    Guitar Megathread - learn-share-talk-lessons-tips-fun

    I am no self professed shred god or anything of the like - but i found a number of members here were looking for guitar lessons and thought i'd compile a set of lessons that really helped me get going in the world of guitar playing. If you have any lessons or tips, advice of anysort - feel free to contribute - i'm looking at a sticky worthy thread here in the music section.


    In the early stages i have to stress that your guitar playing should be broken down into practicing exercises and songs.


    firstly with these exercises try to use all your fingers on your fretting hand -
    for the chromatic pattern
    1 2 3 4

    assign everything in the first fret to your - Index finger
    assign everything in the second fret to your - Middle finger
    assign everything in the third fret to your - Ring finger
    assign everything in the fourth fret to your - Little/pinky finger

    1) practicing exercises are vital - try to set aside time every day to try chromatic scales such as
    (Hopefully you can read tabs)

    key is to it slowly till you can build speed and fluency - having weak fingers is always a problem and will be sorted out with more practice

    repeat backwards
    with both these chromatic scales increase by a fret and repeat. So for the first exercise start at fret 1 - play the run up and down - then repeat that same pattern from fret 2 - etc untill you can comfortably hit the 8-12 bracket of notes.

    Make sure your form is good - your fingers should round themselves over the neck for good reach and the thumb is usually right behind the neck and stays accross from the palm - make sure it never peaks out from the top unless ure playing chords

    next practice your basic chord shapes and work on buiding speed in chord changes - remember you want to be able to change chord positions as a whole and not finger by finger ( its fine when ure first learning the chord)

    Its fuking bull**** that tabs have become illegal! I also recommend www.911tabs.com they're basically the google of tabs, that compile tabs from different sites including UG. Also the UG forum is a good place for help.

    Also Guitar-Pro is a great program, everyone should get it.

    If you're serious about playing music then you should eventually graduate from tab to standard notation. Also work on learning songs by ear.

    Another little tip:

    Learn Some Scales!

    A few id recommend:

    Pentatonic
    Blues
    Phrygian
    Mixolydian
    Aeolian

    There are many uses/needs for scales, for one, they help a lot in song writing, they will also assist you in learning songs. I think they are also a fantastic exercise tool, going over scales will improve your playing a lot. Once you have mastered the scales you can create your own licks/exercises to practice with. Then there are several options on what you can do with your lick/exercise, you can play all the notes with picking, you can play it legato style, you can even double every note for an extra chalenge for the picking hand. Using wierd time signatures is also great, making your lick/exercise 7/11/13/17 notes long can also add an extra challenge. There's so much variety available ..

    One thing i like to do is, create licks/exercises specifically to help my weak points, for example:

    I have trouble at high speeds with parts similar to that highlighted in red, therefore id make licks excentuating that technique to help me improve at that technique.

    Appologies guys - these exercises take up alot of space - but are very good BEGGINER exercises



    practicing doing the last exercise jus with your ring and pinky and go up and down just with those two fingers

    No dude ask here - its whats the thread's here for

    when a note has a ~ or a \/\/\/\/\/\/\ sign after it usually means vibrato

    what you're essentially doing is while holdng that note you either move your finger left to right by adding a slight vibration to the string or move it up and down so that you get a slight change in pitch as you hold the note. Listen to the tabs on the sites - www.worldguitar.com and hear what its supposed to sound like

    I'll post a proper tutorial soon and move onto more advanced steve vai circular vibrato soon.

    for now learn the notes and hear what it sounds like - vibrato is just a vibration of the string added by moving your wrist back and forth - sorta like u trying to shake the string.


    the parenthesis - is used around a ghost note - a note you don't strike usually you'll slide down or up to that note but not hit the note - you could pull off or hammer onto a note that you don't directly strike with your pick - its an effect for timing purposes.
