Pretty good, aside from being behind someone who appears to be sitting there in her lounge recliner. One of the judges?Last edited by nova6868; 03-08-2011 at 08:21 PM.

Yeh it should be obvious since I did say that in one of my posts.
but so what?
You're missing the point completely. Potential new lifters are not browsing the olympic section of bodybuilding forums reading Q&A with broz, chances are people reading that are already lifters. A lot of people who come across videos like "strongest 20 year old in the world" or whatever it was titled on youtube, will just be random kids who could potentially be lifters but can easily get put off by reading the uploader's comments sounding like a knobend with the attitude, whether he's like that in person or not.PBs:

Therein lies the rub, where do you draw the line in how you respond. I know on here he was very helpful in describing his methods. However, without that background, you could assume that he is a total @ZZ because of his comments on youtube. Although, I do agree that some really stupid trolls get on there and post some stupid sh$t.

man that was scary on the jerk
his clean is so flawless technique wise, yet his jerk is so strange and just doesn't seem like it should work as well as traditional jerk.updated 2011

It is a lot slower. It is impossible for you to drop under the bar as fast as in the split jerk. Think of it in geometery terms.
Squat Jerk- If I keep my feet in the same spot and lower my body that happens at a rate of about 9.8ms2 plus what I can add from the push.
Split Jerk- Now I can drop at atleast that same rate but in addition I can move my feet out which changes the angle of my legs relative to the floor. This of course converts some of the vertical height I had previously and transfers it to horizontal distance. My legs are just as long but now they are at an angle shortening the height I need to push the barbell up.
In essence you gain not only from your ability to fall/push yourself down but also from the more favorable geometery of having your legs wider stance. It is a faster/more effecient movement and has the added benefit of more stability.

The squat jerk is technically the most efficient way to jerk, which is why it's useful for lifters who can't drive the bar high enough to power or split jerk it.
In the squat jerk, the feet do not have to be repositioned, the lifter simply has to drop under the bar (flexing the hips and knees), while pushing under with the arms and shoulders. The bar barely has to be driven to nose-height.
With a split jerk, you have to drop under AND reposition the feet. Moving the feet into the split takes time.
The more favourable geometry of the split is why it is so much more forgiving than the squat jerk. You have much more room for error with a split jerk. The squat jerk has to have a perfect bar path.
This is why the spit jerk is infinitely more stable. But more stable doesn't mean it's faster or more efficient. There is a trade off, you have to give up some efficiency for improved forgiveness/stability.
Would you argue that a split clean or split snatch is faster or more efficient than the squat clean or squat snatch due to the more favourable geometry? Why aren't there any elite lifters doing the split versions?
Again, Kendrick isn't a great example of a squat jerk since he catches it so high.Last edited by J.L.C.; 03-12-2011 at 09:41 AM.

I think we agree but are using different terms.
The squat jerk is not overall more effecient. It can allow a lifter to drop the bar lower than one can in a split jerk. If it is caught and controlled correctly he can then return to standing but this will cost more in terms of total work because the distance moved will be greater.
It is also not as effecient because the lifter cannot get under the bar as quickly. Moving the feet out takes time however it is concurrent with the drop under the bar at which point you have no weight on your feet anyway. The squat jerk will take more time and the bar will drop farther.
Unfortunately the catch positions of the clean and the snatch are far too low and would be very difficult to stand up in because of the biomechanical ineffeciency of trying to fully squat a weight in a split position.
There are few elite lifters using the squat jerk, and I can't think of any younger <25yro lifters using the squat technique. The fact you have to ride the weight further down and catch it perfectly is risky and ineffecient. The speed under the bar in the split jerk means the bar has to move far less and the split style is a lot more stable as you mentioned.
The benefit of the squat jerk is that you can take the bar to a much lower depth if you lack the strength to split jerk. Then you can OH squat the weight in a slow movement if necessary to complete the lift. The total work outputted is greater however it is over more time and distance which can allow someone to complete a lift they couldn't otherwise. In this sense it is more effecient because it requires less peak power than the split jerk.

Thank you
Thanks, Nova6868. See my post above for next year. I'll try to be more cognizant of spectator views in 2012 and keep my arm down. I had back surgery less than 3 weeks earlier and wasn't exactly comfortable....
:-)
Btw, feel free to e-mail suggestions for next year to r_crass@yahoo.com.
