    Thumbs up

    I know we focus on shredding here but the Foo Fighters have a tab site up that is worth mentioning.

    Tabs on it are accurate and artist sponsored.

    Arrow Shred Masterclass: Stacking Picking Patterns

    http://www.ultimate-guitar.tv/guitar..._patterns.html

    Watch the vid, tab for vid here:

    http://38.103.144.66/files/guitar_le...g-patterns.txt

    This lesson revolves around my approach to alternate picking: patterns are practiced to develop technique, but when it comes to the actual music making - I'll do whatever I can to get rid of the pattern feel. So how about the pattern stacking? Well - in this lesson I will first show you the actual patterns to practice - we will then explore how to put them together in an unorthodox way, to get away from the pattern feel.
    Enjoy

    Anyone here heard the new alter bridge album? Tremonti has stepped up a gear again, and the playing is very good. Worth a listen.

    sweep picking 101

    Alright gang; let's try our hand at some arpeggios in this lesson.

    An arpeggio is known as broken chords and can be played by 'sweeping' over the notes with your picking hand. (one of many methods of playing it) It?s an advanced technique and takes a lot of practice to master.
    So why would we ever want to sweep pick in the first place? Well obviously it sounds impressive and is a flashy technique to add to our 'repertoire' ? however it's more than just that. It is a great technique to help you master the fretboard and have a greater appreciation for scales, shapes and modes. Without going too much into the theory ? it's a great way to connect up the notes from the low end all the way up to the higher notes and back. Also when mastered, you'll be droping jaws everywhere.

    The technique:
    As the name suggests ? it's a sweeping motion, however we need to break up the hands and focus on them individually to get started.
    What we?ll be doing is using the fretting hand to form a pseudo chord shape that we?ll ?break? apart one note at a time.
    Start by forming the following chord:
    Code:
    Fig 1              fig2
    e-5------5----------------5
    b-6--------6-----------6
    g-7-----------7-----7
    d-8--------------8
    a-----------
    E-
    Now with the right hand
    - start by preparing to strum the chord only this time we?ll drop our picking hand from string to string
    - so drop your pick from the d string to the g string (downstroke motion)
    - the moment this is done remove your pinky finger from the note so it stops short
    - repeat for the g string, with your picking hand; make a drop downstroke motion to the b string and release your ring finger from the string so the note drops short and continue down the pattern.
    Once you?ve reached the e string
    - position your hand in an upstroke manner. This time as you upstroke the e string all your other fingers should be off the fretboard so bring your middle finger down on the b string on the 6th fret position and strike that note with another up stroke. Your hand should be curved as if you?re raking up the notes on each string. Next bring down your ring finger on the g string over the 7th fret. Then use the same upstroke motion to hit that note. Finally bring your pinky down on the 8th fret of the d string and finish the arpeggio with a final upstroke. You should notice that its like strumming a chord only string by string and we?re deadening the sound as we go from note to note. Now that we know how its played you can look at fig2. Above where we have the same shape but broken up ? this is what an arpeggio looks like in tablatures ? they have a chord shape that?s played broken up. However this doesn?t hold true for a lot of more advanced cases that will come up in future lessons.

    Now I want you guys to try out example 1:

    Code:
    Example 1:

    e--12------------------12---7--------------7-9--------------------9-------5---------------5
    b------11----------11---------8----------8-----10------------10------------6---------6
    g----------10----9---------------9-----9------------11----11-------------------7---7-
    d--------------9---------------------10------------------12-------------------------8
    a--
    E--
    Try it as slowly as possible and don?t even begin to start playing it fast ? at least not yet. Focus on your fingering and try to match the right hand pick droping motion so that the notes are in synch. Try to take extra care in making it all sound in time so the gaps between each note are equal. Now remember we don?t want the previous note to ring out over the next note. If it helps ? use your picking hand to deaden the last played notes by moving your palm over the last string. This will take some trial and error to get down but still focus on this if you want to play arps in the future with distortion.
    Try out the next couple of examples before we hit the next lessons.

    Code:
    things to edit: add chord names,

    For next weeks lesson:
    -Gear the lesson around a scale say A harmonic minor
    - talk about different shapes of arpeggios that can be played (stick to chordal shapes)
    - add an easier lesson before the acslatering lesson
    - talk about barre shapes and rolling joints of one finger to mask other notes
       - black star barre arpeggion
       - children of bodom lesson bed of razors interlude prior to solo
       - far beyond the sun arps in the intro
    - add fingering positons to each example

    e-13-10--------------10------12-8--------------8-----10-7----------7--s/-5---12----17--
    b----------12------12----------------10-----10---------------9-----9---------------------------
    g---------------13--------------------------9-----------------------9------------------------------
    d-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    a-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    E-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    - acslatering

    -hangar 18 marty friedman lick
    e--17--13------------------------13---17-13----13--17-13-------13
    b------------15---------------15-------------15----------------15-------
    g----------------14-----14--
    d--------------------15----
    a--
    E--

    fingering positions......................1---4--1---4---2---1---4---2
    e----18-13------------------------13-18-15-12-13-12
    b------------15---------------15-----------------------------15--14

    Great post!

    God, I hate to be 'that' guy, but in the interest of accuracy, arpeggios and sweeping are not synonymous, there's a lot of ways to play arpeggios besides sweeps; all on one string with hammer ons and pull offs for example, or 3, 4 and 5 note patterns played on adjacent strings.

    this is great for arpeggio picking control, being able to make it straight and even notes (8th or 16th) without having a gap between the sequences of 4

    Code:
    E||--------8-5-------------6-9-------|--------10-7----------------8-11--------||
    B||------7-----6---------7-----8-----|------9------8------------9------10-----||
    G||----6---------7-----8---------7---|----8----------9-------10-----------9---||
    D||--5-------------8-9-------------6-|--7--------------10-11----------------8-||
    A||----------------------------------|----------------------------------------||
    E||----------------------------------|----------------------------------------||

    I agree. I find the last album is better to listen to, the songwriting is much better. Where i am now still trying to get into the songs, and i've listened to it a fair bit.

    I would say get the Guitar Pro tab version for this tune and work through it section by section; slowly until each part is perfect. The technique is quite advanced but with practice can certainly be pulled off.

    UG has a version of the tab but I'm not sure how accurate it is.

    EDIT this version seems accurate:

    Lightbulb New Approach

    I am going to go through a few of my favorite licks and we'll see if we can get a new collection of ideas flowing.

    Here's a really simple yet sweet sound arpeggio followed with some trills. You can find this lick in Quiet Roit - Battle Axe. It pretty fun to warm up with as well.

    Enjoy

    Hey guys

    I just got 3 questions concerning Guitar Pro 5...what does it mean when they say Let Ring - - - - - - -?
    How do you play harmonics?
    And what does 8\5 means? If that means slide what does the little arch mean? Or vice versa...

    THanks!!

    how come there's so many chord shapes that can all have the same name.

    Like E7 done with 2 fingers

    But E7 is also done with 4 fingers as well

    I know there's alot more variations as well for E7, so if someone asks you to play an E7 then which one would you play.

    Generally speaking, I play certain chords shapes for two reasons. Fretboard positioning and does it have a better sonic quailty (i.e does it sound richer or fit with the progression better).

    In your example it makes sense to use that E7 as it fits better with the G when its flatpicked.

    Hope this makes sense; perhaps someone else has a more traditional music insight.

    I don't have the Little Wing Power tab however the tab listed here is accurate and sounds exactly like the real thing.

    http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showpo...&postcount=291

    I will post up the power tabs for future lessons or include a link to the actual tab. Battle is a super easy yet fun solo to play... Dime used to include this. Eruption and parts of Rhoads live Tribute solo in his live solos. Sick bag of tricks to be certain.

    THanks!!

    Let it ring:
    To let ring means to pick the note and let it the sound of the note continue. So if you picked out an Emin chord for instance and let the note ring you would:

    Pick 0 on the E string and let it resonate while moving to the 2 on the A string and 2 on the D string etc. very simple technique.

    Harmonics:
    http://www.guitarforbeginners.com/harmonics.html

    Good explanation here, ^^^

    And what does 8\5 means:

    That's a slide so in the example you gave it's a slide from the 8th fret to the 5th fret.

    Hope it helps.

    Not really sure unless its put in context. It's a 3/4 time signature but I rely on playing along with the song to determine timing and whatnot.
