    Arrow Mosin Nagant 91/30

Does anyone have any experience with the Mosin Nagant 91/30 rifle? I'm thinking of getting one after reading up on them, and the fact that they are plentiful and affordable (as in you can get one for about 100 dollars).

The caliber for this weapon is the 7.62x54R which is ballistically the same as the .30-06, if you can believe that. I'd use this rifle for a plinker and/or scout rifle and later on down the line maybe as a deer rifle. Any comments??

    Pros:
    Fun to shoot
    cheap (if you use surplus)
    big gun
bayonet that makes the gun almost 6' long.
    popular, so a decent aftermarket
    can be quite accurate

    Cons:
    cosmoline sucks
lots of cleaning if you shoot surplus
    popular, so everyone's got one.
too damn big for most gun cases, you need a 52" one.
    can be quit inaccurate.

Personally, I think it's a must have for the collector. It's cheap enough, and has enough ass behind it to say no. While I haven't see the ballistics side by side, I believe that the 7.62x54R is closer to the .308 win (~7.62x51 NATO) then the .30-06. I mean the .30-06 is about a full centimeter longer then the 7.62x54r.

I have a little experience. I have one. Also an M44.

Can't be beat for the price.

I've had 4 in total. They are decent enough guns, and surplus is cheap.

I managed to sell the few thousand rounds of surplus i had for 1.5x what I paid when there was a bit of a shortage up here, and eventually got rid of all the guns as well.

To clean after using corrosive, just pour a cup of hot water down the bore, and then clean normally.

or shoot a bit of windex down there

get one, shoot it. but if you plan on goin a bit more serious, youre going to have to adjust the sights properly since they are all sighted in with the bayonet attached. and its a fair move across of the front sight...
    eg

also dont use fmj on animals, they dont like it. what ive done is get the exmil corrosive ****, knock out the projectile and powder and replace with a soft point and new stuff. iirc i had 43gr of win748 behind a .312 150gr Hornady accutip. its still corrosive because of the primer but its way better than the exmill crap.

I plan on putting a scope on it and going from there, wish me luck...

Not really sure about using it for hunting although it might be good for that, thanks for the FMJ tip - I'll probably use the newer HP type ammo for that.

The only problem being is that most of the exmil uses cases that can't be reloaded because usually they are steel and not brass, unless you know something that I don't. And the biggest one of all is, I don't reload nor do I know of anyone who does.

I'm about 90% in favor of getting one, and I got a lot of options to consider floating around in my head as to what to do with it.

I've nearly bought one about 10 times before the woman pulls me away. Lol they are just so damn cheap... A friend of mine has one; it gets shot a lot because ammo is so cheap. It wouldnt be a "working" rifle for me as I have several others to fill that role, but as a plinker its a blast.

you can get scout scope mount kits, you just knock out the rear sight and attach a weaver style base to that. ive got one here its just finding a long eye relief scope to waste money on.

they are quite capable hunting rifles. ive used mine a couple of times on medium sized game.

The cases may be steel but it hasnt stopped me swapping over projectiles and powder. i got one of those Lee Loaders for real cheap. i just take the fmj exmil round and knock out the projectile and dump the powder. i dont need to size the case or anything, its just a simple swap over. only problem is the ammo is still corrosive. since youre in the states you should just buy a box or two of the new off the shelf stuff, you can even get 180gr SP stuff. should be cheap enough. over here the only stuff i found local was Norma and at $85 for a box of 20 i almost told him to GTFO haha

I just recently bought a 91/30 and I've had it out to the range once since then. It's really fun to shoot, and the surplus ammo is cheap. If you're shooting surplus, just get into the habit of cleaning it once you get it home. These rifles are really easy to take apart and clean. I'm able to get mine apart, clean it, and reassemble in about 40 minutes.

I have one. It's a really fun gun to shoot if you don't mind the recoil. It spits a 2 foot fireball after dark (the M44 even bigger) The rifle itself is super cheap but the ammo isn't due to our government buying all the 7.62X54R ammo to train foreign armies with the Dragunov. Corrosive ammo and cleaning with ammonia both suck hardcore

They make some nice aftermarket stocks for these as well. I've seen a monte carlo stock for it in the cheaper than dirt catalog. They also make some decent scope mounts if that's the way you want to go. IMO you can't beat 'em for the price. Good luck whatever you choose.

I've got the ATI monte carlo stock on mine. I like it a lot. I just didn't have the time/motivation to get all the cosmoline out of my stock.

It's a nice and cheap stock.

Great rifle to get used to a decent level of recoil. Cheap to shoot. Can't go wrong with it.
Don't complain about the results you didn't get from the work you didn't do.

Corrosive ammo and cleaning with ammonia both suck hardcore
ammonia? bit keen. like ive said, squirt some windex down the barrel and onto the boltface and pin. then clean as normal.

if im real fukn lazy its windex and then some wd40 and a boresnake...

    wat

880 rounds for 160 dollars to your door isn't that expensive. It's twice that for .223, and the 7.62x54r is just a little bit bigger.
