Been working at this Loomis song and making some progress. Worked at the arpeggios and that diminished run with a metronome and got the picking down so im playing it how it was recorded now and honestly i think this may be the best technical exercise ive had since the solo to Gargoyles Angels of Darkness by Rhapsody. Starting to get a good feel for his style since beginning this too so i think im gonna learn the whole thing. Itll take a while but itll be a good project to work on.

That was pretty beastin dude, I'm a fan of the original solo. Loomis has some of the most melodic sweeps in the biz.
I'm still impressed by the picking with the elbow alternate picking stuff, how do you maintain control when crossing over strings and not accidentally catching your pick on unintended strings?

Im not too sure man. Just a lot of practice with alternate picking and sort of fixing kinks in my picking form along the way. It took a bit to get that fast picking section down but now i can do that diminished pattern all up and down the neck picking every note no problem so im pretty happy. The bit at the end is tricky though. He does a sort of 4 note sequence thats played in the same position going up the neck and the picking pattern is extremely confusing and its like if i think about it i cant play it but if i just dont think about it i can. Its really awkward. Just finished the next 40 seconds or so since posting this too so progress is coming along well on it. Hopefully ill have it all done within the month.

    Nice work. Really nailed it.

re: picking technique I wouldn't change anything because it's obviously working well. I guess you've got to keep an eye on tendonitis in the elbow but as long as you're warming up properly and taking breaks when necessary it shouldn't be an issue. Going to extremes here but I remember hearing Marty Friedman a long time before I saw a video of him and it shocked me when I saw what was going on with his picking hand. I mean it should be complete slop but it somehow works for him.

I think i do have some mild elbow problems which are mostly from lifting but nothing that flares up when playing at least. Idk, always picked like that. I grew up in the country with no internet and im fully self taught so i do have a few bad habits here or there. My pickings always been pretty precise but i feel if i worked on my form i could possibly pick faster in time.

    Progress... Isn't it a wonderful thing? :-D

It looks like as if you are floating over the fretboard Somehow It's really weird to look at, haha.
Besides working out I love to play the guitar. I mainly play instrumental pieces. Check out my YouTube-channel if you love those beautiful, moving pieces as well; https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC46kwWZ2zsaSQmt90-JL4Yg

Going to extremes here but I remember hearing Marty Friedman a long time before I saw a video of him and it shocked me when I saw what was going on with his picking hand. I mean it should be complete slop but it somehow works for him.
Yeah I def wasn't suggesting he alter his picking technique, I'm just kinda fascinated at being able to execute with precision that way. I've always had trouble with controlling the pick when picking from the elbow BUT the thing is I can pick much faster from the elbow as well. The fact that bro can pick from the elbow with precision during string crossing gives him tons of use-able, controllable speed.

Marty Friedman, while being an incredible guitarist and melodic soloist, doesn't really seem capable of going at Loomis speeds especially with the linear, diatonic, three notes per string shred runs. I also remember reading in an interview that he got tendinitis awhile ago which is unsurprising giving his peculiar pick hand positioning.

Picking from the wrist my absolute top speed (while still picking cleanly) seems to be with sixteenth notes at 200bpm. Picking from the elbow I can go well beyond that (but at the expense of accuracy).

I hear you and it's a tricky one because making changes could set him back for a while and that's going to be frustrating but the flipside as he said is the potential for even more speed. I guess the question for me would be how fast do you want to play? Melodic lines executed cleanly like that are more than fast enough to my ear. Beyond a certain point shred can start to sound like 80s video games.

    From a Loomis interview:

What was your biggest technical hurdle?

I used to pick with my whole right arm. It took a lot of work to focus all that energy into picking with my wrist instead. To get the ultimate picking, I truly believe you should just play with your wrist.

That's a bit weird because if you watch Loomis on his fast, alternate picked runs he's often picking from the elbow.

I'm quite familiar with that guitar, it's a great player. I used it a lot while testing out Friedman amps at GC.

Not sure if folks are already woke to this amp, but I just became aware of the Stage Right 611815 due to some ridiculously stupid cheap blowout sale on Monoprice:
    https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=611815

It's $180 now...but two weeks ago it was $150. $150 for an all-tube 15watt combo amp with 12" Celestion speaker and spring reverb?!?!? For $150 it could last for one gig and it'd be worth it. So I bought one.

First session with it I was playing my Ibanez archtop hollowbody strung up with flatwounds...yer archetypal jazz guitar. tbh it was kind of disappointing. Didn't really have the "pop" that a good jazz amp (like a Fender Twin or a Polytone MiniBrute) has, and it was really prone to feedback no matter where I was standing relative to the amp.

But the second session I used my Yamaha Strat clone with Seymour Duncan Vintage Rail pickups, and HOLY PHUKIN CHIT does this amp scream!!! Super incisive stinging clarity and punch. Phenomenal dynamics. It gets crunchy pretty easily -- almost too quickly -- but lots of really usable tones for rock, pop, and funk, all in a compact package.

Did I mention it was $150?

I'm noticing something bothering me when I hit more complex chords I fret them with index and middle finger and then ring and pinky, like a 1-2 deal.

Would something like that eventually correct itself?

Or should I, IDK I'm thinking something like working on fretting those with the last 2 fingers first until I'm comfortable.

    Tip/exercise

Practice your bends plugged into a tuner. That way yoiu can visually see when you hit your bend pitch perfrect. And your ear will grow accustomed to that pitch. After enoigh practice and time you will be. A master of bends.

Country lead G playezrs do thgus cause unlike blues or rock where you can get by by coming close smnd hiding behind distortion or some other effect country lead players. Many times are emulating the sound of a pedal steal which is mechanically precise and played through a clean channel
