Getting too much vitamin D can be dangerous and has been associated with kidney stones as well as damage to the kidneys and the heart. An average person would need no more than 600 IUs of vitamin D per day.

If you really have concerns I'd have your Vitamin D2 and D3 levels checked by your doctor to accurately asses your dosing. Personally, I'm taking about 2500iu per day but am a bigger guy and very pale in the winter.

By about 20%, but the average group in the study I'm referring to was 31 years old (Pilz 2010). I'm not sure of how much of a benefit this would be to someone in your age group (18) but if you're not getting a lot of sun, the effect could be greater.

Most, but not all doctor's, don't receive adequate training on nutrition and supplements. If you get a chance you should watch the movie Food Matters. It discusses this in great detail. Here's a review I did of it.

I take 1,000 I.U's a day that is in my Orange Triad and I add another 3,000 I.U.'s with breakfast and 3,000 I.U.'s with dinner for a total of 7,000 I.U.'s a day from supplements alone.

My Sister who is considerably smaller than I, with a body weight of about 120lb's takes 6,000 I.U.'s a day. She's had her Vit D blood levels checked and although she wasn't low on D, she said she'd like to get the levels up some more.

Toxicity usually occurs when concentrations exceed 150ng/mL. Toxicity is rare and i've only encountered one patient who was toxic but he was taking 50,000IU/day for several months. Usually I recommend monitoring for anything over 5,000IU/day. Also, its better if you can find D3 instead of D2, but D2 is still effective.

I test and keep my D3 levels between 60 to 70ng/ml year round. The home testing kits found on line work for me.

As for the amount to take, every one is different in their need. This article by Dr Davis could be of help. It is surprising the wide variance some can have with the amount of D3 needed.

    This, this and this.

All great posts; I take about 12,000 IU per day. I will be getting a blood test done in a few months time to see where I am at.

Preferably I would like my levels to be atleast 70 ng/ml closer to 100 however.

The amount of vitamin D needed for one person to raise their levels from say 30 to 40 may be 2,000 IUs a day whereas another person may have to take 10,000 IUs a day to go from 30 to 40.

This is why it is so important to monitor your vitamin d levels through testing.
