    Planet Fitness??

Had a question for you guys. Is Planet Fitness really as bad as folks make it out to be? Meaning, would any of you (or do any of you) workout there? The reason I ask is I just accepted a contract position with a consulting firm that will require a long commute in a very high traffic area. What I want to do is leave my house super early and workout somwhere. There is a Planet Fitness literally within a couple of miles of my desitination and it's only 10/mo! Can you actually lift there and exert yourself without getting 'spoken to' or, worse, kicked out?

For overweight housewives that want to walk on the treadmill it is fine....for a bodybuilder:NO!!! Very few free weights and DB's that only go to 60lbs......very hard to build a physique. I would invest in a home setup before I would give them my money......$10.00 per month=you get what you pay for!!!

Thanks guys. I do have a home gym and that's where I've been working out for a year no. Although my equipement sucks, I can do all the basics. The PF idea is really because my new job has me working allot of hours and heading directly into a very high traffic area. I think what I'm going to do is structure my workouts so that I can do any deadlifting at home. As for squatting, I talked to the manager of the gym and he told me at the hour of the day I'll be working out there, they aren't all that crowded and it will be a good time for the heavier lifts. I guess this particular gym has a decent size free weight area AND It is downstairs from all the cardio equipement. This might work.. Hey, if not, I can always cancel..

And hey... LOL.. If I take any sh*t at all, I will load 500# on the bar, pull it and just let it go as I would in a real gym... !!! I'll be setting off Lunk Alarms throughout New England!!

Might wanna check out the free weight area before signing up. I don't think they have olympic barbells...only preset up to about 70 lb. and as others have said the dumbells are usually only up to 60s.

We had a wannabe Planet Fitness up here disguised as a Gold's Gym. $10/month, DBs up to 90 lbs, tons of BBs and machines...worst place I've ever lifted. You couldn't do anything without worrying about one of the staff coming over and kicking you out. Couldn't deadlift...not even SLDLs.

OP, just by going off what Ive seen you post on these forums u would not like it!

I worked out in one for about a year, was just starting.

    DBs, your first problem.
no racks, just a couple smith machines always used for everything.
ur not supp to even grunt.
dont even think about dropping the weight on the floor higher then from a few inches.
not supp to dead lift, but some do.
not supp to take the bar and make it a tbar row. and yup no tbar row machines at all.
nautilus equipment i felt wasnt user friendly.

now depends on the place. we got to know a couple of the staffers well and i was warned before cause we were exhaling to loudly on some reps. we did sorta a part grunt, part moan part whistle sorta sound but yeah was told "almost had to pull the alarm on ya cause u exhaled to loudly." I said sorry i was breathing.

    and now a shorts story.

i had just left there and knew a few people that were still there. one of them showed up to the new place i go and told me one of the staffers approached him one day cause his tank top was intimidating to others. yup...true story!
Used to be fat, now just fat with a lot of muscle.

Good stuff. I decided against it after all. I'm actually joining another gym that I found nearby. A little more money but it's old school. DB's go up close to 200#, Heavy Olympic PL Bars, Multiple squat racks and power cages.... etc. etc. They cater to more of the PL/Bodybuilding crowd, which is great. I know they're trying to get Soccer Moms in there so they are trying to soften it up a little because PF and WOW are kicking their ass in this market. I think I'll be happier. That thing with the Tank Top pisses me off. It's funny. on another board I was accused of being a little ****gy for caring about that; but, I've got to be honest, any gym that would prohibit the wearing of a certain T-shirt is no place I want to be.
Also, heavy breathing??? Are you sh*tting me? Maybe I'm to new to all this but I thought proper breathing was part of proper form.. I don't know..maybe it's just me.

Because I'm up at all hours of the day, I was considering paying the $10 a month to be able to do cardio whenever instead of being limited to the hours of my gym. Not a HORRIBLE investment during prep.

    Absolutely

It’s 10 a month. I go there specifically for Cardio, as all my big lift just require free weights a bench and a rack. If you have a home gym then do your main lifts at home and go there for nothing more than saving money on a treadmill and not having to run outside

ok...so I am a member of planet fitness. But....I am quite limited. They have no bench press benches or incline bench or squat racks(just smith machines)...so chest and leg days are a no go for me at PF. I have to go to another gym that is further away for that. I do not dead lift so I can have a decent back workout there although there back machines are also limited. The upper end for dbs is 75 lbs. I typically do 70 lbs 10-12 reps on my overhead presses so shoulder day is ok. I generally keep my body fat in check and At 6-4 230 lbs I feel a little out of place there to be honest. Its nice and clean though, and the people are generally friendly. Oh...and no seated calf machine there. I even asked them if I could donate a calf machine. They never got back to me about it.

My dad and stepmom are members of PF and my wife and I will go there to workout when visiting because it's free. It's OK for an occasional workout. It is not for an everyday lifter and bodybuilder. My dads PF gym has up to 75# DBs which is sufficient for most things. I can usually get a decent shoulder or back workout working out there. Without proper Olympic barbells and racks, it's not impossible, but severely limits chest and leg days.

I live within walking distance of a PF, but drive 10 miles one way to EOS Fitness if that tells you anything. EOS is only $16 but at least I can grunt, drop dumbbells from time to time on fail reps and not have to worry about getting kicked out. Not to mention they have better equipment than PF.
