    Lunch at work--Rant

I am a teacher, and I work with some "bigger" people who tend to eat these giant, and very unhealthy lunches. I never judge them though, because it's not my business.

However, I typically eat some sort of raw veggies, and protein (chicken breast, turkey...ya know) and I get these ridiculous comments about "depriving" myself, and my "rabbit food" I just can't stand the fact that they will comment negatively on my healthy lifestyle, yet I never say a word about their artery clogging fat food!
They like to comment on my "dieting" as well....even though I've eaten like this forever! I'm sensing jealousy maybe? Another girl at the table is also thin, and eats very healthy. They give her the same crap. And, they actually get attitudes when we dont stuff ourselves with the sweet treats they bring to share!
and i f I bring a protein shake into the mix, all hell breaks loose! "Whats that?!? are you trying to get "big"?! Eww! Eat something!" it's VERY annoying!

should I give it back to them, explain my reasoning, or just deal with it? P.S. these are VERY close co-workers, who I would consider friends...

Ya just give like it back to them, tell them " If I eat like you I'll get fat like you!" Of coarse for some reason you will be considered rude for pointing out their fatness but they are not rude for making comments on you being to thin....double standard but oh well.

This is just something you have to deal with. If you want to maintain a healthy working relationship with them, just learn to brush off and ignore the comments. You can even say you're diabetic or something as an easy out for not eating crap.

aahhh, ignorance. i LOATHE this crap. why do people think its ok to make negative comments about what we eat (or dont eat), but if we made comments about their sh*t food, we'd be considered VERY rude. so annyoing. it happens to me a lot too, im still trying to come up with a diplomatic way to say, "how come youre eating that big mac? eeewww, thats gonna make your ass fatter than it already is, you know!!"

and yes, sometimes its jealousy. sad. ill never understand why people are jealous of something that they can have too.

I get this everyday as well. I work in a restaurant, and every night before shift they serve a "family meal" that the chef has prepared for the staff. It is always full of oil, fatty beef or fried. I bring a piece of chicken and a salad everyday to eat, and have to endure the comments about being the "chicken lady" while I eat. It is super annoying that they comment on my food, then on how much weight I have lost and then on themselves. When they ask me why I eat chicken everyday, and someone ALWAYS does, I look them dead in the eye and tell them I don't like to be fat, I've been there, and am over it, and if that means eating grilled chicken instead of chicken fried steak, then so be it.

You don't have to be rude, but I would say something along the lines that you care about your health, and that you have to watch what you eat to maintain a healthy weight and feel good.

You'll always get comments. I keep hearing "you're skinny you don't need to diet" no I'm out of shape and I need to eat healthy. Has little to do with skinny or fat.

A lot of people just don't understand the want to be fit. In their eyes its skinny or fat. Fat is easier....

agreed...give it back to them! If you don't like what they're saying, you should definitely say something. I think a "nice" way to put it might be along the lines of:

"If you keep commenting on how I look/eat,
then I'm going to start commenting on how YOU look/eat!"

maybe then they'll back off, but even if they don't, at least you warned them! ;-)

I get comments like that from my mom. I explain to her. Everyone else I just let the comments slide. With close friends like that I would try to explain to them. Or if they have a sense of humor give them a mini jab about their food.

I've had the rabbit food comments before.

People just see a bit of leafy greens and they automatically call it rabbit food.

I was the head of the PT dept at a gym and and the front desk girl made a comment once. I had about 3/4lbs of meatballs in a big bed of spinach and kale and she says, "Oh my god, does that rabbit food even fill you up?"

I said, "How many rabbits do you know that eat almost a pound of cow flesh in one sitting? Besides, there's more meat here than you'll probably have in 2 days. It's just mixed in together w/lots of plants. You know, plants.... that stuff that's got fiber and nutrients?"

She then Bert Stared me for like 3 seconds before she let out an awkward snicker.

    I like this one. ^^^^

And although it's correct that what someone else eats is nobody's business, I think I do understand why people might have questions about protein shakes. I, too, might think it's strange if someone was only drinking when it's mealtime and everyone else is eating. I rarely have shakes, and on the very rare occasion I do, it's gulped down on the go because there's simply no time to eat. If I'm sitting down with friends or co-workers for lunch, I'm eating solid food.

You could always use a medical excuse (diabetic, gallbladder issues, etc) or you could just tell them you enjoy eating what you do.

I've seen this happens MUCH more with women, than with men. Women get jealous and would much rather bring you down. The really fun ones are the ones that are mildly overweight and attack the girl that is overweight, and then when she actually does something about it and starts slimming down, they attack her for "getting too skinny" or "eating rabbit food."

Just remember that the people being negative are negative. Be a happy person and don't let it get to you.

And the movie was who framed roger rabbit.

I use a variation of this. I just tell them that my tapeworm is a picky eater.

I follow a paleolithic diet which means no grains, starches, dairy and definitely no sugar so I I usually tell people I'm a diabetic (sugar) with celiac disease (grains) who's lactose intolerant (dairy) lol.

Its so much easier than explaining the rational behind my diet.

No don't start giving it back to them the rude way that they are giving it to you. You are better than that. There's a difference between being assertive and being aggressive, yes you should stand up for yourself, but you already know that you're happier with your body than they are with theirs so no need to rub their face in it. Them living with themselves everyday is punishment enough. But you could do some of the things that have been suggested here that let them know that, yes you are eating different but it's none of their business. I always prefer the straight forward "I don't have to explain myself to you, and I don't appreciate your comments about my lifestyle." I don't know if that's realistic where you work, but that's what I would personally do.

As a formerly fat girl myself, currently in recovery, I guarantee that they are talking to you like that because they are so jealous that you look good and have the drive to live a healthy lifestyle, the only way they can live with themselves is to make you feel like crap. Misery loves company.

Ahhh yes, been there done that. This sounds like a rant I did a few days ago. It helps that a few coworkers have recently started eating healthier and have asked me for a few tips but I still get the snide remarks or when I choose to not join them on "Fastfood Friday".

Well you can try and fight with coworkers, or you can realize that it will never get you anywhere and that it's in your best interests to try and get along in the work place.

I used to get this when I was in the IT industry working with mostly obese people.

The correct response is "mind your own ****ing business, or if you prefer I can start making comments on everything you eat and how you look? how do you feel about that idea?"

You don't owe good manners to people who have none and deliberately try to make you feel uncomfortable. Set 'em straight.

Thanks!! I have another funny one! i bought 3 boxes of girl scout cookies from a student...just because I like to support them. so, at lunch I offered a box to anyone who wanted one...Guess who took them?!?!!! Ha ha! Yup! The one who makes the most comments! And she said something about this one too... "What?! These cookies aren't on your "diet"??" I said, They're not what I prefer to eat. I like healthy food.... and left it at that. She still took the cookes with a big "ol smile! haha!

I shoulda just done this all in one post, but, yes, we have fast food days too, and I get remarks when I either A. order grilled chicken, or B. day 'no thanks'. What ev...I'm happy with myself, and truly enjoy the foods that I eat, and never feel deprived.

@ Sean, Lying about having a disease is screwed up and not funny. Responding with an answer like "This is just how I eat" is not arguing, it's answering a question truthfully.

"Why aren't you having one of the donuts I brought in? You can't splurge once in a while?"
"I'm sorry I'm diabetic" instead of "I don't eat donuts, thanks for asking though"

    BAHAHHA how pathetic...

I find that using 'Because I like it.' works well when people comment on actions I do that seem out of the ordinary. I don't get it about food since I don't have to eat with my coworkers but get a lot of comments about walking and taking the bus rather than owning a car. They feel sorry for you - but when you tell them that you actually like it that way they tend to back off.
