want to, etc. No problems, no pain, I don't even feel anything different at all.The Bundy's have a hot foreign exchange chick living in their house.

2 months is veryyyy conservative. That means 8 weeks post-surgery.
What you should do IMO, is start back up lightly after 4 weeks, and work your way back up gradually, then after another 4 weeks, you'll be good to go and lift as heavy as you want (after 2 months/8 weeks total).
IF your repair was done without mesh, that's another story...
Some docs are just way too conservative. See how you feel after a month..The Bundy's have a hot foreign exchange chick living in their house.

Found out about this surgery without mesh called desarda which I thought sounded ok but know that I know how it's done it sounds really rough.
Basically, instead of using mesh a piece of the oblique is cut and folded over the hernia gap and sutured. I thought about it because I don't like the idea of having a mesh in my body but this sounds even worse and more painful. It's supposed to reduce the odds of recurrence but I don't know

Hello all hernia related folks. In May of 2012 I had an laparoscopic abdominal hernia repair (mesh) after a previous gallbladder surgery (cholecystectomy) about 4 month prior. Since then, I have had some irritation off and on. It is mainly when sitting. I've discussed it with the surgeon at the time and the result was it is part of the healing process. I can go weeks to a month without a hitch. I talked to my GP a few weeks ago and he said the scar tissue continues to build around even after a year, and pressure on the abdominal wall when sitting (I have a desk job) is putting pressure on the area. I'm just suprised something like this would still be a issue. It is very annoying.
Can any folks out there relate to any of this? Any thoughts? Any OTC folks took that might have helped? The interwebs information is not much help in recovery periods past a few months."Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength" -Arnold

I'm 4 weeks and 1 day out of Open mesh tension free inguinal hernia surgery..
I have a lump that is firm, in pretty much the same spot where the original hernia was.
I called my doc and he was like... duh,, its the healing ridge.. it's fine, your hernia did not come back, it's completely normal don't worry.
Anyone else had something like this though?
It's a bulge under the incision where the original hernia was. I read it's probably just fluid and stuff. The Bundy's have a hot foreign exchange chick living in their house.

Heh. Makes me feel good about my doc. PRIOR to the surgery (open, mesh, lower abdomen right side only), he told me that lump is *exactly* what he wants to see. He told me the same thing immediately after the surgery that he was going to see me again in 2-3 weeks, and if that ridge had formed, he'd clear me to do everything, including lifting lighter weights.
I guess I should give an update.
SURGERY: September 6th, 2013 (open, mesh, right side only, lower abdomen)
POST-OP DAY 1: very painful, couldn't move much without pain
POST-OP DAY 2: pain reduced significantly, walked 1 mile outdoors slowly, still significant pain in the process of standing or sitting, but little/no pain when still or walking
DAY 3: Pain greatly reduced to the point where I could do high-incline (15%) treadmill walking for 50 minutes. Got heart rate as high as 165 with no discernible added pain or soreness.
DAYS 4-7: Continue high-incline treadmill walking for 45-60 minutes per day. Got average heart rate up around 150 for one of the workouts, even.
WEEK 2: High-incline treadmill walks 6 days. I actually set a personal record for highest average heart rate in a week. That's right, higher than the weeks where I was running 5-6 days per week prior to surgery. (I don't include weight training sessions in that, so I'm saying that in a direct comparison to running, the high-incline treadmill walking I did 7-14 days after surgery was a *better* cardio workout than my running.) Also started doing a few pushups. Worked up to 3ish sets of 10ish by the end of this week. Ended the week with a killer 2-hour high-incline treadmill walk: average heart rate 156, max heart rate 177, 1600+ calories (per my Polar HRM,) 6.81 miles, 15% incline the whole way, average speed 3.4mph.
WEEK 3: Follow-up visit was on Tuesday. Cleared to resume all running, and to do strength training. Doc said to keep it to weights I could do 15 reps on for a week or two, according to feel. I was more cautious than the Doc, so I did 2 bodyweight-only circuit workouts this week (pushups, low-bar inverted rows, assisted dips, assisted pullups, walking lunges with superset to bodyweight squats) and didn't lift anything until the next. Treadmill walks Monday and Tuesday, then returned to jogging on Wednesday, hard interval run on Thursday, and ended the week with a 2-hour, 14.5-mile run on Sunday.
WEEK 4: Full heavy running week (I'm training for a half marathon) of 40+ miles plus 2 upper body and 1 lower body strength training session. Kept to Doc's orders to do 15-rep weights. No issues.
WEEK 5 (this past week): 2 upper and 1 lower. Increased weight to 10-12 rep level. Began week with full heavy running, latter part of week beginning taper for Half Marathon race on 10/20. No issues.
I've eaten extremely cleanly since the surgery other than one splurge on wings two days after the operation (NFL Week 1..had to have some wings ). The doctor commented on my visit that for someone my age (44) my recovery seemed to be going much better than normal, and after asking a few questions, he attributed it to a combo of prior fitness and current nutrition, so as others have said, I'd definitely encourage eating well post-op. But yeah, the bottom line is that was able to run 14.5 miles at an 8:18 per mile pace 23 days after the surgery and resumed a pretty normal strength training regime a little over a month afterward.http://fattofitat44.blogspot.com/

Yes, I still have a lump right there as of today, 5 weeks and 5 days after the 9/6 surgery. It's in the same area as the hernia lump, but it is fairly significantly larger than the hernia, maybe twice the diameter. In the first conversation with my surgeon, he said that my scar tissue would grow into the mesh and it would be swollen for a while, and that the scar tissue itself is what repairs the area and keeps the hernia from coming back. He was so nonchalant about me having a hardened lump there that it seemed perfectly normal and a big part of the healing, so I didn't think to ask how long, but my understanding is that scar tissue can remain harder and more swollen than normal tissue for a very long time. I'm no expert or anything and haven't thought much about it, but I've just assumed that the lump will be there for months, if not longer. Now, my hernia was in my lower abdomen, to the right and above my penis, so I was probably less weirded out about lumps, mesh, scar tissue, and whatnot than if I were dealing with one in my scrotum. That lack of concern probably helped contribute to my lack of asking too many detailed questions about the lump as well. And of course given that I've had no pain and have resumed a normal exercise routine, it's not something I'm worried about at all. Hope that helps.

I probably had the same kind of hernia as you. Inguinal hernia.
Just above penis, but me it's on the left side.
It was a small bulge before surgery (unless I worked out then it swelled up). and yes now the lump after surgery is bigger in diameter slightly and in a slightly different spot. My doc was very nonchalant about it too, over the phone anyway.. in fact he seemed annoyed that I asked, lol. He was like.. if you had read the papers I gave you, you would know it's something called the healing ridge, blablabla, completely normal, etc.
It was bigger last week by far, it seems to be getting smaller as time goes by but it's still just as big as the original hernia right now. My doc did say by December it should be gone.
Like you.. I have zero pain at this point. Since week 3 it's been largely pain free. Honestly right now, at 4 weeks after surgery, I don't even feel like I had a surgery whatsoever (but I have not started working out yet, my doc said I could but I'm just playing it safe until I see him for my followup on Oct 17). FYI I was also largely pain free before surgery as well.
Now... just out of curiosity.. any chance you can post a pic of your lump here? (no homo). I will do the same, just to compare. =]The Bundy's have a hot foreign exchange chick living in their house.

Inguinal Hernia
I was diagnosed and confirmed that I have Inguinal Hernia. I feel so frustrated, humiliating and depressed to know that I must stop my workout because of my upcoming surgery.
I hope you know what I feel. You know the feeling that your in the momentum, closer to your goals but then you have to stop because of this?
I need your words of encouragement guys. I want to continue and gain more.

Update:
Saw the doc on October 17th, he was very pleased with my hernia recovery. Said I was in no danger of messing up the surgery at all and I could lift 1000lbs if I wanted but I should start working out lightly since I took 5 weeks off from doing anything aside from walking.
He said my bump should be gone by January (when I see him next for my last post-surgery check-up).
I started working out with 10lbs dumbbells 2 days ago. I notice my bump maybe gets a bit bigger as the day goes on.. much like a hernia... bit scary.
Is it the same for you guys? The Bundy's have a hot foreign exchange chick living in their house.
