So this 10 year old just chit all over the last 13 years of me playing guitar in about 1 minute. I need to learn how to fingerpick because god damn that was insane.

Talking about bare-bones rhythm for each chord with absolutely no ornamentation added (i.e., hammerons/pulloffs, fills, licks):
Once you can rock it with a click solidly (shouldn't take too long), then it's time to dump the click and practice to a drum machine, or better yet - good live-player-recorded drum loops. That will get your groove together. Click for time, drums for groove.

Yeah his absurd finger style really does sh*t all over pick-based technique regardless. He's ripping ascending and descending alternating diatonic twos with awesome articulation like it's nothing - hard as sh*t for pick style unless you cheat (i.e. using slurs, economy picking etc). Playing bass lines while simultaneous applying fluid, super fast tremolo on the upper register. Man, f*ck that man-child.
I'm curious whether he can palm mute with that technique though. If he can't then... out goes a lot of rock and metal.Last edited by rollerball; 12-30-2017 at 09:45 AM.

Really digging Revocation lately. Not the fastest or most brutal or most technical but has a really nice, clean thrashy feel and the solo in this vid rocks. The solo is somewhat atypical for this style, imo, great groove with interesting phrasing everything all tight and in the pocket.
another tight one

I think i found my next project. Dominion is the shortest so i may go that route but above the influence looks extremely fun to play and both songs are going to push my boundaries. Ive always mired rusty cooley and i think if i can learn one of these its gonna dramatcally help build up my speed on the fretboard.
Ideally i wanna learn dark matter because i love the song but i cant find a single playthrough of it. Ill check tabs for all 3 and figure which is the most doable.

Alright I'm convinced playing from the elbow gives superhuman guitar playing abilities. Notice in the first Cooley video how he sounds normal whenever he's playing from the wrist and then, BAM, he switches to elbow mode and hulks out just goes warp f*cking speed. Then he switches back to bruce banner mode with his wrist.
I need to access this power.

Not sheriff if this applies but i spoke with a guitar teacher years ago and he said that you should try playing guitar with a price of paper tucked between your arm and your torso, as the best guitar players usually keep their fretting arm close to their bodies when they are really playing

Lol ill try and get something set up. If not ill do a different one to try and get everything like a run through of some of the solos in it or something. I think the main thing i do switching strings is accentuating the up or down stroke of the string im leaving so it causes me to skip over the adjacent string without hitting it. Like ill bring my pointer finger up and over the string with my left hand and mirror that motion to my right. Not the best way of explaining it but its just sort of a really subtle thing you figure out over time when you grind it out so long like palm muting lightly on the strings youve already sweep picked. Things you hear people talk about and then never put much thought in and realize you just naturally picked it up along the way without realizing it.
Actually i just sat down and looked at it and i am actually palm muting the strings im not picking the entire time i play runs like that. To go over the string i am shifting my palm and sort of rolling it up or down causing my picking hand to come up and over the string im trying to avoid, its stopping excess string noise and itd also making the transition from string to string easier while still keeping a consistent tempo. Kind of weird how you never really notice those things til you sit down and evaluate it.
I actually keep my arm flush against my body when i play unless im standing or something.Last edited by deadhead6391; 12-31-2017 at 05:33 PM.

Ahh, interesting. Yeah I figured there had to be some kind of subtle movement that is hard to see, that description of rolling your palm up and down to facilitate string crossing actually makes sense.
I think my biggest hurdle with picking from elbow is that I feel really tense whenever I pick that way.

Hey guys. Haven't played seriously in like 4 or 5 years. Played since i was 11... Was in a few death metal band until I was like 19 and sold half my rig because I was homeless and then while I was living in detroit my apartment was broken into and stole what I had left. Pretty much stopped playing seriously since... Have an acoustic guitar and pick that up once in a while but its not the same. I sort of have a sour taste and disdain when I think about playing again. Went through crazy **** with bands and friends...you really see people true colors when money is involved or recognition.
Was listening to frantic disembowlment by cannibal corpse the other day and I remember covering that song and played it at a local bar right before I had my chit stolen.
Been out of the game for a while guys. Not really sure where I should start.... Not really looking to play chit like cannibal per say... Want more of thrash metal sound.
Any one want to help me out on some gear? Thinking of spending around 1000.
I'm a big Dean fan. Looking around for one. Not really sure if I want an ML though. The Cadillac series looks awesome to me.Last edited by matthew2474; 01-02-2018 at 08:59 AM.

Luckily amp-modeling technology has really evolved during the time that you've been away so decent gear doesn't have to be very expensive.
First question in terms of amp, how loud do you want/need?
I haven't heard much from Dean, if you're into the dimebag style though I think Washburn has a bunch.

I don't need a half stack or anything lol. Just something I could take to the local pub and play if I wanted too. A 2x12 amp and pedal would suffice.
Going to be honest I was never that tech savvy. Always had a buddy of mine to help me out with this stuff. I new what sound I liked and what felt the best to me and I'd search around for it with him.
update:
Been looking into pedals and I like the idea of using ibenezs tubescreamer's but I feel like I'd need a supressor/noise gate because I hate getting all that nasty humming, buzzing and feed back chit when I'm not continuously hitting notes. Plus all it does is just boosts the amps effects so I'd have to find an amp with a really good sound I like.
So the MXR Fullbore Metal sounds pretty damn nice on youtube vids. But hearing it in a video and in person can be very different. The thing is, I'm in germany, I don't have a local shop that really sells these things. I'd have to order it online. Amp's I'm at a lost with tbh. Have no idea what I should get. I use to use a Marshall JVM410H but that's not what I'm going for and I had a 2x12 Raven 100RG before that and I hated that amp. lolLast edited by matthew2474; 01-02-2018 at 09:16 AM.

I'd focus on the guitar and amp before worrying about pedals, I think a lot of amps these days have tons of gain on tap.
What's your budget split for guitar versus amp?
The Boss Katana amp line is pretty cool and may fit for your needs.

Fender strat classic vibe with vox 4watt tube amp(the blue one)
Would be my first two purchases if i were to start over again. Small enough speaker you can get that distorted sound without shaking your walls. Plenty of tone to be had from the volume knob on your guitar.Last edited by ashin1; 01-02-2018 at 12:34 PM.

Thanks for the recommendation but I've never liked how fenders felt when I played them. I like having weight to my guitar, it helps when I do leads that require a lot of bends, if it's a light guitar I feel as if I have to push down(to keep the neck from rising) and up at the same time.
Don't mean to be picky or anything lol.
That amp looks cool but I'm open for something bigger. A 2x12 is the size I'm really digging.
Wow. Yeah I like the BOSS KATANA 100 COMBO 2 X 12 INCH GUITAR COMBO. Think I'll get that to be honest, seems to be what I'm looking for, though, I've read that it's not the best for metal stock and will have to buy a pedal if I really want the sound I want. Okay. So I've narrowed down two guitars that I think I'll like, The Washburn Parallaxe PXM100C and the ESP LTD Eclipse EC-256. hmmm. Tough.190lbs Comp lifts: 420/350/600 USAPL

Yeah I think that's a good choice for amps, unlike many other solid state amps that seem to fall apart at loud volumes, the Katana amps sounded great at band level volumes. I actually tested one out against a Friedman Runt 50, which is a 50W tube amp and is loud as f*ck, and it held its own with the drummer. It's not super heavy and sounds great at apartment volumes.
From that solid amp base you can fine tune with some pedals.
That Parallaxe looks pretty tight, although not too sure on how buzz feiten tuned guitars pair with guitars that aren't buzz feiten tuned (just in case you eventually jam with other guitar brahs). But it's seems one of the best at that price range.
I like Ibanez in terms of bang for the buck as well: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/S621QMSBF
I love that "S" body shape, it's so ergonomically pleasing play.

Im Friends with one of these types of kids. Anton Oparin. I was in GIT when i met his older brother. Anton came for a visit from Russia and basically **** on everyone in the school (shred technique wise) and he was 13. And this school is full of monster players from around the world too.
He asked me to join his band and we did a bunch of Racer X covers for some gig in west LA. Cant believe this **** was nearly 10 years ago now :,(

wow the articulation, dynamics, and clarity regardless of speed. most players, when playing past a certain speed, seem to lose dynamics and there seemed to be no loss of tone or feel.
it's one thing to play fast under the comfort of a ton of gain/distortion, it's much different playing a clean tone like that. that was a real pleasure to listen to.

most likely. his videos were kind of viral about 10 years ago amongst guitar forums and such.
I had seen his videos back in the day, then I went to Hollywood (from aus) to go to GIT a year or so after. One day I was jamming with this bass player and then he says let me show you a video of my little brother. He plays one of Antons videos i had seen already on youtube. Weird coincidence. Anton came for a visit and i got to meet him. Its hard to comprehend what you are seeing when you watch him play. He could play insanely hard stuff in his sleep. Like the intro to Colorado bulldog by Mr.Big, i could get maybe if i did 20 takes and tried really fuking hard. He could do while reading a book or somechit.
he asked me to play second guitars for some concert he was having to celebrate signing with GKG.
we did a bunch or racer x chit, Scarified:
