This is a great thread man. For people who want to take guitar seriously or play in a band, I highly recommend learning how to read music. Unlike tabs, if you can read music, you'll be able to play the song without having to know how it goes. Also, if you're in a band and everyone reads music, you'll be able to be able to play the songs well quicker.

btw, does anyone know any websites that have free sheet music??

thanks for the addition - what do you kids think of guitar pro file with lessons instead so y'all can hear what needs to played. I'll start as always with neoclassical and then branch into different styles.

Did you guys all buy Guitar Pro or what? I had the trial version for a while and it was pretty cool but it ran out. Now I just use Power Tab.

would anyone recommend a really detailed beginners book that kinda guides you through learning guitar step by step......i've learned the pentatonic scales, i've done a lot of the exercises but I just kinda don't know what to do step by step. Lots of the time i don't know what fingers to use, especially with chords.

Like if i play an A, do you just try to place your index finger over the 2 strings of the second fret or do you try and use your index and middle finger to press down the two strings seperately. Stuff like that I don't know. Theres so much info on the sites and all over the net but its like I don't know where to begin and where to move on to.....a nice book laying it out for me would be helpful

this is true, there is a lot of information but a lot of the time, the simplest things are skipped over.

if i am playing a chord that uses three strings (power chord) version of the A, then i will use 1 finger to "barre" the strings, but if i use the 4 string 0222 version i will use 3 fingers separately

theres an idiots guide to playing guitar, its a book i'm not trying to diss you, and its pretty decent - but imo its better to get a friend to show u the first couple of steps just so you can learn the ropes on how to hold the guitar, positioning, finger spacing, which part of the finger to use, how to form chords, how to pluck, pick etc ...

everything after that - the internet will do for you.

sorry abt the delayed lessons. I've got alot of work atm - once i get a couple of hrs free i'll write one up for ya. Is neoclassical still ok or should i make a hendrix like lesson? or pentatonic madness ala slash? or maybe some hammet for the newbies?

but remember kids i can't sweep for ****.

and what about the lessons in the earlier pages? Those are actually quite good. Give em a shot you may learn sumthin'.

Here is what I finally did.
I purchased a guitar trainer by Tascam.
It enables me to slow the tune down drastically but still maintain its orginal sound and pitch. This enables me to figure out songs note for note. Once I speed it up and play at the proper time ratio, I then add my own style into the songs, but still; maintain the orginal melody. It is awesome as hell.

Did not cost as much as you woud think. I got it used.
Besides I have gotten a few viruses through torrent sites.
This makes it easier, I can be outside or where ever and use it without need of a computer near by.

did anyone here teach themselves? I just got my guitar today and I have been messing around. the dvd they sent only has a few lessons, but even those seem complicated to me. all these chord positions I need to memorize and stuff. I also cant grasp the eadgbe stuff, and finger numbers, etc.

I dont have the time or money to get formal lessons right now, so I want to teach myself. guitar is a life long thing so someday I will get lessons, but not now. closest I can get is community college stuff, but even that is iffy.

Perfect practice makes perfect they say. I also struggle with this but try to make up for it with pick attack and tone.

Have you checked out the video lessons on UG?

I taught a few people the basics and jammed with many awesome guitarists. Find someone you know to teach you the basics and maybe buy a beginner guide to guitar.

http://www.wholenote.com/ is really good for novice players.

Good luck. I didn't take lessons until I had been playing for 12 years... Needless to say I wish I had; it really took the blinders off to music in general and helped me.

I like the Squire California series, the greg bennet samicks are not bad too. Check out the Ibanez RGs too, the RG321 is pretty cheap, alongside it's floating bridge version, RG320.

Ferraris of guitars? For me it's the Caparison Apple Horn There are alot of obsecure brands and custom shops all around the world, the two you mentioned just happens to be well known.

Good Choice. Paul Reed Smith or ESP Custom would be awesome as well.
